Don't Expect Hyrule Warriors to Fill That Zelda Void

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Too much Warriors, not enough Hyrule.

Dynasty Warriors is the antithesis of so much of what I love about The Legend of Zelda. Exploration and puzzle solving are nowhere to be found in that historical hack-and-slasher, nor is there that unbridled sense of discovery that propels me ever onward. Those elements that draw me to so many of Link's adventures are replaced by destructive combat in which hundreds fall to your spinning blades, empowering you in the ways of slaughter like few other games can replicate. Nuance has been replaced with bludgeoning, and though I don't shun those who are drawn to such exploits, I've stayed clear of the franchise since its inception. Hyrule Warriors exists as an uneasy union between these two franchises. The brief demonstration I played was blandly enjoyable, though doesn't offer much for those who want to wield the master sword again.

Hyrule Warriors is the first entry I've played in the Warriors franchise, but even though I was a novice at the chaotic exploits, I was massacring the scared inhabitants without any hesitation. It was incredibly easy to lay waste to all who stood before me. Hundreds of moblins crowded the screen, though they were less vicious than even one such enemy from The Legend of Zelda. I never noticed if they were even trying to mount an attack or were all too happy to fall to my blade, and as I plowed through entire families in one deadly swoop, I could understand why others are so drawn to this franchise. Embodying someone so strong fulfills a power fantasy. You see an entire field overflowing with enemies, and you just slice right through them without any resistance. I felt like an action hero to whom normal rules don't apply. I'm going to force my will on everyone, and if you don't like it, you can have a sword in your face for your troubles.

Killing hundreds or even thousands of poor moblins might be fun to some, but I struggled to care. I wasn't bored as I carved through the masses, but I wasn't particularly engaged, either. I enjoy more nuance in my combat, something thoughtful and skill-based that poses enough challenge to make sure my focus never wanes. The only thing I needed to consider in Hyrule Warriors was which combo I wanted to unleash. There are two attack buttons, and depending on the order in which you hit them, you do different moves. But even though visual flourishes accompanied each action, the results were the same; I was lulled by the predictability as the tapping rhythm overtook me.

Hyrule Warriors exists as an uneasy union between these two franchises.

Objectives occasionally rush onscreen detailing specific tasks you must accomplish. Here was a chance to turn the mundane combat into something special, but these also lacked imagination. Parts of the map would flash, and I would sprint toward the area to help a recognizable friend survive enemy attacks or take over a stronghold from opposing forces. Once I arrived at the scene, I still tapped out combos without much thought, and the bad guys quickly perished to let me proceed unscathed. My attention never completely dissipated because of the various shout-outs to the beloved Zelda series. I saved a goron from danger and plucked bombs from a treasure chest. The musical cues were pulled straight from The Legend of Zelda, and even the art style would fit right in with one of Link's adventures. There are enough nods to what I love that I would occasionally smile, because any excuse to be a part of that world is good enough for me.

No Caption Provided

It was during a boss fight that things became slightly more interesting. If you're a fan of Zelda, and you saw that I picked up bombs in this stage, you can probably guess what boss burst on the scene. That's right: it was Dodongo. It's gigantic in Hyrule Warriors, much bigger than it appears in other games, though its weakness remains the same. After shooting out streams of fire, it would inhale deeply, and then I would just have to toss a bomb in its mouth. This momentarily stunned it, opening the door for more senseless slashing as I stripped away its health. The fight was the first time I had to move defensively, and it was a nice change of pace being presented with a foe who required more than frantic mashing to defeat.

As someone who adores The Legend of Zelda, there just isn't much here for me to latch on to. Yes, I'm as weak as anyone to the aesthetic charms of the franchise, but that's the only part of Zelda that has made the transition. The rest is pure Dynasty Warriors. I thought the game was fun enough, and was impressed by how I could kill so many enemies with so little effort. But I need more than window dressing to make me care about a game. For those who are in my position, eager for a new Zelda and hopeful Hyrule Warriors will fill that role, keep your expectations very low. None of the inherent appeal of Zelda is present here, so you need to care an awful lot about the characters and music to remain interested. If you already enjoy the Warriors series, Hyrule Warriors won't spoil what draws you to it. At least from what I've seen, It sadly doesn't reach an interesting balance that could have expanded the audience to include those who love The Legend of Zelda, too.

Great. This "feature" without a doubt will produce more negativity towards the Wii U (and Nintendo by default) from Tom McShea (and Gamespot by default), and this is even well before the official game is released. This is not a review, but that's exactly what it reads like. You should be ashamed of yourself, Mr. McShea. This "feature" shouldn't even exist the way it is presented at all. I'm all for giving people a heads up about what a game is like before release, but this is not quite that, and is shameful.

This game is not an official Zelda game in the traditional Legend of Zelda sense. It is a hybrid of two franchises, Dynasty Warriors and Zelda, using gameplay from the Dynasty Warriors games and characters from the Zelda universe. I think everyone understands that. They should, anyway. If they don't, in this age of internet information, it is quite simple to determine what kind of game Hyrule Warriors is before release simply by looking it up. This "feature" trashes pretty hard on the game before it's even officially finished, and this coming from a person who not only isn't a Dynasty Warriors fan, but one who hasn't played any of the other games. I don't think anyone actually expected this game to play like Zelda. Again, they shouldn't have if they know anything about Dynasty Warriors. Even the name of the game leads one to believe it's more about Dynasty Warriors than Zelda.

This article has "fail" written all over it, and I'm certainly not talking about the game itself. I for one will wait until the game is actually released and look at a spread of real reviews, many of which will be reviewed by someone who will give the game the proper respect it deserves.

A hybrid would take elements from both to form something that has elements of both but resembles neither. This is a reskin being marketed as a hybrid, hence the problem Mr. McShea has with it.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's valuable knowledge though. There's going to be thousands of dumb gamers who buy it because it says Zelda on the front then be baffled when they get Dynasty Warriors. Maybe this informs a few of them before they waste their money.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Not trying to nitpick here, but it doesn't say Zelda on the front. Just Hyrule Warriors. I see your point, but it's very likely those dummies are going to stay dumb and not do proper research, anyway, so that target audience will never even read this article or anything like it. My main issue with the article is how it feels and reads like a review, not a preview, and is based on little gameplay with two months to go before release.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> There are also lots of people who claim to hate Dynasty Warriors, but it turns out they've never actually played one, and are only going off what they've heard from people like Tom here, who it turns out had never played one before now either! Yet somehow he just ~knew~ he didn't like them.

This is a very weird sort of thing that happens with a few franchises/types of games, but Warriors games definitely get it more than most,

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Thanks. I'm glad someone agrees with me. It's just that I am getting increasingly frustrated with Tom's Freatures, Editorials, and Reviews (and Preview Reviews now, I guess). I like coming to this website for its News section (it's the main reason I come here, and unfortunately I haven't found a better news section on another gaming website), but all too often these days I get annoyed with Gamespot and the people who work there.

@FLEEBS What are you ranting on about? This article serves its intended purpose as mentioned in the title. Its just a heads up for those not yet aware that this HW game will not fill the void fans of Zelda-type gameplay crave. Its just a heads up. And someone whos never played a warriors game/ is not a fan but still a fan of zelda is the the perfect fit to write this article as the opinion of such a person serves this articles intended audience so I dont see why this article is a"fail" for whatever reason

@yemsols I feel I clearly stated my reasons above. But to add to what I said, I certainly don't think it's just a "heads up", as you say. For one thing, the way McShea states his opinions about Hyrule Warriors feels like he's commenting on a finished product, and I don't think that's at all fair to a game that has not only been released yet, but is two months away from release date.

You may not agree with me, but there are obviously people who do.

<< LINK REMOVED >> He's right to take that approach because the finished product wount be too different from the demo he played gameplay wise. Its only 2 months away so there isnt anything major that can be changed within that time. If you watched the e3 nintendo house showing you would also know that this is true. The speaker there mentioned that the only differences in the demo from the final is some additional aesthetics, difficulty options and more side missions in a stage. No change that would add or take away from Tom's point in this article and his point in the article is clear and correct. The point is "those who seek zelda type gameplay wount find it here. What they will find is a dynasty warriors game with some zelda elements thrown in and homage paid to various zelda games" That pretty much sums up his point and he just adds bits from his hands on experience. Even Eiji Aonuma said pretty much the same thing i.e he told the producers to make a dynasty warriors game and not try too hard to make a zelda game since nintendo is already doing that. So I dont see how Tom has trashed the game and written a fail article here.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> It would certainly add or take away when Tom has only played the beginning part of the game. He hasn't played the full game, so how can one fully judge a game based on the first level, or whatever small amount he played for this supposed preview? I fully realize that not tons of things can happen in development in a two month span (even if various development tweaks can make a game better), but that's not why I was referring to that timeframe. I was referring to it because, again, this "preview" feels more like a review than a preview, and it is far too early for not only a review, but a final judgement (or damn near close to one) for a game that is two months away from release date. It is entirely unfair and silly to do so. I guarantee there are people who will read this and think it is an actual review (even if it seems silly, but people are people).

My other point is no one should be expecting "Zelda type gameplay" as you say, but I already expounded on that above.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> He didnt fully judge the game, he judged what he played and what he played can be expected in the full game as it was a demo of what the full game would entail. And yes you can consider it a review if you want but its a review of whatever short amount of the game he played that is available before its final release. He's not reviewing a full game which he admits to at the end of the article when he states "At least from what I've seen". And if those "people" read the article properly without any negative bias towards tom, they would see that.

And you say no one should be expecting zelda type gameplay but the creators obviously tried to include zelda type gameplay with boss battles and such since they realize this game is also trying to appeal to zelda fans who might not be fans of the warriors series. They've clearly tried to include some level of zelda gameplay in the game and Tom's article is saying from what he's played so far, we shouldnt expect the final product to fill that zelda void for zelda type gameplay we may have despite the zelda things they have tried to include in the game. So I still dont see how your first comment can be attacking this as a fail article.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Nope. I never said I thought it was a review, but that McShea really closely presented it as one, and I think that's a problem.

Last thing I'm going to say is I'm a huge Zelda fan, but I think this game looks cool, and when I read about what they were creating with this game, I certainly didn't (and don't) expect Zelda gameplay at all from this game. If anyone had half a brain, and they researched this game even a little, they wouldn't, either. What I do expect is to bash tons of Zelda baddies with awesome Zelda characters (many of which have never been playable before, even if it is in the fighting style of Dynasty Warriors), feeling like a badass in the process, and maybe killing a Zelda boss or two before it's all said and done. That in no way sounds like a Zelda game, and that's what you can gather by watching any trailer for this game (or reading anything about it. I think it's ludicrous to expect Zelda gameplay if you even knew the first thing about this game prior ro launch.

And, dude, it's totally fine for us to disagree. I've said my piece, and I'm done here.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> And Im saying there isnt a problem with it being closely presented as a review because it is in fact a review of his hands on experience.

Also if anyone had half a brain, and they researched this game even a little they, they would know that they can expect some level of zelda gameplay from this game as the developers have stated that they aim to satisfy fans from both games. Like stated in the article, there is zelda gameplay incorporated in how you defeat the Dodongo so its there. But Tom believes there wount be enough of that kind of stuff in the final to fill our Zelda void. Yes other aspects dont sound like a Zelda game or maybe trailers dont give that impression, but its because its marketed as a hybrid of both game not just a Zelda game (and not just a Musou game either). So its not ludicrous to expect Zelda gameplay since even the developers say you can expect some level of it.

And yeah its fine for us to disagree since thats what we've been doing since my first reply to your comment.

Wow so many annoying comments to read. In the end I just hope reviewers can understand this; there are different genres in gaming and fans for each genre so when reviewing a game, scores should include whether or not it will be an awesome addition to fans of the genre and then maybe (or preferably maybe not) western perception/reveiwers perception/other genre of gamers perception/rest of the world etc. If I were to do a review of shooters like call of duty the way gamespot does reviews on the warriors series, it would go something like this "another repetitive shooter that brings nothing exceptionally new to the franchise. AI follows the same routine of those already familiar with shooters." This may be my honest opinion but its because Im not a fan of the genre so updates, new additions to the game, differences that separate it from others in the same genre are all miniscule and wouldnt matter much to me. A lot of times reviewers think they are taking a more objective/professional view on the game and not realize they are just being douchbags to fans of the genre who enjoy the game for what it is. The "dull" AI and repetitiveness might to be a draw for many fans yet is usually cited as the negative side of the game. Reviews for such things should be like this article where you say its a welcome addition to fans of the warriors series but for those looking for "such and such" gameplay this is not for you, look elsewhere. That way you can give the game a score relevant to its criteria. And this is not a bayonetta/dmc type hack and slash, this is more of a mindless fun type of hack and slash so its review should be based and relevant to stuff within its genre/criteria.

Enemy AI looks to be almost non-existent. It will get boring to play very quickly if that's the case. As much as I would love to play as Princess Zelda, there are far better games to spend my money on.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That's the majority of Dynasty warriors AI are, the regular soldiers run to you and try to attack and they don't block which leaves you plenty of time to attack. The generals however, are smarter and will block, meaning you have to plan your attacks accordingly. Then you have the "boss" and he/she is just as strong as you in fighting capability. That being said, usually DW has difficulty settings(standard Easy, Normal, Hard), so yeah.

It should be better than your normal Zelda game... less focus on puzzles and more waifus and fighting. Its the most hyped Zelda game yet for me.

Ughh. I know...let's have someone who has never played DW before review this game. While we are at it, let's play just an opening salvo and determine that the game never progresses in difficulty, complexity. Great choice to preview this now. This is no way adds to the perception that GameSpot is anti Nintendo

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well, the reviews are great in Japan, and they are some of the top selling games over there too. It makes sense to go to new franchises too, like One Piece Pirate Warriors was the best selling console title of 2012 in Japan. Its just a series that the West doesn't "get".

<< LINK REMOVED >> I respectfully disagree. This game may have the same type of gameplay, but the animations, environments, maps, characters, bosses, weapons, RPG elements, and more all have to be programmed and developed from the Dynasty Warriors "engine." This would be too hard to make as a DLC.

This game seems to cater more to those who grew up and love the Dynasty Warriors series. I myself grew up with all the Zelda titles, and fell in love with Dynasty Warriors 3 (and continued on).

Tom's article is more informational as a cautionary tale of warning to those who prefer the Zelda franchise. I personally will love this game, because I love both franchises.

Thank you for laying down the facts Tom, I respect the article, and your opinions based off the factual experience that is Hyrule Warriors
