Not very good choices to be honest. Games like Dear Esther, The Walking Dead, Max Payne 3, even Borderlands 2 were much better written than some of the games mentioned.
Nice to see Dayz get mentioned. I still feel that the Stalker games did random emergent stuff between ai and animals better than Far Cry 3, but it was still damn cool in that game and less prone to glitches.
One think this video doesn't touch on is the atmosphere/ambience of the games. Chernerous feels like a real place and as a result the game is much more atmospheric. Warz's world is just dull and lifeless. I think this is one of the most important factors when it comes down to it.
@PsV1710 @with_teeth26 you missed my point entirely, well done. I was talking about 2d/pixelated/animated type games that are so common on the PC despite it's potential for much higher fidelity visuals. There will always be developers regardless of platform who are not interested in pushing the boundaries of visual fidelity and instead will focus on other aspects of a game.
Tom argues that new consoles with more powerful hardware will see a increasing focus on high-end visuals. I don't think this will necessarily be the case, look at the PC, the most powerful platform currently available also has the most games that use fairly basic visuals.
You also have engines like Unreal Engine 3 that look good and can be acquired and used cheaply such that even low-budget indie games can utilize them and have great graphics (look at Chivalry: Medieval Warfare for instance). It is only with the big-budget games under major publishers which use proprietary engines that risks are not taken. There are also instances of games that use technology to power innovation such as Company of Heroes with its destructible environments and physics.
