Actually, older games, arcade and console alike, were far more formulaic than what we currently enjoy.
That isn't subjectivism but stark and undeniable reality; an inevitable and logical conclusion we arrive to when conducting a survey of each generation's respective software.
Contemporary games offer a much larger spectrum of variety, along with varied genres and subgenres. Digital distribution and indie games have also facilitated diversity, thus the conclusion that games are currently entrenched in formulaic design is a nonsensical if not downright ignorant postulation.
These types of threads are always based on the most tenuous of evidence, usually anecdotal blather from somebody who clearly hasn't put much thought into their hypothesis.
