BioWare details save import options for Dragon Age: Inquisition

New save file system allows users to create customised historical world states from scratch to use in Dragon Age: Inquisition.

BioWare has revealed a method for creating save files to use in its upcoming game, Dragon Age: Inquisition. Posted on the official BioWare Blog, Dragon Age executive producer Mark Darrah announced the Dragon Age Keep.

No Caption Provided

The Dragon Age Keep allows players to create a customised Dragon Age historical world state, which carries over choices made in Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II.

Players will be able to customise "as much or as little about the world of Thedas" using the Dragon Age Keep. This customised world state will then be possible to import into Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Darrah also stated that importing game saves is an issue that BioWare is "continuing to investigate". In particular, how saves from previous games could be utilised to "populate the initial world state of the Dragon Age Keep". Darrah did not specify whether importing saves directly into Dragon Age: Inquisition will be possible.

Fans interested in the Dragon Age Keep can sign up for the beta on the site. The Dragon Age Keep is scheduled for public launch in 2014.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is the third major title in BioWare's fantasy role-playing game series, Dragon Age. BioWare has confirmed that players will be able to create characters from multiple races. Dragon Age: Inquisition will be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in 2014.

@Riddick123 Don't blame Bioware just because you have hearing problems and has a low number of brain cells to understand a story.

@Riddick123 But what about the Colourblind people? They will still only have one choice.

I don't trust Bioware to make the choices meaningful anymore. They just shape their own choices, and go along with that instead. Bringing back the dead and such.

The reason they are introducing DA keep (at least partly) because they had a hard time figuring out how to make the save files importable, and they didn't wan't to lose the the ability for players to shape their own DA world through previous DA choices. Since, my saves are long since lost, I welcome this approach :) Although, it's downside is that you will be exposed to spoilers from previous DAs.

And since everyone is mentioning DA2, I can't seem to agree with all the bashing it has been getting. The combat is 2 steps up the ladder better, and the story is just as good. The characters felt much more alive comparing to other DAs. They only thing I outright hated was the recycling of the same area designs, without any effort to hide it. Glad that has been addressed in the DAI.

@Oncus I actually liked the combat in DA2 better than the original DAO... BUT... I still prefer the original storywise... campaign wise to DA2... I just hope BIO manages to fuse what worked with both games to create DAI... otherwise... next year will be the year of the white wolf from Poland :)

@R_Mckay I agree that the fission of both games would really give good results if done properly. There are a lot of things I want to see imported from DA2, including a speaking main character, more memorable companions/conversations, and the skill cooldowns system opposed to mana/stamina expenditure, which I think is far easier to balance out. Witcher will always have a reserved place for me :)

@Oncus DA:O was geared toward PC's and influenced by the old Bioware titles like Baldur's Gate. PC gamers loved it and console gamer's weren't as impressed. DA:2 was developed with consoles in and controllers mind, even the story focused on one character was a nod to console tradition. Console gamers thought it was an improvement and most PC gamers were disappointed and a vocal minority outright hated it.

There's no way I'm buying this game until I see reviews and feedback about how they navigated the line between what each group wants.

@Oncus I agree with pretty much all you said. Still people being people and the Internet being the Internet means we will here them complain about DA2 till the next console generation after Xbox One and PS4.

frankly I have been following this game on forums and their site its shaping up pretty damn well, lots of DA:O influence with lots of improvement.

they are pretty much scrapping everything they did in DA2 (thank god for that) except the story, even the character designs and environments, all are more realistic and well made.

frankly I just like to pretend that DA2 just did not happen

@shingui5 @vadagar1 I actually have DAO installed still on my new shiny PC, DA2... tried to play it again, got bored rather quickly and uninstalled just as quick... altho I liked the faster combat of DA2.

At first I thought that I hope they won't penalize people who don't want to play DA2, and then I remembered that I'm not buying EA published games any more :)

I was wondering how they were going to handle importing saved games with the transition from current gen consoles into next gen. Good to know they've come up with a solution

@northArrow just the way the handled it in mass effect.... lip service :'( and an occassional mention in some log or such (BUT) I'm really hoping they actually get DAI right... BIO needs it in the wake of the last two games they pushed out :)

@corrus Developers don't control anything about their games. They have to do what the publisher tells them to. They can't even fix bugs unless the publisher okays it.

@ggregd @picho86 Maybe you two live in a different, better universe than I. In my universe, the publishers, who fund the game, have the final say in everything. They decide what they want in the game.

There are different contracts, but in general, the publisher enforces draconian contracts on developers because they can. The developers don't have much choice in the matter. They need funding to make games. I've heard it multiple times from prominent individuals in the industry. If you have any evidence to the contrary, I'll be happy to see it.

@picho86 These articles don't really support your contention that developers control nothing and can't sneeze without the publisher's permission.

That said it's true that publishers are exerting more and more control over the development process and stifling creativity in the name of rehashing what has already been successful. That's why so many old school devs are going to Kickstarter. It's just not as tyrannical as you're making it out to be.

@shingui5 @picho86 @corrus That's why games lately suck so much. Also, you give way too much credit to EA.

So you told me that I'm wrong based on what you think and not what you know?

can you give proof to the contrary?

Because implying that developers are completely restrained by the whims of publishers, really disparages the creativity of developers.

Apart from that, a publisher exerting so much control inevitable leads to a worse product. Any good publisher knows this. Perhaps of course, EA.

this is actually rather cool. A good way for people to try new things out from save imports without having to slug through DA2.
