I am amazed how surprised some of you are at this game's failure. Look at the box art, the title, the developers, and the pre-release screens. I could smell this one weeks before it came out.

From your post it is obvious that you are biased towards the PS3. As for your friend, why does he want a laptop instead of a cheaper machine that plays Gears, Oblivion, GH2, Lost Planet, and will play Halo 3, the xbox 360?
Just pay the $400. I started gaming with an N64 and a Gameboy, and upgraded to Gamecube and GBA on their respective launches. However, in the week before the Wii's launch I went to a friends house to play Gears and decided I would rather get a 360 now, skip camping, and get a Wii once they are widely available. I am still waiting on the Wii, but the 360 is absolutely great. The only reason I included this story is to prove that even a nintendo fanboy can like MS (although deep down I am hurting for Super Paper Mario). You can't go wrong with the Xbox though, as long as you avoid the core.
In addition to those ideas I think you should be allowed to display your favorite five achievements from any game on your gamercard so everyone can see them right away. For example, your Forza achievement or the Seriously... achievement in Gears. Making sure everyone you meet online know you five-starred every GH2 song on expert or whatever would be great bragging rights. As for giving away points, rentals on King Kong and EA Sports games would go through the roof, and all future games would have achievements like "Look at options menu - 100g" "Calibrate brightness - 50g" "Create a new character - 200g" so their game would be popular for the free stuff it can net you.
