Battlefield 3 premium service launching June 4 - Report

Source says new content service to arrive during E3 next month will offer content drops with exclusive items for DICE's modern-day shooter.

Electronic Arts will release a premium service for Battlefield 3 on June 4 (the day of EA's E3 2012 media briefing), a "reliable source" has told Battlefieldo. According to the site, the service will be titled Battlefield Premium, and it will grant players a range of exclusive content.

"Battlefield Premium is coming!" rumor says.

The first piece of content to be given to Battlefield Premium members will include a knife and a black dog tag, as well as a set of soldier camo, weapon camo, and assignments. Future content was not revealed, and it was not mentioned if Battlefield Premium will incur a subscription fee.

If Battlefield Premium comes to fruition, it will follow Activision's Call of Duty: Elite, a free and paid service that gives members downloadable content and exclusives, among other things.

Additionally, EA has hinted at a Battlefield subscription service in the past. In March, EA Games executive vice president Patrick Soderlund said, "Like all other companies, we're looking at how we can maximize our investment in this, get the most out of our investment, and get more people playing this product. That may take us to different places, but we're not really talking about where that is yet."

On top of Battlefield Premium, the site is also reporting that DICE is preparing to launch a new Battlefield 3 expansion pack during March 2013. It will follow the End Game DLC, which was announced in March 2012 as the final add-on headed to the new shooter.

Now its a question of how much its gonna cost, having very mixed feelings about this. I have both MW3 and BF3 and enjoy both, but this time I wasn't planning on purchasing mw3 map packs because I was so hyped into bf3 maps especially that the limited edition came with a free map pack and eventually battlefield 1943, so bf3 got some free stuff there, I just hope its at least cheaper than mw3 service but we'll wait in see with in the next month. June 12th is when close quarters comes out and its may15th now, so any day we'll get the prce for the subscription service or how much it will cost if you get the map packs seperately. Still excited about the indoor gunning in june but this map pack greed is really making second guess it. Well I guess if its news that I don't like I can stick with Starhaw which already stated to have all map packs free.

Hahahaha people have to be out of their minds. I never bought Battlefail 3 after that disgusting Beta. It was clear that game was not of the higher quality of the prior games. In fact i love Campaigns and that Campaign was laughable at least from the Vids i saw. The linearity, downgrade in graphics and destruction. Just an awful game (just my opinion). EA is going down the shoot very quickly. They used to be my favorite Gaming Company back in the day, but their Sports Games, Medal of Honor and Battlefield Franchises suck in pure simple English.

@jagdedge124 Are you referring to the demo or the beta? The beta was only multiplayer and was for trying to iron out some of the kinks before the game was released. It wasn't a representation of the final release. The beta didn't have the campaign mode and so not sure how you're able to compare to previous campaigns. Now if you played the demo and are comparing the two, that's different. BF3 is a really good game, but if you don't like, then you just don't like it, whether you played the game or not. You are definitely entitled to your opinion considering it's your money that you are spending.

@richten71 Right i just don't think it really added up to Bad Company 2 or even prior releases. I mean others are saying this as well, i'm certainly not the only one.

What i'm critiquing isn't really lag issues, or server issues, or otherwise issues ironed out during a Beta. I'm talking about destruction, the outlandishly short linear campaign (a bad campaign for me is a no buy) and even graphics that i think took a back step to prior titles. The game just does not look or feel nearly as "solid" as those games.

Look i've been playing EA games since Medal of Honor in 99. EA and that Franchise got me into playing games, and so it's tough for me to see this happening to EA.

I guess i'm getting kind of wise in a way that i don't feel i should spend good money on a game that is sub par from prior titles.

Look BF is not near the only one. Many say MW3 is not near as good as MW2 (i never bought that either). I guess i just hate to see games diminish to the point they have, as the companies get greedier and greedier, while people fall for it.

@-Six-Shooter- @richten71 There's more than enough Media out there today to see the game for ourselves. The Beta, aside from server issues, or lag issues etc IS the game when it comes to Graphics, Destruction and overall Gameplay. Obviously, i do have an opinion, and you're gonna have to deal with it as you already have. The game sucks at least as compared to prior titles, and i'm glad i didn't waste my money, as well as further monies in the future given this obvious move based on greed by EA. I think shareholders given the latest information over at CNBC agree. Good day.

@jagdedge124 @richten71 Don't judge a game by either trailers, beta's or what other people tell you! either buy the game or don't have a opinion on it's gameplay...

@jagdedge124 actually the game is pretty good and of very high quality, also the previous games? those were just like this one, bf2 was a mess before a lot of patches. And i thought the beta was very solid and not buggy for a beta, we all have our own experiences though.

@yeah_28 Right well like i said on my comment it was just my opinion. Obviously others don't like others opinions, and namecalling isn't going to win the argument. I just think that as compared to prior Battlefield Games, this one is much more linear, lack of destructability and the Campaign was lacking as compared to the previous ones. I understand it was a Beta, but in the points i criticized, Beta or no Beta, that is the game. I loved BC 1, 43 and 2. This is not those games, and in my own opinion, worse than those games.

I still play BF3 once a week and usually a longer session of a few hours so I most likely will buy anything that comes out for this game. It's worth it IMO, since I have not touched another shooter online. Bought MW3 played it literally 5 times.

I'm not sure what is sadder...the fact EA and Activision are doing this or the fact that there will plenty of people who will buy these subscriptions thus reinforcing the action of subscription based games.

well, cod's effortless success and money grabbing strategies continue to ruin other games and give publishers what they've always wanted.

Well they did say EA is one of the worst companies in the world lol, so yeah kinda expected. The always put random bullshit in their games to squeeze their customers dry of all their cash, and they wonder why they lose fans daily.

I think it's a missed opportunity to go the paid route for this kind of thing instead of a campaign where you earn your keep via sharing things on social networks and doing other 'jobs' to 'pay' your way through. Case in point, the Tristana and Alistar skins in League of Legends. You get them via Facebook and Youtube. You save yourself an incredible amount of money from doing this over traditional advertising... but no, everything is money upfront. It's shamefully uncreative.

No thanks. Battlefield 3 was a disappointment, but even if it was the greatest game ever, I'll never let a company nickel and dime me with **** that should be free. But companies show their customer appreciation by squeezing every penny they can out of them.

I think it would just be easier for publishers to send us all a box of condoms with each game they release and tell to hold onto them until they decide to come over and rape us up the ass. They are doing it already with their crappy prices so it will just be a matter of time....a matter of time.....

Wow, it really took you guys about a whole week to pick this news up?

Anyway, it's funny how EA has completely gone against their original marketing, in which they constantly bashed COD elite and made loads of emphsis on Battlelog being free.

There's no way I'd be doing this. If I'm going to have a different dog tag than others, I want it to be because I achieved something, not because I paid for it.

well i imagine some one at dice told ea that it will make a lot of money......anyway, i doubt it would be that bad. im guessing that you would automatically get any dlc that comes out. like season pass? (i dunno about elite cos no way im paying for that on top of an already expensive game)

@zulwalks It would actually be the other way around, EA are the ones who have control over DICE

DICE on its own used to make statements like promising to never charge for map packs or any extra content in BF games... look at them now...

It says theres gonna be new assignments. You gotta pay for them first only then can you achieve them, right? Pretty much as with an expansion. Oh and you gotta have to pay for Close Quarters right? Idk, but I'm pretty sure it doesnt come free

@Raisiine I'm not buying Close Quarters, looks really dull and boring. Loads of wasted potential.

If they were to be unlocked by assignments then I would be more ok with it, but I still have issues with it, along with doubting the fact EA/DICE would make their casual audience work for such a thing anyway.
