Don't Expect Hyrule Warriors to Fill That Zelda Void

Too much Warriors, not enough Hyrule.

Dynasty Warriors is the antithesis of so much of what I love about The Legend of Zelda. Exploration and puzzle solving are nowhere to be found in that historical hack-and-slasher, nor is there that unbridled sense of discovery that propels me ever onward. Those elements that draw me to so many of Link's adventures are replaced by destructive combat in which hundreds fall to your spinning blades, empowering you in the ways of slaughter like few other games can replicate. Nuance has been replaced with bludgeoning, and though I don't shun those who are drawn to such exploits, I've stayed clear of the franchise since its inception. Hyrule Warriors exists as an uneasy union between these two franchises. The brief demonstration I played was blandly enjoyable, though doesn't offer much for those who want to wield the master sword again.

Hyrule Warriors is the first entry I've played in the Warriors franchise, but even though I was a novice at the chaotic exploits, I was massacring the scared inhabitants without any hesitation. It was incredibly easy to lay waste to all who stood before me. Hundreds of moblins crowded the screen, though they were less vicious than even one such enemy from The Legend of Zelda. I never noticed if they were even trying to mount an attack or were all too happy to fall to my blade, and as I plowed through entire families in one deadly swoop, I could understand why others are so drawn to this franchise. Embodying someone so strong fulfills a power fantasy. You see an entire field overflowing with enemies, and you just slice right through them without any resistance. I felt like an action hero to whom normal rules don't apply. I'm going to force my will on everyone, and if you don't like it, you can have a sword in your face for your troubles.

Killing hundreds or even thousands of poor moblins might be fun to some, but I struggled to care. I wasn't bored as I carved through the masses, but I wasn't particularly engaged, either. I enjoy more nuance in my combat, something thoughtful and skill-based that poses enough challenge to make sure my focus never wanes. The only thing I needed to consider in Hyrule Warriors was which combo I wanted to unleash. There are two attack buttons, and depending on the order in which you hit them, you do different moves. But even though visual flourishes accompanied each action, the results were the same; I was lulled by the predictability as the tapping rhythm overtook me.

Hyrule Warriors exists as an uneasy union between these two franchises.

Objectives occasionally rush onscreen detailing specific tasks you must accomplish. Here was a chance to turn the mundane combat into something special, but these also lacked imagination. Parts of the map would flash, and I would sprint toward the area to help a recognizable friend survive enemy attacks or take over a stronghold from opposing forces. Once I arrived at the scene, I still tapped out combos without much thought, and the bad guys quickly perished to let me proceed unscathed. My attention never completely dissipated because of the various shout-outs to the beloved Zelda series. I saved a goron from danger and plucked bombs from a treasure chest. The musical cues were pulled straight from The Legend of Zelda, and even the art style would fit right in with one of Link's adventures. There are enough nods to what I love that I would occasionally smile, because any excuse to be a part of that world is good enough for me.

No Caption Provided

It was during a boss fight that things became slightly more interesting. If you're a fan of Zelda, and you saw that I picked up bombs in this stage, you can probably guess what boss burst on the scene. That's right: it was Dodongo. It's gigantic in Hyrule Warriors, much bigger than it appears in other games, though its weakness remains the same. After shooting out streams of fire, it would inhale deeply, and then I would just have to toss a bomb in its mouth. This momentarily stunned it, opening the door for more senseless slashing as I stripped away its health. The fight was the first time I had to move defensively, and it was a nice change of pace being presented with a foe who required more than frantic mashing to defeat.

As someone who adores The Legend of Zelda, there just isn't much here for me to latch on to. Yes, I'm as weak as anyone to the aesthetic charms of the franchise, but that's the only part of Zelda that has made the transition. The rest is pure Dynasty Warriors. I thought the game was fun enough, and was impressed by how I could kill so many enemies with so little effort. But I need more than window dressing to make me care about a game. For those who are in my position, eager for a new Zelda and hopeful Hyrule Warriors will fill that role, keep your expectations very low. None of the inherent appeal of Zelda is present here, so you need to care an awful lot about the characters and music to remain interested. If you already enjoy the Warriors series, Hyrule Warriors won't spoil what draws you to it. At least from what I've seen, It sadly doesn't reach an interesting balance that could have expanded the audience to include those who love The Legend of Zelda, too.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> This is biased because he went into it expecting a "Zelda" game. Read his wording and it's obvious. It's like going and playing super smash brothers and getting ticked that it doesn't play like a Zelda game because it has characters from Zelda in it. It's insane to the point I want to think he was paid to write a review like this. He should have opened with "I really wanted a zelda game, so this might be a compilation of heavily biased thoughts".

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> expecting some zelda elements in what is a hybrid between zelda and some other game isnt being biased. And the article is written the way it is to inform those who are still clueless or hopeful of that situation you mentioned, i.e they expect a zelda game. This is merely an article to inform you that it is not a "zelda" game in that sense. This article serves that intended purpose so I dont see where the idea of him being bias comes in

<< LINK REMOVED >> The bias is ALL in there in the article, starting with the title.

You are like those pseudo critics that think they know what they are talking about and just because know how to write a wall of text with pseudo "facts" they think they are writing the truth; like those that they criticize movies saying a Transformers like movie is not a great movie because it does not have a great story... they SHOULD know that THAT kind of movie is for the viewing pleasure of badass robots, with lots of explosions and gorgeous babes. If I want to see and "ART"movie I would not target Transformers...

The same applies to your "article". If I want a Zelda experience I'm sure I'll look forward the new announced Zelda for Wii U this E3 and not a game called "Hyrule Warriors" yeah, read it again please, IT IS "Hyrule Warriors" and not "The Legend of Zelda" you biased dummy.

@SoNinCroft @TomMcShea Oh gosh please chill out with the personal insults man its not that serious. The dude simply voiced his opinion on a video game and now he's a biased dummy. That escalated too quickly and is just unwaranted. Im sure you can get your point across just fine without resorting to insults

<< LINK REMOVED >> What I said were fine words. Believe me. And what about you? I've seen lots and lots of your replies on many many comments with this article, what are you? a Tom's Little Helper? Much free time, right?

And it is obvious that if there is a lot of disliking comments about the article it is because the majority of the people understands WHAT Hyrule Warriors is and how BAD it is "reviewed" (yeah, what this biased dummy did was a review of an unfinished product of a small part of the game and, like someone said in another post about Tom: "Well it is curious that you just knew you disliked Dynasty Warriors games, despite this being the very first one you have ever actually played." that is why the WHOLE article is pure bias).

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> yeah presently Im guilty of "much free time" which is why I bother writing all these comments. Would probably last throughout this weekend at the very least.

And from what Ive perceived in this free time of mine (maybe incorrectly but its my current perception anyway), there is a lot of bad negativity about the article not because there is anything wrong with the article but because some people have an issue with the writer. So I believe the lots of negative comments that you mention stem from that.

Reviewing an unfinished product doesnt mean he's a biased dummy. Thats like calling someone whos reviewing the occulus rifts dev kit a biased dummy. It hardly warrants him such a title.

He knew he disliked Dynasty Warriors games because he disliked the core concept behind dynasty warriors games. There is nothing wrong with that. You should be able to able to understand such a situation. Heres an example, I dislike ghost stories so I dont like Fatal Frame despite never having played it. Now my opinion might change upon playing it, or it could remain the same. So like this "review", I would want someone like me (dislike ghost stories & never played fatal frame or ghost story game) to play the game demo and write his opinion. That is what this article is.

I'm really looking forward to the reviews of this game. Dynasty Warriors has been pathetically bashed over and over by the games media for years. But now there's a high score guaranteed franchise attached to it.

Will the reviewers inexplicably fail to mention the same complaints they always do about Dynasty Warriors and hypocritically give it high scores, or give it a 6 and face the hordes of dumb fanboys?

Tom, if you were expecting more than a dynsasty warriors game with a coat of paint of zelda I truly doubt your intelligence. From the start they said this is more a dynasty warriors game than a Zelda, please dont review it Tom since I know you wont be able to separate a true LoZ with this game.

You miss the entire point of the game just like every game reviewer on the internet. It's suppose to be mindless, and if it's too easy you turn the difficulty up for mindless difficulty. Warriors games are not trying to be Metal Gear: Revengeance. Yet every reviewer holds it up to some standard that is not the aim of the Warriors series. It's a niche, you either enjoy it for what it is, or you don't.

Plus this game was not advertised as anything BUT a Warriors game.

This article certainly goes along with my fears.

However, as Tom mentions, there are some great nods for fans. I certainly find a draw when I see screenshots of Girahim, Fi, Midna, and Zant, or various locations I never thought would be revisited (such as the Twilight Realm).

I don't know -- there's a chance I may spring for this,. The gameplay really does look mundane but maybe playing co-op (which uses the gamepad, instead of split screen) and being with a friend will make it more enjoyable?

I thought Nintendo had been describing this game as a full on Warriors game, just with the Zelda theme thrown in. Were they not? All the gameplay vids have backed that notion up. Why was anyone thinking otherwise? I'm personally not that excited for this game because I'm not a huge fan of Dynasty Warriors.

Never understood why this game is so hyped. It looks like just another mediocre Warriors game. It will be fun at first but get repetitive quick. I think it's because most of the Zelda fans have never seen a Warriors game before.

I'm looking forward to it. Its not going to be Tom McShea's cup of tea. But it will do 2 things. It will show that a third party can do a game with Zelda characters and not make it a complete disaster, and it will fulfill a need for a action game isn't dominant on the Wii U.

I just don't get the excitement for this game. I have only owned Dynasty Warriors 2(i did finish it... But don't know why) but played a couple of newer ones. But when you have played one you have played them all. I have never seen a Dynasty Warriors game get so much coverage, and not even the Zelda Licence should change that.

I guess if you haven't played one or a fan of the series it might be interesting? But if hate repetition, this is definitely not for you.

<< LINK REMOVED >> My guess is that it's the same reason Bayonetta 2 is getting so much hype - it's an exclusive for a system that has a relative scarcity of games. Now, Bayonetta 2 could end up being really good, or a disaster of DMC2 proportions. This game though, I could see right away that it was just Dynasty Warriors with Link in it. I played DW2-4 back in the day and don't care to play any more of them.

This isn't supposed to be like Zelda in the slightest. It's Dynasty Warriors with Zelda characters.
If you're looking for the Zelda gameplay that you know and love, then this is obviously not for you. On that basis, it's sort of unfair to say the game isn't that great because it's more Dynasty Warriors than Zelda, especially when you've never played a Dynasty Warriors game before now.

Not really sure how to react to this - I would never have expected a "Zelda" experience from this game. It always seemed clear to me that this was meant as a Dynasty Warriors game set in the Zelda universe. Which, if you like Dynasty Warriors, seems like an awesome thing. So - sure, it won't be for everyone. Not sure it's meant to be.

Yeah I don't expect that at all. I barely even expect Zelda games to fill that Zelda craving anymore. Now I play the Darksiders series because that's essentially Zelda for grown ups. I can only play so many games in a series where the main character only grunts.

Great read Tom. Yea this is just a fun side thing it seems.

I know what I'm getting and I'm still gonna play it. At it's core it's a Dynasty Warriors game, nothing more, nothing less. We've all seen the gameplay and I like it since I have not played a DW game before.

Now if Nintendo were trying to screw me by overhyping it as a revolution for the franchise and hiding gameplay behind fraudulent trailers and then gave me a hack and slash Dynasty Warriors game it didn't promote then I would have a problem.

But they promoted a DW game and I'm gonna give it a shot.
