Blizzard confirms next-gen MMOG called Titan

Following purportedly leaked release schedule, cofounder Frank Pearce says studio has begun talking about title as a recruitment tool.

Early this month, an austere document appeared online purporting to be Blizzard Entertainment's road map for the next five years. Dated April 2, 2010, the document listed quarterly release windows for all of the Irvine, California-based studio's projects, including Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm (Q4 2011), Diablo 3 (Q4 2011), and World of Warcraft's fourth expansion (Q2 2012). Also appearing in that chart was a mystery project, bearing the title Titan and a Q4 2013 release window.

Blizzard insists Titan won't be one of World of Warcraft's competitors.
Blizzard insists Titan won't be one of World of Warcraft's competitors.

Though the validity of the chart is apocryphal at best, it has been lent some measure of credence this week, courtesy of none other than Blizzard cofounder and executive vice president Frank Pearce. As part of the 2010 VGA ceremony, Pearce spoke with gaming blog Destructoid, confirming Titan as at the very least a working title for the studio's much-speculated upon new massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

"Titan is… the media is not meant to know anything about that," Pearce said. "It's our next-gen MMO, and we've only started talking about it in a limited fashion because we want to leverage the fact that we're working on something like that for the purpose of recruiting--getting some of the best talent in the industry on that."

Blizzard has been teasing out pieces of its next big project since 2007, when it confirmed that a non-World of Warcraft MMOG was in development. The game, which Blizzard does not see as a competitor to WOW, will be an all-new property with, according to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, "a little more broad appeal."

"broad appeal" can be taken in two ways in videogame lingo---- something that tries to fit in with most populer genre->fps :( ,. or hopefully something that will intrest gamers of many genres :) ,. i think mass effect is a perfect example of how "broad appeal" has worked in the past. i guess we will have to wait n see .

@Fabbe131 No hate. I play ALL of the games you mentioned and know perfectly well of their success. The idea is NOT the fact that they MADE good games, but rather that this game so far, from this article, has NO INFORMATION, and people are already wanting to reserve it, without even knowing what it is. Its like the people who eat/sleep/breath Apple or Windows. They swear something is going to be amazing, without knowing a single thing. How do you know this game will be better? Because its Blizzard? Shall i point out mistakes other amazing companies have made, even with amazing records?

@CarlitosWay What's up with the hate? Just look at the games blizzard have made, they have all been a HUGE success. Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo and Wow. This next game will probably as good or even better than the ones before it.

@Vengeancekael The two games don't have so many differences. My personal opinion is that WH 40K is a better game than SC2. WH40K has unit control, base building and expansion (both equipment and territorial). I didn't mean Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II, I meant the previous one. There are differences in resource management (and maybe heroes) but I don't think that these are points that make the two games incomparable. They both are RTS right?

If I could have one wish in the vg world, it would be for blizzard to make a wild west mmorpg. But, it's not gonna happen.

@kdamian You can't say that WH40k is better than SC2 because the gameplay is completely different: There are no heroes in SC2 and there's base building. Warhammer focuses only on unit control while SC2 focuses both on base building and taking expansions and controlling your army.

Everyone seems to be convinced that this new mmorpg will be starcraft based. While a starcraft mmo sounds great, I for one look forward to an entirely new experience, maybe even fps wise and yes a space setting sounds great. While I am not speculating what the game will or will not turn out to be, has anyone even conceived the idea that this could be a Diablo mmorpg instead? That said, I still prefer something new and entirely different and a mmofps would be an exciting new direction for blizzard indeed.

@Doomrul an mmofps actually "is" a little more broad appeal. modern warfare 2 sold 20 million and we're talking about an mmo here.

I just hope its around the Blackthorn universe, that game ruled and it would be an interesting and different universe to play in, also possible M rating. But I agree, really its gonna be like 2015 for this thing to hit.

I agree with Doomrul... the "broad appeal" comment makes me worry. When someone says "braod appeal", I immediately think of Wii (and not in a good way either).

This will be a fantastic game cause the one thing is blizzard is never in a rush and will always make sure that their games are as good as they can be before they ship it. Its just a matter of when this game will be out.

I had hoped for a title a little more fun than "titan".... Its widely known that they were developing this, in fact i personally knew from before they hinted in 2007 cause a buddy of mine has a friend who works at blizzard, but even at that, it shouldnt come as a suprise! I am a WoW gamer, so good to know another expansion is to come ;)!

LOL there is not a SINGLE detail on here as to what the game is going to be like, where its taking place, what its design is... And yet this title made it to the top ten in GS...Seriously? While Blizzard has made amazing games, people can make mistakes. This could be a total flop. I dont know what the hype is for something that is, in the media's eyes, still an IDEA. This thing for sure wont come out 2013. So please guys. How about getting off the Blizzard bandwagon, at least until REAL details of this thing appear. Companies have made really bad games in the past, even with huge blockbuster titles under their name.

Blizz is a great company but if you have played their games since...1995 (15 years! ffs) then it is easy to see how their ideas are applied to all 3 games. I hope Titan is something new, I hope it is a new idea. All these years I can say that the games Blizz makes are FUN to play and this is the most important thing. I played AION, girls are sexier that Blood Elf girls, nice graphics but...have returned to WoW after 1 month. But I think War 40K is better that Starcraft II (imho).

If said game were in dev at any other place than Blizzard then I would agree with some doubts about the awesomeness of D3. Blizzard just doesnt lay turds though. Their track record is sterling, so I cant fault the guy for assuming that it will continue to be true. [I'm positive Diablo III is gonna blow us away, it will be AWESOME How can you say that? Have you played Diablo III? Are you a developer?]

It should be finished and launch sometime between 2017 and 2019 if Blizzards track record is any indication. I know they polish and polish, so Im not complaining. I'm only stating the obvious.

A great company like Blizzard with its funds and experience could make this new MMO the next big thing. I would love it if they would make something like Tabula Rasa, but with the great depth that World of Warcraft has. Personally I think that the current themes and gameplay formulas are getting boring. Some cool ideas would be a Sci-Fi intergalactic expansion game with awesome combat, a Military MMO, a World War game, a cool Medieval game with castles and knights or... a Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War MMO made by Blizzard! :O I would buy the lifetime subscription in a jiffy.

I honestly think that the old mmo system isnt going to work anymore and that with games like TOR that actually bring the story of the game to life along with Blizzards awesome work with phasing that were going to start seeing the way new mmos will be developed. People want this single player experience where the game feels like its focused just on them and their party members, but they also want the aspect of pvp and end game raiding and companies are responding and being forced to adapt to the ever changing market. Is a good thing.

After that crap called Starcraft 2, Blizzard is dead to me. Announcing a lot of remake games. Diablo 3? So far another simple remake with few new elements and crappy colorful gay graphics that doesn't do the lore of the game any justice. Now a "World of Warcraft for dummies"? Or WoW will become the "for dummies" version of the new game? Let's wait and see. I just think that with the kind of money that Blizzard make per month with WoW subscriptions, they have both time and resources to make much better games than they are showing. They have turned into a bunch of lazy developers with their granted retirement.

@athenian29 see my previous post? I said that we should not BELIEVE what they say until it is announced offically. Wasn't Bioware that tried to DENY that SWTOR was not a SW IP? How many companies DENY or mis-report what the next "big game" they are releasing will be. No kiddies, believe it only when it is offically announced and they give you a REAL NAME and maybe even a short vid.

@Gruug No, you don't understand me. Blizzard actually has explicitly said in a previous press release that this new MMO is a completely brand new IP. They actually came out and said it. This isn't a "half-something-we-did-before" like Starcraft Ghost may have been or like World of Warcraft is now. It's completely, entirely, 100% never-before-seen-from-the-likes-of-Blizzard new.

I know that a Titan is a creator thing, not necessarily God, but given the ability to construct worlds in Warcraft lore. Sargaras was a titan that went bad, so perhaps they are creating some kind of construction game. A sort of Spore like game, however I think this would be over the top even for a company like Blizzard

At last, the first original idea in 15 years!! It was about time that Blizzard came with something new instead of recycling once and again their two only successful ideas since their promising but not-blockbuster debut (Blackthorne)...
