BioWare details save import options for Dragon Age: Inquisition

New save file system allows users to create customised historical world states from scratch to use in Dragon Age: Inquisition.

BioWare has revealed a method for creating save files to use in its upcoming game, Dragon Age: Inquisition. Posted on the official BioWare Blog, Dragon Age executive producer Mark Darrah announced the Dragon Age Keep.

No Caption Provided

The Dragon Age Keep allows players to create a customised Dragon Age historical world state, which carries over choices made in Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II.

Players will be able to customise "as much or as little about the world of Thedas" using the Dragon Age Keep. This customised world state will then be possible to import into Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Darrah also stated that importing game saves is an issue that BioWare is "continuing to investigate". In particular, how saves from previous games could be utilised to "populate the initial world state of the Dragon Age Keep". Darrah did not specify whether importing saves directly into Dragon Age: Inquisition will be possible.

Fans interested in the Dragon Age Keep can sign up for the beta on the site. The Dragon Age Keep is scheduled for public launch in 2014.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is the third major title in BioWare's fantasy role-playing game series, Dragon Age. BioWare has confirmed that players will be able to create characters from multiple races. Dragon Age: Inquisition will be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in 2014.

I had a feeling they would do something like this, but for future games where importing saves couldn't be done.

@toddx77 That IS what's happening here. They completely shifted game engines, and now they're having trouble importing DAO and DA2 saves.

@Doomerang @toddx77 A new game engine should have nothing to do with the ability to import gamesaves or not.
A savefile is just a piece of data. In this case, with data about what choices you picked in earlier games.
Bioware know how the data is arranged since they created it, and they should be able to extract it.
It's just a basic database with data about your choices, it's shameful that they can't make a ingame tool that can extract that data.

@Doomerang tell me you're joking

its a piece of data bioware created, and it shouldnt be difficult for them to read at all. photoshop and word are developed by different companies, they are different formats of data. itd just be like inserting a burger in your ass to eat. this is not the case here. save file is, as Foppe said, just a container for data, and even i could build something to make it work with DA3

@Doomerang @Foppe @toddx77 It's more of a case that many people are getting new systems soon and the ps4 and X1 don't have backwards compatibility. This is also help full if you want to play the series on a new system. You can bring your save from the xbox to the ps3.

@Foppe @Doomerang @toddx77 It's nowhere near as simple as that. Just because it is a "piece of data" does not automatically mean it's compatible with another engine or program. Otherwise, you'd be able to open photoshop files with MS Word, which is obviously not the case.

I actually considered making a mod for Dragon Age Origins that was somewhat like this. I had the idea to create an NPC you can talk to and make choices you would normally make throughout the game, setting all the necessary flags for importing it into DA2.

It would be kinda like the comics they did for ME2 and ME3, but cover all of the choices instead of only some of them. I never got around to making the mod because then they made the absolutely stupid decision not to release a toolset for DA2.

@Auriken They have all been done by comunity members not long after each game came out, the ME 1 and 2 save makers being some of the most comprehensive I've seen they are amazing

So this Dragon's Keep thing it sounds similar to the mass effect thing where they used a comic book like storytelling feature to edit past events...hpe it's a bit more detailed, but I'll check it out.

Probably a feature that won't be used much. Origins was good but I couldn't make it through DA2 and I damn sure am not going to go back and play through it for a save file.

@Slade968 Thats why you can use the Keep. You can just create important decisions in DA2. Like choosing over Templar or Mages. So you wont have to play.

All I can say is that I hope it is more like DA:Origins and less like DA2.

If you get the PS3, 360, or PC versions, you can still just import your saves, right?

@pound-u I would hope so, but I think Bioware is probably going to do a one size fits all.

@toddx77 @pound-u yeah i think you are right. The issue probably has more to do with the change in game engines and not in the new generation of consoles.

Can't wait for DA Inquisition! Option to import your save from the previous game is a really cool idea, which I'd like to see in more games. I loved Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2 was pretty good as well. I just hope that EA won't make some stupid decisions regarding DLC, but they're EA, so what else can you expect. And how is this ''we don't deliver offline experiences any more'' thing going to work out?

I just wonder about the Witch hunt dlc. It wasn't that good but it seems really important.
