[QUOTE="GabuEx"]There is nothing more damaging one can do against one's credibility than to present the word "theory" as evidence that evolution is not true. The word "theory" in science has absolutely nothing to do with the level of certainty there is associated with the scientific concept. A theory in science is a broad, unifying explanation of multiple observations or phenomena. A scientific concept cannot reach the level of theory until it has made falsifiable predictions, has consistently failed to be falsified, and has produced verifiable results. The scientific term for the lay understanding of the word "theory" is "hypothesis", which does refer to that which has been presented as an assertion but which has not yet been verified.

having to explain the difference between theory and hypothesis in a scientific debate is a bit discouraging, don't you think.

[QUOTE="bobaban"][QUOTE="whendidshecall"] lol why waste your time spending hours and hours reading when the movie which is going to take a shorter time tells the same story.Pirate700

[QUOTE="MetalGear_Ninty"] I agree. One thing that irks me is when people think that "evolution = natural selection", which is of course not true because the two words are not synonymous. As well as the factors you mentioned, we can't forget the role that basic bog standard genetic drift plays in evolution!

when my teacher first taught us about charles darwin she said that "darwin never used the word evolution in his publication of "on the origin of species." that term was coined afterwords. and yes that is one of the things that irks me too.

[QUOTE="PandaTrueno86"]So for the past month, I've been brewing up this concept for a new and (I would LIKE to think it would be) revolutionary social networking/video sharing site. Like really, I know what should be on it, I know what features I want, I know it could be different from any other. I just don't know how to start. I need help or suggestions, or SOMETHING.

learn how to code.

[QUOTE="MetalGear_Ninty"] Perhaps the loss of the prominence of the tail is due to a Fisherian runaway; the fact that we have a vestigial tail of some sort suggests to me that perhaps through our evolution tales have became shorter and shorter which would occur if a Fisherian runaway really did occur. I could be wrong though, this is just conjecture.

i'm one to believe that evolution isn't a straight line. it's based on sexual selection (fisherian means sexual evolution basically for those who don't know [not aimed at you metalgear, obviously]), natural selection (basically survival factors involving gathering of essential resources, surviving climate, and predator/prey), and as of late artificial selection. i would agree that the tail could be a fisherian evolution, but i think it would be fisherian as well as other factors. i don't believe one method of selection is powerful enough to etch out an entire appendage. that's my theory though. i like yours too.

This is the first time I am reading a book that is going to be made into a movie. I never read other book/movies like Harry Potter or LOTR. Will reading The Hobbit before seeing the movies when they come out make the movies not as good? What are your guys experience with doing this? Even if it does degrade the movie experience I'm still going to read the book.

[QUOTE="playmynutz"]evolution is wack. nothing but excuses to glorify human beings. as if some monkey one day said hey imma create a civilizations cus them tigers are too stupid to think of that. whats are these evolutionist scientist really seeking for? a way to disprove god by saying we dont need a god to evolve and create. the thread starter sounds way off in disproving evolution tho. there was never any "missing links." animals share a lot in common because we are all from earth. i mean the whole arguement of evolution isnt relevent to me. am i supose to feel good that i evolved from monkeys instead of a perfect god creating all life?

this might sound crazy and far out, but try and expand your mind a bit. scientists don't really care about proving or disproving a deity. they simply want to explain how and why everything is at it is. if their theories go against any religious beliefs, so be it. that was never their original intention, they have bigger things to worry about than a fabricated story intended to control/give hope to the masses.
