I agree with Carmack on both accounts. The XBOX One hysteria was unjustified, and the two consoles are too similar to be arguing about which is better.
@gamestopper0 You're so busy cursing me and telling me to read the article that you're not reading my comments. I completely understand that the OS isn't using the memory. Why you keep highlighting a point that I'm not making is beyond me.
So we don't need to continue this discussion. It's really not that important to me what the memory is used for.
@gamestopper0 They didn't say it was 100% for the games. They said that 100% of it could be used by the games. Just because the OS isn't using that memory doesn't mean that some other process won't.
Honestly, it may not matter much, but if there wasn't some difference between this one GB of memory and the other 4.5 GB of memory, I doubt they would have bothered to make the distinction between the two. They could've just said 5.5 GB of memory available to games, but they didn't do that.
@Black_Hand_313 Look, this guy can criticize whomever he wants. And you're right, people tend to produce better products when they're passionate about their creations.
But let's not pretend that Biehn was altruistically giving constructive criticism to his former colleagues. He was basically dumping on them in the press after the project was done. His criticisms may have been perfectly valid, but he didn't offer them to the dev team where they might have made a difference. He went to the press like a spoiled athlete. If I were in the industry, it would make me question whether I'd want to work with him on any future projects.
One of the key tips you get in an interview is not to spend time dumping on your former employers. It's bad form. Just because Biehn is a celebrity doesn't mean he gets a pass on that rule of thumb.
@Glasscut32 Thanks for the clarification. That's fine with me. I look forward to being able to take my PS4 gameplay from room to room using a Vita. Then I won't have to wait for family members to relinquish the TV so I can play! :-)
@Warful This superficial list makes no mention at all of the memory map. It surprises me that so many people "liked" it since it's not relevant to this conversation.
@gamestopper0 Just because a game can use all the memory doesn't mean that the game is using that memory exclusively. If another process is using the same memory, then it will have to be swapped in/out when the game requests it. That's not what you want in a high-speed appliation like a game.
