Using 'potions' and a certain amount of stat management and choices doesn't automatically allocate a game to the RPG genre. Dark Souls hardly qualifies as an 'old-school dungeon crawler' either - there are games like Shin Megami Tensei (Then again, it's an old title) or even the Darkest Dungeon (PC indie game) that fits the category a whole lot more. The gameplay aspect of Dark Souls is catered more towards the action genre owing to how the game's designed.
I've always considered it to fall somewhere along the lines of an action game with some light RPG / Metroidvania elements.
@oopiedoopie: ... Implying that RDR's prequel has the same layout / size as the first RDR.
See Tall Trees and the Great Plains being a small figment of the map? Yeah, it used to be like 1/3 of the entire friggin' map in RDR AND the game takes place in the same setting.
Meanwhile Far Cry Primal's a game that's completely unrelated to FC4 set in an entirely different location. Go figure.
