CES '08: 360 could do an 180 on Blu-ray

[UPDATE] Microsoft exec tells Reuters that if customers choose Sony's high-def disc format, the Xbox manufacturer might make an add-on for it.

At the Consumer Electronics Show two years ago, shortly after Microsoft announced the HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360, the company's then-Xbox marketing executive Peter Moore admitted that a future add-on that would play Blu-ray discs was not out of the question, if the need for one arose.

With Warner Bros. last week committing to produce Blu-ray movies exclusively, many industry watchers predicted that Sony's high-definition disc format--a prominent feature of the PlayStation 3--had scored a knockout punch on Toshiba's HD DVD. At this year's CES, Microsoft's Xbox group marketing manager Albert Penello told Reuters today that the Warner move wasn't the end of the format wars, but acknowledged that his company is still keeping its options open.

"It should be consumer choice; and if that's the way they vote, that's something we'll have to consider," Penello told the news service.

While Penello downplayed the potential impact of the Warner deal on Xbox 360 sales, he acknowledged that it wasn't something the HD DVD-backing Microsoft had wanted to see.

"You can't say it's not a bummer, not a setback, but I've seen this battle declared over so many times," Penello said, adding, "I want consumers to have a voice in this and I think there are a lot of consumers who bought HD DVD who are going to have a say in how this shakes out."

[UPDATE] While Microsoft may be keeping its options open, it is far from abandoning HD DVD outright. Speaking with GameSpot, the console maker reaffirmed that the HD DVD format is still its high-definition playback standard of choice, for the time being. "Microsoft currently has no plans at this time to consider Blu-ray as an option. We continue to believe that HD DVD is the best optical solution for consumers, since it's the only format today that delivers quality experiences at affordable prices."

Does anyone not realize there is no news in this article? Gamespot took Penello's statement on HD DVD vs Blu Ray, used the old info from peter moore, and added the recent warner bros move to make a fanboy war article. Has no one else mentioned that penello said nothing about blu ray drive for the 360? "Considering" could mean not backing any HD format and going full digital, has anyone thought of that? seriously gamespot what are you doing

Since Vance brought up Beta, here's a pop quiz for all of you: Do you know why VHS won the last format war over Betamax?

Why are Sony fans even claiming ownage. If you want ownage, how about a Sony movie company supporting 360 Digital Distribution. I bought my system yo game, not watch mvies and I'm sorry, but I don't see a major change in quality to even warrent a Bluray purchase. How about a dual format add-on?

I don't care who wins as long as we end up with one format. I refuse to buy a high-def player with the chance of it becoming useless in the near-future.

I believe dis is more of a format thing, in the end if blu-ray becomes the standard for everyone, then microsoft has to adapt n like Ninjaogta wrote, that wud finish ps3 4 good cuz then all the space dilemma wud be solved.

"Ninjaogta They sure didn't forsee the failure of the PS3 very well though, now did they?" Lol, dude for one, the PS3 isnt a failure and sold just as well as the 360 did in it's first year. And second of all, if HDDVD loses, it wont be around anymore, whereas if the PS3 "loses" it's still going to be around. After all, the Xbox hung around when the PS2 was 100 million units ahead of, didnt it?

nikefreak... I dont know what point you're making there. Yes, HDDVD had been making gains, but not outselling BluRay. Yes, Stringer did say that it was a stalemate. Yes, Warner did throw there weight behind Blu Ray. No, the battle isnt over. I dont know why you called me out on all that, lol. I know all that stuff already.

Good but in my opinion watching a Blu-ray movie is not a big deal. it,s not what we expected from 360 when we bought it . and the 360 is better than ps3 no matter it has a blue-ray reader or not . it still got Xbox live and its marketplace and lots of HD movies . and beside that , 360 is a gaming console with better Graphics and better titles. DO YOU STILL WANT MORE ?!!!! last but not least most of the Game developers admit that DL -DVD (8.5 GB)is enough for current generation Games .yeh maybe the next xbox will needs a larger disc format for games but the current generation does not need that . as a proof the long waited title ALAN WAKE (which ps3 fans wont see)with a Huge environment and lots of interactive objects and characters will fit into a single DVD . the only usage of Blue-ray discs in the games is having better and larger textures and CGI and some Extra stuff and obviously lack of these things is not an important Goddam thing.

carljohnson - And in case YOU didnt notice, HD-DVD had been making gains towards BluRays numbers, even Sonys CEO said it was a stalemate just over a month ago (I think was Howard Stringer?)... Thats when Warner stepped in, and in one article it spoke of (Cant remember, will try to look for it) how Warner basically demonstrated that they wanted HD movie sales to go up, so it was time to throw their weight behind whichever platform would make them the most money, and for a few reasons - that would be BluRay. That doesnt mean however that the battle is over, and depending on Microsofts stance, (Judging from the update about how they are not abandoning it), it could turn back around, especially if they flash some cash ;p In one respect I do hope for an end to the war, but on the other hand, I still would prefer HD-DVD to win for the reasons I have said..

The 360 is already kicking the PS3's ass, but if the 360 got a Blu-Ray player, it would be the end of the PS3. All the PS3 has is its Blu-Ray player. With no decent games, it would be over for the PS3.

carljohnson3456 Unless there is some real technological advancements in high speed internet that is affordable in the next couple years, you can bet that nobody is going to wait for hours on end to download a 50 GB game. Discs are going to be around alot longer than people think. Not to mention for all those people who dont hook their consoles up, or have high speed internet You missed the point. Nobody is talking about Video Games (as you pointed out in your comment). This is about MOVIES. Paramount / WB & other Film studios are not making Video Games. If you have an HD TV, you can already download HD movies (and it only takes me 5 minutes tops.). hence I said, "DVD's...as far as movies are concerned will be obsolete." No reason to go to Blockbuster or whatever, when you can just click on your 360/PS3, On Demand or there marketplace and get your hi def film.

"marcryan71 I'm bummed because this format war is being BOUGHT...not "won" by anyone. And f-you to studios for deciding for the consumer, rather than producing both formats (which IS making them money) and let US decide. NOT YOU. I'm really bummed because this whole Blu-ray is a MADE UP FORMAT...not an evolution of DVD which people have been loving for 15 years. Sony is investing millions to buy the war now, so they can OWN the format for the next ten years. Blu-ray is still trying to catch up to HD-DVD with features and responsiveness. I don't own a PS3 and even when I get one, I WON'T be buying movies any time soon. I'm usually not a Microsoft "we rule everything" advocate, but in this case, I love HD-DVD and I love the features it plays smoothly and quickly. -- If the format war is "over" then the consumers are NOT the winners here...Sony is." You're right, let US decided who wins. In case you havent noticed, Blu Ray as been outselling HDDVD man. That is "us" deciding as you said. Besides, the HDDVD camp is the one who paid for victory in this format war, $150 million to Paramount for exclusivity. You contradicted yourself that entire post.

@dolfan928 A game company doesn't go out of business when its console sells 17,000,000 units in two years. With the Dreamcast, purchase literally stopped overnight as soon as the PS2 arrived. In the current gen, when the PS3 arrived, it didn't affect 360 sales at all, not one bit whatsoever. You really want me to bring up the horrid eBay profit returns on the PS3 during holiday 2006? The "We Have PS3s" signs on store doors? Being able to walk into stores without reservations and still find PS3? Sony (and people like you) thinks this is still last generation. Times have changed. Sony didn't open up with a BANG like everyone hoped. It was more like a whimper.

Ok, I'm gonna attempt to dig you out of this hole emerald, I'm not your enemy here (even after you insulted my entire country =) I have a PS3, a 360, a Wii and a PC. I don't hate my PS3 at all, I love my PS3, there aren't a ton of games for it just now but, it's day is coming. I think the confusion is specifically coming from the difference between Blu-ray movies and PC games that will probably be delived on Blu-ray discs. First, Blu-ray movies do look much better than DVD movies, no one is denying that. PC games can be delivered to us in many ways, either on a disc (of varying types, CD's, DVD's and eventually Blu-ray and HD-DVD's) that you can buy at the store or you can download directly from the developer, like through Steam or EA's download service for example. Regardless of how you purchase a PC game, the files that are installed on your PC are identical. That's true now and it will still be true when PC games arrive on Blu-ray and HD-DVD. What these guys are saying is true, the only benefit of using Blu-ray discs FOR PC GAMES, is storage space. The benefit FOR MOVIES is higher visual quality, you need to make that distinction. I was a video game developer for a couple years and I currently work in IT, so I hope you at least give my posts some credit. I'm trying to help you understand how this all actually works so I hope this helps

I see a lot of people upset because they backed the wrong horse. That's how the early adoption gamble works, folks - them's the breaks. Stop bashing on emerald/PS3/HD disc format/whatever. Find something better to do than hate. And Yuck_Too, all I ever see you posting is hate hate hate. I know you own multiple systems - that doesn't give you blanket permission to hate. Geez. "Faith in the younger generation." How old is the person to whom you're referring? Do you have any idea?

First of all developers aren't going to put thier games on BlueRay Discs any time soon. Second of all with the current state of technology it won't be hard for MS to incorporate a BD drive into the 360. Now one major aspect of BD drives no one is talking about is the fact that Sony is loosing alot on the PS3s due to the cost of Blue Ray. By making a BD drive optional or an "add-on" Microsoft is limiting losses not only financially but also in terms of sales figures (Incorporating an internal Blueray drive will drive up production costs and production time). Lets be honest, right now how many 360 owners want a blue ray drive?

dolfan928, you cant compare a system that has a DOMINANT interenet gaming system, a system that has been out for over two years and a system that has sold close to or more then 10 million units to the sega dreamcast. Blu ray isnt going to shut down the 360, the nintendo 64 didnt run on cds and the playstation didnt shut it down. Blu-ray can hold 50 gig...developers dont want to work that hard to fill it up and they cant even fill up a DVD yet!

To all the people who are talking about graphic comparisons. The point of the choice of Blu-ray over HD-DVD is the choice of a more popular format. To all the fanboys, you are free to check my ID and see that I am a Sony fan but right now we are not in a stage where the games we can compare will have a great difference. Look at it from a business point of view, you can produce one game with one team for many different systems. All you have to do is change things slightly at the end. Or, have one team for each system and drive your development price though the roof. Then we pay for the difference then. No exclusive titles means the same generic games across all systems. As well, when has Microsoft had an original thought that was their own. Vista tried to do what Apple has done and internet explorer has tried to do what Mozilla has done. Why wouldn't the Microsoft train of thought reign in their game studio as well?? Just a thought. Please if you want.

emerald - The problem is, its not hate about a system. You are equating it to a system, because you are basing your knowledge off Sony PR. Of course they are trying to make it sound like BluRay will make your games better, ::BECAUSE THEY PUT IT IN A GAME SYSTEM::. They need to try to justify to people why they are buying a new HD movie player along with their game system, and thats how they chose to do it. As far as what we are trying to tell you, it isnt opinion, it isnt fanboyism, its simple cold hard fact. The sooner you realize that, the better... But whatever floats your boat, I have told you, we have tried explaining the facts of the matter to you, but you refuse to listen or try to understand.

Right now I'm more concerned about whether the ps3's bluray drive can even stream data quick enough to make it worthwhile for gaming. What use is a bluray drive if you have to install 20gig on your HD before you can use it? I couldnt care less if the xbox has a bluray drive or not, very few games will ever require more than a dual layer dvd and those that do will have copious amounts of uncompressed fmv - a ploy so they can *claim* the game requires more than a dvd capacity? You tell me :)

wow...I have little faith left in the younger generation after reading some of these comments. Simple fact is this. A storage medium (floppy, removable, fixed, you name it) makes ZERO difference. What makes a difference is transfer speeds, bottlenecks, processing power, etc...but the bits and bytes are just that regardless of what they are physically written on.

"Add on" are the key words here. The 360 still won't be able to run games on Blu-Ray, and when developers start to concentrate on THIS generation's technology(BD-ROMs on the PS3), not the last one's(DVDs on the 360), the 360 is finished. The prices are so comparable now and you get much more for your money with PS3. This same thing happened to Dreamcast. It had a year head start too, but it ran on CDs if I'm not mistaken, and the PS2 came out as an affordable DVD player with great games and drove SEGA right out of the console market. Let's hope the same happens to MS!

I give up totally hands down its me versus 100000 just like it is when you try to justify that religion doesnt exist. I can predict that you either own a pc or a 360 or a pc a 360 and a ps3, but you just dont prefer youre ps3. And thats why you hate so much. Why hate? i never commented back on anyone in my first post, why comment on me just becuase i have a different view of things. Insecure people these days have way too many issues. Are you actually trying to say that i cant spell sarcastic. Who is actually bothered to proper spell perfectly on a blog which you have to be typing regularaly on becuase people are commenting back on you. Im not getting anything for spelling anything anyway. Just an opinion by an already problemed guy which has his own probems aswell. Lol i know for a fact that i can spell better than you. Maybe its because you might be american. We spell a few things different over here, not sarcastic though.

I was oping HD DVD would win, its cheaper to manufacture and holds more than enough data for current applications. I fear BR disks won't come down in price as fast as HD would have, so don't hold your breath for 15-20$ BR movies. As for the 360 add-on, why? I want to download my movies just like a do my music, why another disc format when were obviously going towards digital? Discs are over people, lets work on cheaper high speed internet and bigger HD's.

It's good to see that this might become an option for those few of us who actually care about Blu-Ray right now and only have (or want) a 360. However, it won't matter a damn bit as far as the games go. Sony will just bank off the fact that they will have the better storage available for movies.

So you are the god all mighty know it all about tech and can judge whther u know more than people. I understand i use to have 360, People fight for the side they either most prefer or only have ( a ps3 360 or wii) everyone tries to justify what they spent there money on.
