Just bought NBA Jam and NHL 94

BLBxLakers24

Excellent, excellent choices. I've been playing those two games for years, they never get old to me.

The oldest retro systems I own are a Japanese lauch Mega Drive and a Sony Hit Bit-F1XDJ MSX2+ computer system (see pic below). Both systems were manufactured in 1988.

I had a Atari 2600 (my first gaming system) but we got rid of it. I also had a Master System but we also got rid of it in favour of the Mega-Adapter.

So does that mean that your shmup teeth were weaned on early shmups like River Raid and Chopper Command? :P

My earliest system is a tie between the 2600, Odyssey 2, Coleco Telstar Colortron (pong machine), and the Microvision (first cart-based handheld)

Stinger is another one... a bit different than the others though, you shoot coat hangers, sneakers, and plumbing. It's not particularly spectacular, but it's decent.

Rygar: The Legendary Adventure was kinda similar. Here's a gameplay video so you can see what it's like. (Of course, the framerate isn't really as bad as in the video)

For me it the Guardian legend for the NES comes to mind. It was actually a great game...hybrid of Zelda and a space shooter (very weird combo indeed, the beginning of the stage you played it like a space shooter, then you explored like legend of zelda). Sadly not many remember it. :(GAMECAMILLER

Funny you should bring this game up, I just got it in a NES bundle from Craigslist. The on-foot parts are a little confusing as to where you should go at first, but it's a great game indeed.

[QUOTE="RobMetalCheese"]E.T. for the Atari 2600. You can't get more crappier than an entire system dying off because of one game.aschuhart

Oh please. If you think that's the worst game ever, you can't have played some of the other games in the 2600 library. Also, no way did the system die because of that game.

Interesting little article:

E.T. is seen as marking the beginning of Atari's downfall and is often viewed as one of the biggest commercial failures in video gaming history, as well as the worst video game ever made E.T. was a contributing factor to Atari's massive financial losses during 1983 and 1984, and a glut of unsold copies of the game helped contribute to the video game crash of 1983. As a result of overproduction, hundreds of thousands of unsold cartridges were buried in a New Mexico landfill.

ET was a small, small factor in the crash of 1983. By no means did it end up screwing Atari over. Sure, they made some stupid decisions regarding ET which ended up costing them, but I was responding to RobMetalCheese's statement that Atari died because of ET. The 2600 continued to be popular during and after the crash, and Atari continued releasing new consoles for a decade afterwards.
