Blizzard confirms next-gen MMOG called Titan

Following purportedly leaked release schedule, cofounder Frank Pearce says studio has begun talking about title as a recruitment tool.

Early this month, an austere document appeared online purporting to be Blizzard Entertainment's road map for the next five years. Dated April 2, 2010, the document listed quarterly release windows for all of the Irvine, California-based studio's projects, including Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm (Q4 2011), Diablo 3 (Q4 2011), and World of Warcraft's fourth expansion (Q2 2012). Also appearing in that chart was a mystery project, bearing the title Titan and a Q4 2013 release window.

Blizzard insists Titan won't be one of World of Warcraft's competitors.
Blizzard insists Titan won't be one of World of Warcraft's competitors.

Though the validity of the chart is apocryphal at best, it has been lent some measure of credence this week, courtesy of none other than Blizzard cofounder and executive vice president Frank Pearce. As part of the 2010 VGA ceremony, Pearce spoke with gaming blog Destructoid, confirming Titan as at the very least a working title for the studio's much-speculated upon new massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

"Titan is… the media is not meant to know anything about that," Pearce said. "It's our next-gen MMO, and we've only started talking about it in a limited fashion because we want to leverage the fact that we're working on something like that for the purpose of recruiting--getting some of the best talent in the industry on that."

Blizzard has been teasing out pieces of its next big project since 2007, when it confirmed that a non-World of Warcraft MMOG was in development. The game, which Blizzard does not see as a competitor to WOW, will be an all-new property with, according to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, "a little more broad appeal."

Wont be a competitor but likely will attempt to replace a game thats years old and make sure they dont lose their paying customers. WOW must die eventually.

Um, I think some of you might need to read the article before saying to yourself this will be a starcraft MMO or some other existing game. Blizzard does not see as a competitor to WOW, will be an ALL-NEW PROPERTY with, according to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, All new property means NEW, not existing......

now, on topic... I'm interested to see what this game is about, but i'm not interested in playing it. i hate WoW and i don't like StarCraft much at all. Diablo is awesome, but we'll see how number 3 turns out. we all know that eventually Activision will own Blizzard, right? we'll get a new starcraft and diablo every year.

I am surprised how many people didnt read the entire article. People are saying they hope it to be a StarCraft MMO or other existed or existing game. You all missed..."The game, which Blizzard does not see as a competitor to WOW, will be an all-new property" " an all-new property" means new, never made, not related to any game out there.

I just have a feeling that Titan is going to be a MMO Strategy game. Like League of Legends, except a lot lot bigger, and more complex elements, and leveling system.

An MMO that's not an RPG could be interesting.Maybe a Starcraft FPS MMO?Yeah?Maybe? It'd be like Planetside, except much, much better, perhaps?

I just pray to god that it has nothing to do with knights, dragons, or w/e other fantasy thing is out there. The last thing we need is another run of the mill fantasy themed rpg. Secondly, please don't make it anything like WoW. Make it unique, if possible, and more importantly, fun to play. If there is one thing I am sick of, it's the same MMO coming out over and over again. I'm not a big fan of Blizzard (I like their older, SNES era games better than their new ones), but I'm sure if anyone can inject the MMO genre with some juice, it's Blizzard. But you know what I'd REALLY like to see Blizzard bring back? Blackthorne. We need a good Blackthorne game.

Blizzard is not as it use to be. Don't u expect much dudes. It will be a MMORPG for next gen and that's all. If Blizzard is not known for one thing, it is its creativity. All they do is to ripoff popular stuff of the era. Expect a potpourri of all gaming successes with the Blizzard sauce. If those dudes in Blizzard are good in one thing, it's marketing and presentation. You can be sure that Titan will have a great gameplay and will be very accessible to anyone. That's all you should expect.

A game in which all of the "best talent in the industry" will be working on. Playing the game would be like entering a schizophrenic world if everyone had their way with what they wanted. Or it could be one of the greatest games ever made. Time will tell. Now that I've added my objective two-cents... HELLSYEAH! OMGWTFBBQ!? I'M SO BUYING THIS RIGHT HURR.

I'll be pretty surprised if Titan is out by Q4 2013. But the road map isn't meant to be accurate (assuming its real), Blizzard themselves said that the date was wrong for the first SC2 expansion according to the map. It will be awesome if Diablo 3 really does get two expansions though!

No doubt Bobby Kotick wants to get his grubby hands on this project so he can buy a new Gulstream private jet. Here's hoping I make it like Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook so that I can buy out Blizzard. Then I'll say "You guys can do whatever you like. Get those creative juices rolling!"

@Zophar87 I went to Gamestop the other day, and when I scanned at their Pre-order list for the PC, Diablo 3 was on it and it' release date was 11/1/11.. I asked them if this was sure, they said it could change.

Diablo 3 in Q4 2011? Titan in 2013? That should give Mad King Kotlick plenty of time to embarrass Blizzard just before next Christmas! I bet he's home right now counting the money already as we type. I don't play bulky, expensive subscription-based games and Titan sounds like another epic wallet drain that I won't be interested in if it goes the WoW route (and I can't see it not being the same persistent wallet/clock grind experience that WoW turned out to be). I will take one more chance with Diablo 3, but I'm losing interest in ActiBlizzard more each year.

Lol. A lot of WoW hate here. Looks like some casuals are mad because they couldn't get epics within an hour of hitting 85. That being said, I'm interested in the new MMOG but that's about all I can be considering how little we know thus far. However, I'm more interested about how this makes the leaked schedule more legitimate than originally thought. Will we see Diablo III next year?

@phoenixDs24 Considering Part one of Starcraft 2 came out, I think we're good on that until next year. Diablo 3, next year as well. If you want, go play D2 since that gets an update once in a blue moon (Still after all these years). Maybe the FINALLY found a way to incorporate a Starcraft MMO with Starcraft Ghost? You know, that game that died because Blizzard wasn't up to...

I was thinking maybe a Starcraft Universe MMO. It would be really fun to be able to explore the Starcraft Universe playing with any Starcraft race and/or being a speical or unique class (Human Marine, Protoss Templar, etc). I also think Bioware can create a "Mass Effect" MMO game too. That would be really fun!

Instead of flooding the market with yet another MMO, hows about they finish Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, and maybe, perhaps, revive Starcraft: Ghost first?
