Your friend sounds biased at best, and stupid at worst. Company loyalty is silly, and has no place in PC hardware. It's all about your budget and the exact model you're looking at, and given your budget and the cards you're looking at, ATI is the way to go. ATI offers superior performance in most instances, especially when AA is enabled and DirectX 10 comes into play.

There's proof - sure, the ATI cards run rather hot, but you can easily tweak the fans to run faster and keep the cards much cooler.

well i cant afford a 4870 i just checked.... so how long will 4850 keep me going for? more than a year?
