Blizzard confirms next-gen MMOG called Titan

Following purportedly leaked release schedule, cofounder Frank Pearce says studio has begun talking about title as a recruitment tool.

Early this month, an austere document appeared online purporting to be Blizzard Entertainment's road map for the next five years. Dated April 2, 2010, the document listed quarterly release windows for all of the Irvine, California-based studio's projects, including Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm (Q4 2011), Diablo 3 (Q4 2011), and World of Warcraft's fourth expansion (Q2 2012). Also appearing in that chart was a mystery project, bearing the title Titan and a Q4 2013 release window.

Blizzard insists Titan won't be one of World of Warcraft's competitors.
Blizzard insists Titan won't be one of World of Warcraft's competitors.

Though the validity of the chart is apocryphal at best, it has been lent some measure of credence this week, courtesy of none other than Blizzard cofounder and executive vice president Frank Pearce. As part of the 2010 VGA ceremony, Pearce spoke with gaming blog Destructoid, confirming Titan as at the very least a working title for the studio's much-speculated upon new massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

"Titan is… the media is not meant to know anything about that," Pearce said. "It's our next-gen MMO, and we've only started talking about it in a limited fashion because we want to leverage the fact that we're working on something like that for the purpose of recruiting--getting some of the best talent in the industry on that."

Blizzard has been teasing out pieces of its next big project since 2007, when it confirmed that a non-World of Warcraft MMOG was in development. The game, which Blizzard does not see as a competitor to WOW, will be an all-new property with, according to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, "a little more broad appeal."

Q: What's better than a MMO which basically gives you a license to print money on a monthly basis? A: Two MMOs that give you a license to print money on a monthly basis.

Also, can we just get Diablo 3 out before we start announcing more far-off titles?

@chrisda Nope, didn't even glance at it. by the time the fourth and fifth WoW expansions come out, I will have had my soul devoured by SWTOR. even being aware of another WoW expansion is irrelevant to me. but Titan, that will be a force to be reckoned with! Thanks for the info and fact checking homie, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your thoughtfulness :P

Blizzard should consider making an MMO for the 360 and PS3. I believe big people at the company have discussed the concept, and with next generation consoles not looking likely anytime soon, a console MMO would be a huge money-spinner for Blizzard, and, more importantly, Activision.

I agree with torbonator, since WoW was a departure of Warcraft into the MMO land and made a huge success probably blizzard is thinking the same about Starcraft. With the expansions they pretty much have the competitive scene (aka South Korea) covered and they'll want to get as many customers as they can via lore and story and hey starcraft already has all that, only the correct implementation is needed. But if you ask me this is gonna kill Starcraft the same way WoW killed Warcraft. I just hope The Old Republic has some sort of success so that Blizzard may focus more on a story or campaign and less on grinding that's why I don't play MMOs and prefer RPGs.

If you think about yes 'Titan' can mean anything as it is just a codename, but it is highly likely that it could be space based. If you look at where WoW came from the Warcraft RTS.... What RTS did blizzard recently released this year.... Starcraft 2..... so it could be a Starcraft based MMOG.

The question is: Will we have to pay to play like with World of Warcraft? Hopefully not.

Hmmm, "a little more broad appeal". Sounds like a game for casual gamers. Not that much of a problem if World of Warcraft was as hardcore as i.e. Ninja Gaiden or Demon's Souls. But WoW has changed from a fairly hard game to an walk in the park, "Epic's for everyone!" right? So I'm afraid this is not my kind of game. (harder games are better, seriously!)

Tirion13 - i believe you are the 'undereducated' one. How do you think Titan was named. Do you think it was the Greek God or the moon Titan that was first named? We can speculate all we want but titan could be applied to anything. For all we know it could be an MMO about cheese.

A few of you seem a little undereducated. Titan is a moon that orbits Saturn and has a dense atmosphere. It has been the setting for many Sci-fi stories. Therefore the project name of Titan does not rule out the possibility of a sci-fi game. I hope it is a near future sci-fi game but there is nowhere near enough info to do more than guess.

I think it will be a space based mmorpg using an advanced graphics engine. Sort of like WoW, Gmod, Eve, Star Wars and Oblivion combined. Say you have a guild complete with engineers, leatherworkers, alchemists, miners, and gunsmiths. Make star ships, different kinds of planet and space based stations, and gear. Could take weeks to build a starship or a space station let alone days to get to your next destination. Tons of quests. Different kinds of propulsion, abilities, weapons, life forms, atmospheres, planets, and galaxies. Since WoW doesn't seem to want to advance into space, maybe this game will.

Look people....just because they SAY it won't be doesn't mean it will be so. We will only know for sure once the IP is actually announced. Now, I have never said it would be Starcraft. I was responding to someone else that is convinced it will be. My comment (again) was that IF IT WERE Starcraft that it would only be skinned to look like Starcraft and that it would have very little to do with the Starcraft is that most are familar with. Again, I have not said that it would be the IP. Only what it would be like if it turned out to be the Starcraft IP.

Actually fred wow is set up so you dont have to play all day to get enjoyment out of the game.. hell I am playing the new expansion and I might play for an hour or so after work. Do a couple of quests and maybe run a dungeon and I am already level 83. WOW is casual you silly person. It also caters to hardcore people as well.

even though I no longer play wow or any other mmo i'll be getting titan because it's blizzard, I've liked all of their games even though I know nothing about it. knowing blizzard though who aren't ever in a rush to meet a speculative deadline like q4 2013 I wouldn't be suprised if it comes out more like late 2014. sucks but that's a long time to wait.

It'll probably replace WOW; seeing as how the 4th expansion will be their last and Titan will be out a year and a half after that.

@Gruug From what we have been told, not in this article, but in other articles about the new MMO. it will be a completely new IP, so as of now, we can definitely say it wont be Starcraft.

@Gruug "The game, which Blizzard does not see as a competitor to WOW, will be an all-new property" Actually, he can say that it's definitely NOT StarCraft. It says RIGHT THERE IN THE FREAKING ARTICLE. Then if you click the link, it says it RIGHT THERE in that article. It is not Starcraft, it is not Warcraft. They've said it a dozen times- It's a new IP. And how is WoW very loosely based on the Warcraft IP? Have you played WC 3? Have you played WoW? The game is very much based on the WC IP as well as being heavily influenced by Diablo 2.

@athenian29 The way it is worded, you can not say that it is definately NOT Starcraft. My comment is in response to someone else who thought it would be a "good" thing if it were. I just have a counter point of view regarding Starcraft. That fact that WoW is very loosely (very very) based upon the old Warcraft IP just make me cringe at how they (Blizzard) might ruin a Starcraft "skinned" MMO.

Kind of a weird move to make another MMO when Warcraft is already dominating beyond belief. It'll most likely be really good but still...really odd move to make another game of the same genre.

Where have you all been? These comments are giving me a headache. We've known about this for over two years now... Everything up here we've known about except the name, and it's not even the name of the title. It's a project name. We've also known that they the reason anyone knows about this is because they wanted to hire developers. That's HOW we found out about it because they had a "next gen MMO" listed under their hiring page.

The fact that Bobby Kotick knows enough about the game to comment on its "broad appeal" disturbs and disgusts me. First, Blizzard and Activison may have been brought under one roof, but in no way does Blizzard answer to Activision. Keep Kotick's little clawed appendages away. Just let him gnaw on the carcass of one of his shuttered studios or something. Second, how can a game have a wider appeal than Warcraft? WoW is pretty basic as it is; I hear hardcore players complain how casual the game is all the time. So tha makes me think it will either be free to play, or similar to a facebook game. The former would be cool, the latter... not so much.
