one of the few games in recent memory that feels like an auteur style is incorporated is hotline miami 2. in spite of the no-nonsense, direct gameplay, the tone, music and visual style all looks like it's a direct vision of the creators

and they didnt; people hated that game. In short, there is auteurship in video games but you have to do it in a way that doesnt alienate gamers and gameplay in favor of an abstract expression. that's why 'walking simulators' are so polarizing in the mainstream audience. reviewers usually love them because they understand story-telling mediums (most likely through some form of a lit/writing degree) and they applaud and review mostly on the story, but the wide audience of gamers with different backgrounds who try it out think they're stupid -- there's no substantial gameplay,
anyways, most the 'auteurs' are in the indie scene, for better or for worse. you have game directors like kojima with that kind of vision but the auteurs in the AAA scene are very far in between
