CES '08: 360 could do an 180 on Blu-ray

[UPDATE] Microsoft exec tells Reuters that if customers choose Sony's high-def disc format, the Xbox manufacturer might make an add-on for it.

At the Consumer Electronics Show two years ago, shortly after Microsoft announced the HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360, the company's then-Xbox marketing executive Peter Moore admitted that a future add-on that would play Blu-ray discs was not out of the question, if the need for one arose.

With Warner Bros. last week committing to produce Blu-ray movies exclusively, many industry watchers predicted that Sony's high-definition disc format--a prominent feature of the PlayStation 3--had scored a knockout punch on Toshiba's HD DVD. At this year's CES, Microsoft's Xbox group marketing manager Albert Penello told Reuters today that the Warner move wasn't the end of the format wars, but acknowledged that his company is still keeping its options open.

"It should be consumer choice; and if that's the way they vote, that's something we'll have to consider," Penello told the news service.

While Penello downplayed the potential impact of the Warner deal on Xbox 360 sales, he acknowledged that it wasn't something the HD DVD-backing Microsoft had wanted to see.

"You can't say it's not a bummer, not a setback, but I've seen this battle declared over so many times," Penello said, adding, "I want consumers to have a voice in this and I think there are a lot of consumers who bought HD DVD who are going to have a say in how this shakes out."

[UPDATE] While Microsoft may be keeping its options open, it is far from abandoning HD DVD outright. Speaking with GameSpot, the console maker reaffirmed that the HD DVD format is still its high-definition playback standard of choice, for the time being. "Microsoft currently has no plans at this time to consider Blu-ray as an option. We continue to believe that HD DVD is the best optical solution for consumers, since it's the only format today that delivers quality experiences at affordable prices."

emerald you're still confused man, you could go out and buy a copy of Crysis right now on a DVD and a copy that comes on several CD's and they would both look exactly the same. Understand that developers don't make extra special graphics for a game just because it gets installed off of a DVD instead of a stack of CD's That's all I got, it's been explained enough

emerald - No, what I said still stands. And what I said about my cat, is not only because shes here bugging me, but because I meant it literally. Some people just arent receptive to explanations about tech, they just kinda pop up the ? mark and move along, or, try to BS their way through (Such as most BestBuy sales people lol).

I have a friend who's a PS3 supporter who thinks that games are going to look better on Blu-Ray discs. It's really hard talking to him sometimes too.

Chicken - ... Think about this. When people jumped on Betamax, and VHS won, did they get refunds or trade-in programs? No. They lost their money, and then bought new players. Why would this be any different than any other failed standard that eventually gave way to another?

I knew nikefreak would stay just so he could take his grudge off for me. For the millionth time The graphics of the object is more important than the space, im just saying it helps a bit. Only because its unthinkable that space can actually change te graphics by a bit, doesnt mean it cant. AND for the last time Being zarcastic makes you look so nerdy. "I would have better luck trying to teach my cat how to play 360 than explaining tech to you" Those sometimes dry and cheesy american jokes eh?

Gotta question. Will the Blu-Ray player be free for those of us who DID buy the HD DVD add on? (or received it as a gift) Now that the add on will be useless, they should have some sort of trade in program.... Oh well, I thought the HD DVD had potential.

@ratradle i was going to ask him/her, what about if the game code was stored in solidstate lol @ FraserAlexander it would not suprise me to see both formats fail really as the general public dont seem to care they and seem quite content with upscaling dvd for hdtv as the press of transformers on dvd shows more that enough life left in this middle aged dog yet

So companies MS and Sony are starting to stop bitc#ing now, good to see two companies coming together to advance technology. Even if it is just disc storage!

Whatever, you win, go claim your Nobel for figuring out how to improve graphics technology by simply increasing storage space. Im out. agerm - Yeah, I think Im off to some Halo 3 to blow peoples up lol :)

@agernmemon: How would you know what playstation power is called? 2 i dont read bised mags or sites thank you. But more space allows for more textures and other graphics specific thngs to be added. And thats why psp games dont look as good as ps2 ones because they have less memory AND the psp graphics card isnt as good as the ps2s.@ ratradler: it wont work on hard drives just on cd becuase of more space to put graphics specific files into it. Im giving up for now, im off to watch anime in the end were all gamers. "why dont we be freinds, why cant we be freinds, why dont we be freinds" as the lethal weapon 4 ending goes. LOL. If only all us gamers used our smart reasoning for useful things lol.

Sorry, hit Submit too soon. Anyway, I'm sure PC games will eventually start showing up on Blu-ray and HD-DVD's but those formats won't have any effect on the quality of graphics either, again, just more storage space

I want to know if the millions and millions of non-gamers are buying anything HD or Bluray...I doubt they are except for people that need the latest and greatest (probably like a lot of us). Standard DVD's actually look pretty good on HD tv's...I'm on the fence...i don't want to replace all my dvd's w/ blu-ray or HD-dvd's yet it's not worth it.

@ dr yassam: i know that its graphics and quality of the cd that matter dont explain till you know what im gonna say. GOOD grahics card and a Higher cd resolution = bettr looking games, it's just like i said before its up to the developers to decide whether or not, to make them beter looking. Good graphics card but a Ok cd resolution equals Great looking games but only for the time being.

I'm not a scientist or anything but I don't believe the type of disc a PC game is delivered on has anything to do with the quality of the graphics. There are many PC games that you can get on several CD's or on a single DVD, and there are a few reasons for this. It's mainly to give consumers the choice because not everyone has a DVD player in their PC. From what I understand, for PC games specifically and not movies that come on DVD's, the reason they put PC games on DVD's is for the increased storage space they offer

@emerald101 Maybe I will buy a bigger and faster hard drive for my pc. Then my pc games will look better. Do you realize how absurt your comments are? Do you know anything about computers? All blu-ray does is allow for more storage and increased reading throughput. The cpu, gpu, and memory effect game performance.

take away????? 360 blu-ray players give profit to sony. I'm referring to Microsoft releasing a Blu-Ray player which profits Sony, and basically does nothing beneficial for Microsoft other than them being able to say "Well we have an attachment for Blu-Ray". It doesn't actually make them profit

It's about the storage capacity. Blu-ray is more = better. Too bad developers can't actually take advantage of it because the PS3 is too expensive to develop for so they can't recoup their high dev costs. PS3 got the media format right and screwed up their processing scheme.

@ agermemnon; U misunderstood me. It depends on the quality of the games and the graphics card. Present pc cards over take the ps3's one and that is why crysis looks better than any ps3 game so far. If crysis was blu-ray AND you had a excellent graphics card then crysis could look better than it does now. Good point i get what youre trying to say.

emerald - Sigh... DVD = video is encoded at 720x480 resolution (ie. the number of dots across and then up and down that make up a picture) HD-DVD/BluRay = video is encoded at 1920x1080 ... THAT is the reason movies look "so t3h much bettorz!" in HD. Now, the more DOTS that it takes to make up a picture, requires more data, which makes the VIDEO FILES larger depending on how many dots are in each frame, how many frames need to be displayed each second, etc. So, HD-DVD/BluRay media has more SPACE, which allows LONGER HD video to be stored on it, nothing magic, just more space. And yes, in a few years (more/less depending on the market) they could start putting some games on HD-DVD... But that would only be due to using fewer discs, and even then, thats assuming that computing power increases enough to need that much space to store the assets for the games code, of which neither the PS3, 360, or PC would. Its simply overkill for gaming or data uses, unless you are storing large amounts of otherwise uncompressable data (backups, video, already compressed text/code/etc.)... Oh well, I should give up... Go yodel :)

Movies look better because of the space, but games are dependant on the processing power of the CPU and GPU. By your arguement, the PS3 wasn't really needed, all Sony had to do was add Blu-ray to the PS2 and voila, next-gen graphics. ;) Now if you can understand why it wouldn't improve the graphics of the PS2, then you should be able to understand the point being made here about current consoles.

@ nike freak; good point but thats why some first party games on the ps3 look better than the 360 ones. Multiplatform developers are just being lazy and not actually changing anything or even making blu-ray games worser then dvd ones. And by the way ZARCAZAM is the lowest form of wit LOL.

You can now get blu ray drives for your pc. you cant use it for games, but hey one day they might start making hd-dvd pc games and blu-ray pcs games. ;D

emerald - It does matter. It matters a great deal. Games are code being run, code doesnt take very much space, textures do, but code itself doesnt. Its only the assets (textures, sounds, etc) that take up the space, and there is already enough space for all of that (unless you get lazy and dont use any compression, procedural code, etc. even with todays ability for 0% loss in speed, 0% loss in quality with up to 70% in size reduction). You werent looking towards the future, you heard a bunch of jargon you didnt understand and was "mystified" into believing it. Just like how a magician makes his audience believe he can do something "magical" when in reality it is nothing more than an illusion. Hopefully you can eventually understand the differences between code that is executed and tells the computer to draw line 1 here, display texture on this part of line 1, etc. And a movie that the software/device reads and simply plays back, in a linear form, there are no changes, nothing to compute (except in todays cases with HD-DVD and BluRay, and that stuff relies on the player to execute and display the CODE, while it also reads and plays the MOVIE file)... And will understand that movies/videos, when recorded, can be "encoded" into various forms, requiring various amounts of space for different qualities... There is a vast difference in the two, but I cant stand to try to explain it further to you, you should just stop arguing about things you know nothing about, talking about how you are "looking towards the future", when in reality you are staring at a crystal-ball wielding mystic, who tells you to ride a llama while drinking cows blood and to then yodel the Star Spangled Banner while dancing on your head for the best HD.

I would like to say that MS making a add-on for a blu-ray is allowed but it personally sad. Its like taking away mr T's "I pity for you" thats his catchphrase. Blu-ray is the ps3s advantage/catchphrase, why are you going to copy it? If my mate copied something important of mine i would look down at him and think of him as a saddo.

The only reason Blu-ray wins is that the studios only care about is DRM, which I understand Blu-ray has stricter controls. It means higher costs to consumers for hardware that guarantees studio's investments. BTW, SONY DRM schemes have been known to load spyware in the past. I won't be getting an add-on Blu-ray drive to my xbox360 anytime soon.

There is a difference between space allowing a file to be encoded at higher bit rates, with lossless (or better) sound codecs, and being played at a higher resolution there by requiring more space, than games of which are ran from code (not a linear recording). That is the difference. Code is EXECUTED, not PLAYED. EDIT - I would really hush, you are making yourself sound really, ... lacking in knowledge, on this subject. That is all to do with how fast code can be ran, polygons can be made/displayed/mapped/etc, not how much data can fit on a disc. There is a BIG difference in movies and games...
