@Telekill: This year will probably only have Zelda, Mario and Mario Kart as Switch games that are genuine AAA. And a lot of the other games are available on the WiiU anyway lol

Do not buy into this people.

Ok, great thread!

Like some have already said on here, this really does depends a lot on the game, the type of game it is and the point to that game. Somebody mentioned HL2:Ep 2 and he was spot on. The enemy encounters in that game took the best of HL2 and combined with a mix and match kind of design. I won't repeat all of that. It does not get much better than the HL2 series in terms of fps enemy encounters (Bioshock 2 and the DOOM series are up there too).

I think where encounters really become much more complicated are in RPGs. For a long time, JRPGs had random encounters which I always, ALWAYS hated. You're walking along, bang, there's an enemy. You can't avoid it and then get teleported to a battle screen. Even in the 90s that felt dated and stale. I think FFXII was such a great game because it did away with random encounters and put you into battles in the actual environment. Western RPGs I feel have always been very good at this, which brings me to:

Fallout 3 and Mass Effect 2. Both these behemoths of the genre have most of their major encounters intertwined with their story, so every major battle, shootout and stand off is narratively relevant and what happens during it can shape the game itself. The Witcher 3 is very similar in that regard but sadly fails because the controls often lag and that leads to a delay between what the players want and what is actually happening on screen.

I will mention FEAR as an example of the most repetitive enemy encounter. Its a terrific game, atmosphere wise and creep out factor wise but as a shooter, it is just so obvious: enter environment, basically an in game arena, shoot out all the enemies, move onto next section. Nope.

@Heil68: I just really enjoy the tone of the game but the structure was repetitive so I put it away for a while. Will get back to it...at some point lol

Another failure from Nintendo? Who would've guessed.

So these better reviews don't count?

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2017-nintendo-switch-review

Do you think they count? Neither of them has stated this is a must buy. Gamespot state you should only buy it if you like nintendo's library of games and eurogamer have stated its a solid foundation but we wont quite know how good the console is for a while yet.

IGN mentions all thesep oints but also gives us a score. 6.7 is slightly above mediocre, which is what the otehrs are essentially saying. Honestly, Nintendo should have taken this subpar exmaple of a console and given it a £200 price tage and it would be comfortably everyones favourite second console.

I buy a second console pretty much every gen, last time it was the 360 and this time, I was really hoping it would be the switch (I had the GC in the PS2 generation) but it just ca't be. I think it costs £280 but I would almost instantly have to buy a memory card and a better controller, so thats probaly another £150 and on top of all that, Switch games are going to cost £15 more than the latest PS4 release.

This is a mish mash of ideas by a company with no idea how to appeal to audiences outside of Japan in a market place that has changed a lot since the mid 90s.

I just want to end with: controller sync problems in 2017? gtfoh lol

Oh come on now. "its a solid foundation but we wont quite know how good the console is for a while yet."

Is every console launch ever.

https://www.forbes.com/forbes/welcome/?toURL=https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidthier/2017/02/27/the-switch-is-much-stronger-than-the-ps4-or-xbox-one-were-at-launch/&refURL=https://l.facebook.com/&referrer=https://l.facebook.com/

It's really not. The PS4 in particular got very good reviews and where there were scores, it got way higher than a paltry 6.7.

But how good a console may be is not the only issue, itst he fact that the switch is underpowered severely, will likely not get any major aaa exclusives, its own exclusives will be few and far between (you can already by most of the launch line up on the wii u lol) andi t suffers from problems even the last gen never suffered from e.g. controlling syn problems lol Like this is 2017 dammit.

But whatever, if Forbes says Switch will kill it, I'm sure it will be the highest selling console of the gen.

Hard to argue with PS4 jamming the stable with the already barn bursting amount of AAAE games this year.

My poor wallet is already suffering. ? I can't hold all these games.

Might have to take a 2nd mortgage out on the house to afford them all and its only February!!!

SONY, by gamers FOR games gen leading PS4.

So basically, I havent finished Mad Max yet and have done like 2% of The Witcher 3 now in 2017 I just have to get Horizon and god of War, maybe the The Last Guardian and possibly Nioh (will try it when price drops). All the while, still looking to play Resi 7 and the latest GT if it releases this yera and ocuntless other 3rd party titles.

I made a post over a year ago about how stagnant this gen was and now this happens lol

Dark Souls is not a JRPG.

First off the term is very specific and refers to a very specific type of rpg games, FF, Dragon Quest etc
