Both selling alot and winning awards rely on each other, so I say both are important.
If a game is winning awards, they obviously sold a lot because a lot of people must have played the game to have nominated it for an award.
But, I think winning awards is ultimately better because it shows that there is something in the game that sets it apart from other games, whether it's an awesome story or unique gameplay.
On the other hand, selling a lot doesn't necessarily mean the game is really good. For example a game could have got a lot of hype, so a lot of people bought it, but ended up being sucky.
