Battlefield 3 premium service launching June 4 - Report

Source says new content service to arrive during E3 next month will offer content drops with exclusive items for DICE's modern-day shooter.

Electronic Arts will release a premium service for Battlefield 3 on June 4 (the day of EA's E3 2012 media briefing), a "reliable source" has told Battlefieldo. According to the site, the service will be titled Battlefield Premium, and it will grant players a range of exclusive content.

"Battlefield Premium is coming!" rumor says.

The first piece of content to be given to Battlefield Premium members will include a knife and a black dog tag, as well as a set of soldier camo, weapon camo, and assignments. Future content was not revealed, and it was not mentioned if Battlefield Premium will incur a subscription fee.

If Battlefield Premium comes to fruition, it will follow Activision's Call of Duty: Elite, a free and paid service that gives members downloadable content and exclusives, among other things.

Additionally, EA has hinted at a Battlefield subscription service in the past. In March, EA Games executive vice president Patrick Soderlund said, "Like all other companies, we're looking at how we can maximize our investment in this, get the most out of our investment, and get more people playing this product. That may take us to different places, but we're not really talking about where that is yet."

On top of Battlefield Premium, the site is also reporting that DICE is preparing to launch a new Battlefield 3 expansion pack during March 2013. It will follow the End Game DLC, which was announced in March 2012 as the final add-on headed to the new shooter.

There are times when you just have to say No. Remember as consumer we don't HAVE to buy everything. Because if we do we end up paying for everything.

All assclowns like EA understand is money. If you reward them for bad behaviour it will not only continue, but get worse. When you stop buying their crap, that's when they sit up and pay attention. BF/COD? Same shit, different pile.

Rented servers still out of control. Where's the incentive to get this service when abusive raging teen admins kick/ban you from every game you play because you killed the admin? Will this premium service allow you to not get kicked/banned? Rip-off either way. RIP BF3, you used to be a fav.

Patrick Bach and other dice employees mentioned that COD elite was a mistake in various interviews and that they would not take BF in that direction and yet hear we are.

They also said they were going to maintain good contact with those who purchased the game, yet it took an organized boycott to even get word of the first patch.

soon after they let all official servers disappear by way of rental, in addition to still allowing rented console servers to be named with the prefix [DICE]

Shortly we will receive a COD style CQB DLC for what has been a primarily large scale and vehicular warfare based game

This list could go on and on, but I grow weary of it and anyone still reading already knows what would go on it

Fool me once shame on you, fool me 8 or more times shame on me. Between EA ruining Mass Effect and BF (2 of my favorite series) among other EA related issues. I will no longer even consider purchasing a game that says EA anywhere on the box

I'm pretty sure EA said they would never do this at a press conference at E3 a couple years ago when they were presenting BF3. Oh well... Subscriptions are sometimes a necessary evil, and depending on how much it costs, it may be worth it.

what a lot of you do not seem to understand is it costs money to develop downloadable content, game updates and so on. if they do not start up a paid subscription service for downloadable content then not only are they not making money, but also they are losing money. Personally, I think £50 subscription fee is fair and that most of you are just moaning because you hate having to pay for things, I bet half of you are torrent leechers

Do you work for EA? Fact is we all paid $60 for the game and are buying DLC is we chose to. Maybe if EA wasn't milking this game and driving away their fans, they wouldn't need a subscription fee and would be able to count on more people buying DLC. Instead, they do things that make people boycott or lose interest, and then seek to recoup losses by scamming the people who remain.

@djaaronp287 That's why the DLC isn't free. Paying $ for DLC and now for some camo and dog tags. They're making tons of money off BF3. Why else would EA still care about it?

I new this was going to happen. Call Of Duty Elite has just given IW an extra $100 Million to blow so of course EA would follow suit. I love BF3 so of course i will be signing up. 4 June cant come quick enough.

Like this comment if we all remember this from about march or april 2011

"Battlefield 3 is going too take MW3 down!!!!!!" Remember that quote everyone. Where in that sentence did we see or understand BF3 will join hands with MW3!?!?!?!?!? WTF!!!

@suffering-evil Why would I like a comment that literally makes no sense. Who quoted that? Were they meaningful? Do you even make sense. The answers to the last two questions are a stern no.

a new low for EA, havent played bf3 for allmost 3 months and i doubt i will ever again.

its sad EA competing to be the Mastergreedy because free battlefield/battlelog is a troll haven and now paying for being more trolled? sure CoD pricetag for games is bit higher but at least we dont get the Online pass shit, if you get bored of the game you can sell without any issues unlike any recent EA game ! i guess the first map pack for this new premium will be called "wallet grabbing deathmatch"

After the success of CoD Elite, its only natural EA will pursue the same thing.

When you have a very popular IP like Battlefield/CoD on your hands, many ppl will buy it no matter what you do with it.Activision and EA know that well,so I actually wouldn't be suprised if services like this are just a first step towards subscription based models in their FPS franchises.

Elite tested the market, and was well accepted, with a lot of paying subcribers. If this BF3 service gets the same level of success,we may expect FPS subsciption models very soon...

And to those who say the idea is absurd and prone to failure, keep in mind how only a few years ago we thought the same of DLC,but look at it now,it became a sad standard that introduced many problems to the consumer...

I'm no longer going to talk about how greedy EA is. Premium service is only a valid choice for a product that is constantly updated.

Not to mention If i was a player without premium, i'd quit the game thinking its idiotic i can't use the same stuff as others.

Maybe they are trying to create a community which is better compared to what COD has. Its like, " Join our club! It's for people who wanna be at a better place with better people!" . It might actually work but i pray it won't.

@DrBob27 Well i think they are making more than enough money as it is by selling the product in the first place so there is no point in asking more money to "use" a product , is there ?

So yea, there is a boundary between greedy and making money.

As long as this service isn't a big money grab like COD Elite then maybe it will become popular

It's still pretty frustrating that when Activision and the developer put something into the newest Call of Duty, many major developers have to do a similar thing in response in order to keep their own game competitive...

@robertcain its for direct competition with COD elite.

So it'll be the same. And whatever game company ends up leading this race in "premium service" will just get greedier than it's allready too fat to live opponent, and will force it to becomes as greedy untill it becomes greedier than the first winner - wich will force this now uncrowned greedy **** to become even more greedier.

Greedy sobs.

This will probably be the first column on battlefield 3 here on gamespot thats gonna get very negative feedback, if thought certain modern warfare 3 columns got alot of hate, 26 comments now at 2pm eastern time (nyc) I expect this to be over 300 comments by the end of my work day, and I predict alot of cursing at you soderland!!!! You were better off just giving the making the maps packs 10-15 a piece. Battlelog is already free, we got free maps already, so just give a normal price tag for each map pack, Subscription service, hellllooooooo I play psn, its free!!!!!! and I'll back my 360 brothers as well, you pay for xbox live, most of ya'll have COD elite, and also download games from the 360 store, they don't want another service subscription either!!!!

Well, this is just another step forward for online games like this coming with mandatory subscription fees. Okay, maybe not, but still, along with the DLC how much money are people going to drop on one game??
