Probably Pokémon Sun when I'm bored. It's what handhelds are built for.

@5UPERMARIO: That's Orphan right? Works the same as Champion in DkSIII. But with a little less time to regroup, and no chance to stagger. My strategy was circling/ dashing left and keeping close. It's a hard boss but Ebrietas in the Challice was my bane in BB. That freakin Beast has OHKO moves even on NG >_<

^^^

This.

That boss was a nightmare the first time you encountered it, no ifs ands or buts about it. I also noticed the steep increase in difficulty on the New Game +. Speaking of which, correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Bloodborne have a minimum of 3 playthroughs in order to get the platinum? LOL, Welcome to Hell!!!!

I personally say "no" it's certainly not my 2016 GotY. But I'm fine with GS picking it.

My time playing Overwatch was more limited than the fanbase that plays it even now, those that still play with freinds, and grind for rare loot boxes.

It's a game many play and enjoy, mostly due to Blizzards level of quality and care I assume. Has solid mechanics, art direction. You could say it doesn't need to be more for its intended audience. It's more inviting than the usual DM FPS because it's a lot like Team Fortress 2.

But that's also why it's not my personal pick. It's simple in its intention, and thus is limited in scope. And considering it wants you to replay continuously. I'd rather do that in games like Dark Souls III, D00M, or even Pokémon S/M.

I know many think poorly of D00Ms DM multiplayer, but Snapmap is amazing! Do not overlook that feature. Then add to that a superb single-player campaign.

And Souls. Well, replay-value is well known at this point.

As for Pokémon. Only reason why I see that getting dismissed, is because it being a 3DS game. S/M really is an amazing gem that has beaten all expectations. But many will judge/ dismiss it for juvenile reasoning.

However I can't speak for everyone, so did Overwatch deserve GotY? Again, for me- "no", but I don't know what the popular vote would be_

Dark souls 3... that right there is a solid game that NO ONE is talking about for some reason. It's like they forgot it even came out this year.

I had a couple regrets in Until Dawn.

Shame every time a party member dies. :(

OMG that game was another perfect example of what I was talking about. Constantly too. Who you gave what item/weapon to, who you decided to take the reigns and go check out uncertain areas, heck even just deciding whether to obtain certain objects, it all made you second guess yourself.

How many people ended up dying when you finished? Think I only had 1 (still can't figure out how I managed that lol.).

I think the OP is asking more about choice branches in the games, and having them be compelling enough that you are invested in, and can regret, the choices you made over the course of the game. The only time that's happened with me was in TW2 - the game has some pretty interesting branches and at the end I felt like I could have gone a different path and would have been more satisfied. Sadly, most games don't even have such a feature - they have one outcome regardless of what you do (which is often fine, but especially in RPGs the power of choice over the story arc shouldn't be overlooked!)

Spot on. That's more of what I meant but hearing some of the other members insights into what games "burned" them is quite amusing. I know myself that I, even though it has been rare, have been let down a few times by a newly purchased game.

I already posted this in the gamespot game of the year 2016 comments section on the main page but thought it would be applicable here too.

Not trying to cause controversy or anything (or am I?) but I’ve had this nagging feeling ever since it was released that Overwatch would be championed by the gaming community (the journalists and media.) as being the prime ambassador for Game of the Year.

All the pieces of the proverbial puzzle seem to be in place in regards to its ascension to such a prestigious role. I mean, it’s multiplatform, developed by a very powerful and influential company, and as of late seems to be checking off all the “proper” PC boxes on the ballot; the latter of which the gaming community (mostly journalists.) and media seem to eat up like it’s going out of style.

I can’t help but feel like the gaming media is putting emphasis on all these points when choosing between the different candidates. Should they? Perhaps. But still, I can’t help but feel there’s something more going on.

I still remember that cringe-worthy speech done by the guy who accepted the award on Overwatch’s behalf at the VGA’s a few weeks ago. Forgive me for paraphrasing but when he accepted the award I believe he said something along the lines of the game promoting

-“… a message of hope, of diversity, a message about a bright and hopeful future. And these are all thing we really believe everyone needs a little bit of RIGHT NOW…”-

This kind of stuck out in my mind, especially considering the political climate at the time (the presidential election had just wrapped up and people were rioting.). I don’t know, maybe I’m looking too far into it (I’m sure I am… lol, I do that.) but I just thought the way he delivered what he said was a little odd, like there was something behind it.

Either way, Overwatch seems to be the “right” choice from a “let’s try to please as many people as we can” point of view. Not sure if that means it’s truly deserving of such a title but…

What say you Gamespot community, agree? Disagree? Also, should all these reviewers (not just gamespot) give more clear criteria in regards to what makes them come to the decisions they make?

Watching games on youtube.

How many of you have done this?

I will admit, there have been a few games I’ve watched on youtube due to the fact that they were completely story focused based games and didn’t really have much in the way of gameplay. The other important factor I should mention is that they were all very hard to find games at the time. I think one of the only games I have done this with was Quantic dreams Farrenheit/indigo prophecy (obviously this was before it was remastered.).

However there is one thing I never fully understood. I have a friend who is consistently talking trash about a certain game console yet every time I mention some of its exclusives he always talks about how he watches the whole thing/walkthrough on youtube hence his desire not to invest in getting said console. Is it just me or is that strange?

I couldn’t sit there and watch some random guy on youtube play a game like, oh… let’s say Gears of War 4 or Uncharted 4 and feel I was experiencing it just as much as someone actually playing it. I can kind of understand for game like TWD or Heavy rain/Beyond 2 souls but even then you are robbing yourself of that feeling you get when you have to suddenly make a decision and it’s time based. Remember that scene in Heavy rain where you are chained down to the table in that guy’s basement and someone comes to the door? That scene wouldn’t nearly have had the impact it did if you were watching some no name play it on youtube.

As for my friend, I told him that if he is watching so many of these exclusive games he should just buy the damn console lol. He just laughed me off and said no, that system sucks (cue rolling of the eyes now.).

So the question stands. How many of you watch games on youtube, and I do mean FULL watches? When a new game comes out that you are partially interested in is your first thought that comes to mind '"ahhh, think I'll just watch the whole thing on youtube..."? Also, do you consider it odd to be doing it for multiple games?

With the release of The Walking Dead season 3 just recently it got me thinking… (like I don’t do enough of that right?).

The Telltale games are almost completely story driven games. As such their character development as well as focus on narrative are some of the best in the industry, regardless of whether one cares for the games or not (Quantic dreams is another developer brought up in this kind of a conversation.).

One thing the Telltale games (specifically TWD) have always done extremely well in my opinion is made me RREEEAAALLLYYYY regret some decision I’ve made in the past later on in the game. Remember that abandoned car of food and supplies in TWD season 1? .... Yeah, lol… Needless to say when that decision played out later on in the game I wanted to immediately stop, reload a previous save, and choose an alternative choice despite it probably not making a huge change in the story at that point.

Other examples of choices that may leave someone feeling like they did the wrong thing are deciding on who to allow to live or die. In the back of your head you are always left wondering how things might have played out differently.

Any point in any game that made you really regret your past decisions? (And yeah, HAR HAR, there are some past games that have made me regret things… like buying them lol.).
