Blizzard confirms next-gen MMOG called Titan

Following purportedly leaked release schedule, cofounder Frank Pearce says studio has begun talking about title as a recruitment tool.

Early this month, an austere document appeared online purporting to be Blizzard Entertainment's road map for the next five years. Dated April 2, 2010, the document listed quarterly release windows for all of the Irvine, California-based studio's projects, including Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm (Q4 2011), Diablo 3 (Q4 2011), and World of Warcraft's fourth expansion (Q2 2012). Also appearing in that chart was a mystery project, bearing the title Titan and a Q4 2013 release window.

Blizzard insists Titan won't be one of World of Warcraft's competitors.
Blizzard insists Titan won't be one of World of Warcraft's competitors.

Though the validity of the chart is apocryphal at best, it has been lent some measure of credence this week, courtesy of none other than Blizzard cofounder and executive vice president Frank Pearce. As part of the 2010 VGA ceremony, Pearce spoke with gaming blog Destructoid, confirming Titan as at the very least a working title for the studio's much-speculated upon new massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

"Titan is… the media is not meant to know anything about that," Pearce said. "It's our next-gen MMO, and we've only started talking about it in a limited fashion because we want to leverage the fact that we're working on something like that for the purpose of recruiting--getting some of the best talent in the industry on that."

Blizzard has been teasing out pieces of its next big project since 2007, when it confirmed that a non-World of Warcraft MMOG was in development. The game, which Blizzard does not see as a competitor to WOW, will be an all-new property with, according to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, "a little more broad appeal."

If its another grind fest, or if its another game where you just press a button and watch you character attack... count me out. Still, they say its "not a competitor" to WoW so that makes me think they'll take a more action-oriented approach. And when he says "A little more broad appeal" I think he means "Kinda like call of duty!"

Please do not be a Star Craft MMO. I like star craft as an RTS, I can see it as a cool MMO, but please keep making the RTS's every 10 years is a bit long of a window but that is better than making it an MMO.

@vortex_gw I would imagine that this is just a placeholder title for the game. Excited to see what the details are though.

Titan? Why don't they choose a name that doesn't point at Warhammer 40k and says, "Hahah, we ripped you off again!"? After The Old Republic comes out you won't need any other MMO.

@Shawn45 you realize blizzard has such a strong name brand and also damn near fantatical player loyalty that they could release one of the worst MMO launches ever and turn it out to be gold by years end with patches. They dont need the ----Craft games to sell their new product, unlike you (which is fine don't get me wrong) most wow players never even played any prior warcraft games and could care less if it was even warcraft at all.

hopefully "titan" is just a code-name, because it's too generic sounding. also, the only way it's going to NOT compete with WoW is if it's for consoles only. and even then, a lot of people have both PC and consoles.. oh blizzard. you so crazy.

How could it not be a competitor, it's in the MMOG genre. I'm pretty sure it's going to be some Sci-Fi FPS, that will probably have RPG elements. It's going to be interesting, either it's in competition with Activisions FPS, or Blizzards MMORPG. The other interesting bit of information is that it sounds like a new IP, which they haven't done in a long time. Going to be interesting to see what they're developing.

Making an MMO on a new property is suicide in my opinion. The only reason I bought and played WoW was because I LOVED the warcraft series before it. If there hadn't been a built in fanbase for WoW already, I don't think it would have done nearly as well, especially considering how horribly buggy it was in the beginning. Also, how CAN'T this be in direct competition with WoW? I'm not going to pay 30 bucks a month on online games, it would only be one or the other. Unless if you're subscribed to one you're also subscribed to the other (Now there's an idea). I feel like Blizzard has an inflated ego from all the success they've had lately, I think it's going to bomb.
