So after some more googling, it sounds like we can't plug up a hard drive like we used to be able to do and play the media on the hard drive on either console. Is that right?

In a month or so and I'm going to buy either the PS4 or the Xbox One. I can't seem to find an easy answer to some media streaming questions I had and I'm hoping you guys can help me out.
One of the things we do frequently is plug an external hard drive up to our PS3 and watch a variety of stuff on there (mainly a lot of irritating cartoons for my kid!). I've been reading that neither system supports .mp4 playback via usb? Is that still true? Has that been patched?
Any indications on which system has "promised" the ability to play .mp4 files via usb in the future? As we'll use the console as our primary media hub as well, this is an important feature to us.
Thanks for any help.
Hi,
I'm going to visiting some family in the UK and wanted to buy my nephew some PS3 games. They're all cheaper to by here in the USA, and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with how well region free games work?
Do all games pretty much work on every PS3? He has the 160gb slim UK PS3 version.
Thank you
Hello,
I recently converted to using the built in app for Netflix streaming instead of the disc. I love it except for the fact that it does not display properly on my television. The image appears to be too wide for my TV screen, and I can not figure out how to readjust the aspect ratio.
I have connected the PS3 via the component cables and am using a 1080i connection. Everything else I display appears properly. I have attached two pictures of Netflix loading up so that you can see what I am talking about. Sorry for the blurry photos...my camera is not great.
If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it. Thank you!
First Image...it appears that wide screen mode is set right.
Second Image...a small portion of the screen on both sides is cut off and is displaying outside of the TV screen parameters.
Thanks for all the help!
I just ordered a PSP online, and also wanted to order a larger memory stick so I can watch movies etc. What is the maximum size pro duo stick that the PSP will recognize?
For example, I know some devices like phones can not recognize the 8gb sd cards out there, and I would hate to buy an 8gb memory stick that the PSP will not recognize.
Thanks for all your help.
I'm about to buy a Wii for my nephews and had a few questions before I did so, and was hoping the members of this forum could help me out.
1. Can the Wii play media files such as mp4, wmv, etc like the ps3 and 360? (No big deal if it can't not a deciding factor for us)
2. Are the games region coded? My nephews live in the UK and I was going to buy the Wii there, but at times would probably want to mail them games for Christams and the like.
Thanks for your help
Sorry to be a bit more clear. If I plug in a usb flash drive also known as a thumb drive the PS3 will not recognize it. However, if I plug in a larger usb hard drive then it pops up under videos/photos/music.
What I am curious about is why does it not recognize the thumb drive? I often want to transfer a quick mp3 or something to the PS3 and am unable to do it. The same flash/thumb drive is recognizable by my computer as well as the 360.
Not sure if I'm the only one with this problem, but the PS3 will not recognize usb flash drives to transfer content for me. If I plug in a USB hard drive it shows up, and the same thing with memory sticks. Any idea why this is occuring and what I can do to fix it?
The flash drives I've tested do work on my 360 and on my computer.
