I went to see Dragonball Evolution tonight. It actualy surprised me since it wasn't really all that bad. The film attempts to capture the essence of the Dragonball story, which is bassically the story of Goku coming of age. The start is nicely paced, wih a little too much gloss, but ti's point is well recieved.
The writing in this film is its most crippling factor. Apparently there were some budget and time issues surrounding this film, and it is cleary evident. The film is very fast paced, jumping all over the place, never taking the time to flesh the characters, or the overall story out. The main focus of the film (that Piccolo want's to use the Dragonball's to destory the Earth) is explained time and time again, like the writer didn't have enough faith that he got the point across. It just would had been nice if they spent more time on Bulma, Yamcha, Roshi, and especially Piccolo (afterall he is one of the KEY elements of both Dragonball and Z)
Given the time constraints this film suffers from, the plot is rushed. There is no sense of time passing, even though apparently two weeks pass by within half an hour. Everyone expect Goku and maybe Roshi are one dimensional and more or less there because they have to be. Another thing is, the writer tried to cover to much, think 'Saga of Goku' jammed with everything but the Red Ribbon Army and Piccolo Jr.
As a stand alone film, this is horrible. In terms of story telling, pacing, design, it fails flat on it's face. The acting is more or less okay, and for my money, Chatwin and Masters are the only one who really actually tried in their roles.
But as a Dragonball film, it does more or less okay. There are some vital elements dropped, and some lame ones put in, but as I said, more or less, this film is a good adapatation of the original magna
