Why change what isn't broken? If something works well then there is no need to alter something in a big way. Innovation just for innovation sake isn't the answer. The N64 wasn't that innovative. There were controllers with analog sticks dating back to the 80's. The Wii motion controller obviously wasn't as innovative as you think since motion controls haven't become the standard in gaming. The Wii U pad is just a bulky controller with a screen that is basically unnecessary for most games. The Gamecube controller was the only decent pad in that picture.
Also, notice how all generations of Playstation has a different iconic character. Nintendo just has Mario.

Did you notice how GC and Wii were on a SD TV while the PS3 already on a HD TV, lol.
