One thing that is often over looked in a console game at the moment s a good editing or creation feature, sure even some of the better ones are very hard to use, but they can often add to the length of a game and increase your creativity. The first game which actually got me started on this was WWF No Mercy on the N64, a very simple to use create a wrestler mode but very robust in the sort of things that you can do with it, at one point that's all I ever did on it, which made the multiplayer games far more fun knowing few others could have the matches I could. I still go back to it today to see what I can do with it, now as far as wrestling games go it is pretty much a standard feature even though you need to put in a lot more effort to get anything out of the current one but if you have the patients and a keen eye for detail the results are often very good.
The next game is Timesplitters 2 on the GCN, as far as FPSs go this is still the only notable one on a console that has a decent creation feature, very hard to get to grips with mind you but once you get the hang of it, can lead to single play and multiplayer maps that rival those of Goldeneye on the N64. I have yet to try the Map Maker on the third Timesplitters yet but I understand it is far better than the second one, where you can make more detailed single player missions and far bigger too. It is probably the only real feature that is missing from just about any other console FPS, hopefully this becomes more of a standard in the years to come though.
One last game I would like to put in the category of great in game editors is PES4(Pro Evolution Soccer 4) on the PS2, not every ones pick at times due to a lack of a licence on some teams, however many may not know this but the team edit option is far better than many realise I have only just started using it myself as I didn't realise how good it was, but with enough care and attention you can put all the correct badges and logos on the kits within a margin of error of course, but generally with time and care you can get them looking like the real thing and as good as the ones in the game already. It can take hours of your life on a single logo, but it tends to add to the experience, also the first time a few of my friends seen it they were shocked at how good it was. At first the though I had cheated to unlock them. This is at the moment my current favourite one, but as the games go on they are starting to get more and more licences so there maybe a time when this feature gets removed because it is no longer needed.
So really I have to say the inclusion of this feature in many games is always a good way to increase the life of it, and getting people more creative and to share their work. I'm hoping more and more games start to feature these as standard in the next few years, as everything becomes more online focused as that way many more people get to see your hard work and try it for themselves.
