you can pick up the optional characters whenever you want to really. i got vincent very late in my game. so dont worry if you miss them the first time, you can come back and get them.
i work at fye, and we have boxes of advent children just sitting there. i was begging my boss to let me buy one but hes being a jerk. its so frustrating holding it but knowing you cant watch it.
just to warn you, many (including me) loved ffx but was dissappointed in ffx-2. i have heard good things about the story, but it just doesnt have the same feel as the first one did, mainly because of the characters and the lighter theme it has. it wouldnt be a bad idea to rent it before you buy it, just to make sure you like it.
if some type of global disaster does occur preventing square from continuing the ff series; then some other company will just slap a new name on it and sort of take over. and without square, alot of companies will see it as an opportunity to dominate the console rpg genre, which isnt a bad thing because there would be alot of ff-like games created.
