Blizzard confirms next-gen MMOG called Titan

Following purportedly leaked release schedule, cofounder Frank Pearce says studio has begun talking about title as a recruitment tool.

Early this month, an austere document appeared online purporting to be Blizzard Entertainment's road map for the next five years. Dated April 2, 2010, the document listed quarterly release windows for all of the Irvine, California-based studio's projects, including Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm (Q4 2011), Diablo 3 (Q4 2011), and World of Warcraft's fourth expansion (Q2 2012). Also appearing in that chart was a mystery project, bearing the title Titan and a Q4 2013 release window.

Blizzard insists Titan won't be one of World of Warcraft's competitors.
Blizzard insists Titan won't be one of World of Warcraft's competitors.

Though the validity of the chart is apocryphal at best, it has been lent some measure of credence this week, courtesy of none other than Blizzard cofounder and executive vice president Frank Pearce. As part of the 2010 VGA ceremony, Pearce spoke with gaming blog Destructoid, confirming Titan as at the very least a working title for the studio's much-speculated upon new massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

"Titan is… the media is not meant to know anything about that," Pearce said. "It's our next-gen MMO, and we've only started talking about it in a limited fashion because we want to leverage the fact that we're working on something like that for the purpose of recruiting--getting some of the best talent in the industry on that."

Blizzard has been teasing out pieces of its next big project since 2007, when it confirmed that a non-World of Warcraft MMOG was in development. The game, which Blizzard does not see as a competitor to WOW, will be an all-new property with, according to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, "a little more broad appeal."

Broad appeal? Then it's most likely a console MMO or a F2P MMO (aka microtransactions fest)

@Ronnie_Rim I'm sorry but how is that statement even relevant? Seems rather moot to me, did they say they were making a new game based off pretense that it's already been done before?.

it sounds like it is going to be a console MMO with the broad appeal talk and the fact that bobby kotick said it :P and the fact that it is not a WoW competitor because any MMO on pc would have to be a WoW competitor really, and maybe for the new consoles if it is a next gen MMO.

Could this be the world of Titan as in the old Fighting Fantasty books from the 1980's? Does anyone remember those wrote by steve jackson and Ian livingstone??

'Broad Appeal' translates to 'dumbed down'. However, this confuses me; as WoW is not the 'deepest' MMO out there. Lancer VI

Well if they want to keep their investors they -have- to use buzzwords like broad appeal, easy-to-learn-hard-to-master, other crap like that. Of course they want it to be popular, I think that's probably the least specific detail I've ever heard about a game launch.

Just wanted to clear up some misconceptions about the title. The actual name of the game has yet to be released, Titan is just the project's code name. (Diablo 3 was Hydra, StarCraft 2 was Medusa) I'm beginning to see a trend. :P

"a little more broad appeal" means the graphics engine is going to be even worse than wow's so that even more people can play it on their ipad and cellphones. basically we are going backwards in technology eventually all games from blizzard will look like pong

@SpArKs424 I disagree. Blizzard has earned all of its accolades. There are areas where they are weak (originality for one), but where they shine, they SHINE. The main reason Blizzard gets so much respect is that they never release an unfinished game (SC 2 release plans notwithstanding). If you buy a Blizzard game, you know that you are going to get a polished product. There is some validity to the Apple comparison though. Both companies focus on being user friendly and having appeal to the masses. Blizzard games scale really well to older machines to increase the user base and Apple creates UIs that old people can easily figure out how to use. On the negative side, they are both industry leaders and take advantage of that to line their pockets (if it has an "i" at the beggining, it will cost you more; $60 for a PC game). Another thing they have in common is that some people like to bash them just because they think bashing what is popular makes them cool. Blizzard delivers. Apple delivers, too. The iPad is the best device for on the couch web surfing EVER. And anyone who says it doesn't have "real games" hasn't tried Infinity Blade. And it just got Sim City Deluxe a couple of days ago. I know it is off-topic, but this has been a great week for iPad gaming, especially with the EA holiday sale.

I'm interested in knowing if Titan really is to be a First Person Shooter. It seems odd that they might be developing a MMOFPS, but as of right now it's all just speculation. Guess we have to wait a few years to learn more about it.

Titan sounds like it would be a name for a sci-fi MMO since it's not competing with WoW. "Warhammer 40K MMO Not Competing With World of Warcraft" is an article by IGN, so I figure the whole "...not competing with WoW" bizness will mean Sci-Fi.

Knowing Blizzard's success in the RTS field, I really wouldn't mind seeing a MMORTS. Still, if it has more broad appeal then that idea is probably out, as the RTS is a niche genre. But anything Blizzard does is worth looking into, despite what WoW haters would have you think.

It probably won't be a FPS. Blizzard excels at digital fashion shows and know the value of letting you get addicted to getting the latest shiny armor on your character. If they go shooter, I would expect a third person perspective.

If there is a subscription fee it will compete with WoW. Doesn't matter if it is a Hello Kitty MMO. A lot of people will not or cannot pay for more than one game at a time.

@keech And you seem to be fond of wishful thinking. It won't be either, because it has "broader appeal", they want to seel it to te same people MS aims Kinect and Sony aims the Move launch now. Blizzard will make their own second life, probably with dance, music and other VERY silly minigames in it. Count me out. I'll be playing SWTOR or GW2 by then.

Well Vanguard was free for all Everquest players. If Blizzard does the same for WoW->Titan just to get people into the new game a little bit, I think it could work out. Of course the game still needs to be good for players to stick with it longer than a few months. Knowing Activision it probably won't be like that, but maybe a longer free trial (3-6 months) for players coming from WoW.

@Shawn45 You seen to have a pretty narrow definition of what MMOG means. Especially concerning a game that has virtually no information on it. This game could be a MMO first person shooter or strategy game with RPG elements for all we know. As far as monthly fees: Blizzard could offer a discount on the monthly fees if you have a subscription to both this new game and WoW. Square-Enix did the same for people who had subscriptions to both Final Fantasy XI and XIV. Or they could go with a micro-transaction free to play model.

@Shawn45 Name a Blizzard game in the last decade that has "bombed". They are the best at what they do and I don't feel a bomb is in the realm of possiblity for them. (And no SC Ghost and that weird Warcraft game don't count as bombs)
