Best defender on the Thunder.... I would go with Durant. No_Hablo_Ingles
But honestly, I've only seen probably 16 full Thunder games this season, so it is likely that I am mistaken/wrong.No_Hablo_Ingles
[QUOTE="vguy555"]OKC isn't a good defensive teamNo_Hablo_InglesI could not disagree more. Maybe they aren't anymore because of the Westbrook injury but from a points per possession bases during the regular season they were top 3 behind only the Pacers and Memphis (tied with Spurs).Assuming this is the case, who would you say is the best defender on this defensive OKC team? (You're going to tell me Sefolosha aren't you)
[QUOTE="vguy555"]Nice attempt, but I'll ask you this. The stats are based on Ibaka's proximity to the basket. If nearly 3/4 of shots are taken at close range, how is that not partly Ibaka's fault? He is their 'paint defender' yet teams constantly attack and score in the paint? As the paper states, the best paint defenders (Howard, Hibbert, Marc Gasol, etc.) deter the opponents from even attacking the paint while they are in. Perkins/Collison are often on the floor with him at the same time, and they're usually the ones that end up near the basket. Ibaka more often than not is the one stretched out to the perimeter to guard shooters. He's last on the list on shots faced there, and it isn't a coincidence. So many problems with stats, but I'll try to point out two potential flaws.
-Basket Proximity Shots faced when defender was within 5 feet of basket, he might not have even been defending those shots.
-Ibaka often gives help and rotates to the paint during a drive.

Shots taken are bound to include shots made, but once again, just because 74% of the shots were in close range, doesn't mean 74% of the shots went in. Therefore, I bring your attention to the Close FG%, where he is ranked 4th on the list.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they're just shots taken, not shots made. The FG% on the same chart gives a better idea on how he actually defended those shots. If you would like a more statistical outlook instead of observational one http://www.sloansportsconference.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/The%20Dwight%20Effect%20A%20New%20Ensemble%20of%20Interior%20Defense%20Analytics%20for%20the%20NBA.pdf 'out of centers who have faced at least 100 total shots in the basket proximity study, Serge Ibaka ranked last; when he is within 5 feet of the basket, opponents shot 74% of their shots in the close range area.'No_Hablo_Ingles
Perkins/Collison need help in the paint, they cannot stop penetrations by themselves. OKC isn't a good defensive team, and when the Rockets start raining down shots, flaws are obviously going to be exposed. When he gets blocks, someone else has to rotate over and get the ball if it's still in bounds. Harden is a versatile player, and it doesn't help that everyone else on his team seemed to be knocking down shots yesterday, forcing rotations and the entire OKC team seemed to be scrambling on defense. Ibaka is obviously a presence in the paint, and the Rockets few big men aren't much of an offensive threat alone. When he is @ the 4, and forced to guard a stretch 4 (like Parsons or Garcia or Delfino) he is leaving them wide open one pass away in order to contest a drive when Perkins/Collison is already there. Many of his blocks, in this series at least, come against guards who he incorrectly defended in the pick and roll (allowing them to go middle when the primary defender is trying to force them baseline into help), but he is athletic enough to get back in the play in a handful of them. Problem is when he gets these kinds of blocks, it is typically his man that recovers the ball for an easy two. On the occasions that he switches onto Harden (happened 3 times yesterday), he played too far off allowing Harden to get off a clean shot from down town.No_Hablo_Ingles
He goaltends, thanks.BobblesI disagree, blame the refs if anything.
Ibaka should be banned from all conversations regarding Defensive Player of the Year or All NBA Defense recognition... No_Hablo_InglesI would love to hear your reasoning behind this. Enlighten me.
