If Valve can't even succeed in normalizing the PC and standardizing it at least a little bit, then it really is a pseudo-platform.

You're presuming they were trying to achieve this from the first game. It's not clear that they were.

I think the Xbox One failed harder because it had much more powerful hardware and therefore should have performed better, if i am to believe that hardware specs matter after all.

Then it sort of goes along with what I was saying - it's success is always just around the corner...
