EA cuts more jobs

Battlefield, FIFA publisher confirms staff reductions, but won't specify number of teams affected.

Electronic Arts cuts more jobs today as part of a "hard but essential" process, according to a statement from the Battlefield and FIFA publisher posted on the company's blog.

No Caption Provided

"In recent weeks, EA has aligned all elements of its organizational structure behind priorities in new technologies and mobile. This has led to some difficult decisions to reduce the workforce in some locations," an EA representative said. "We are extremely grateful for the contributions made by each of our employees--those that are leaving EA will be missed by their colleagues and friends.

"These are hard but essential changes as we focus on delivering great games and showing players around the world why to spend their time with us," the statement goes on.

EA declined to say which teams were impacted or how many jobs were cut overall. However, multiple sources have told Kotaku that the staff reduction is as much as 10 percent of the company's workforce. EA employed 9,370 people at the end of 2012.

Earlier today, a report emerged claiming that the EA Partners label--which is designed to bring third-party games to market--is shutting down.

Today's layoffs are part of an ongoing wave of cuts related to EA streamlining its business to ensure the company is well positioned for the upcoming console transition, among other things.

The cuts come a month after John Riccitiello resigned from his post as CEO of EA.

Various developers reached out today to those affected by the cuts. Irrational Games, Gearbox Software, and Insomniac Games all tweeted links to open positions at their companies.

I miss the old EA. Back when they developed/published games like General Chaos and James Pond. Oh and of course the Mutant League series.

Guys, please. Don't look to the gaming industry for a lifelong career and financial stability. No one's means of supporting themselves should be at the mercy of a MetaCritic review.

Um, maybe if their shit was playable on day one out of the box wihout always online bs, they would not need to lay people off. Or hear is a thought, maybe if their games were actually any good....

lol Shitty companies always love to lay off when they have too much capacity and rehire when they need more capacity. That way they can maximize their profits all the way through. Makes perfect sense when you're at the top. Just die already EA. Just die.

EA: "So how do we make more money?"

Gamers: "Well you could make better games."

EA: "Or we could fire everyone and make worse games cheaper so we still make a profit"

Gamers: "...."

Better to get rid of the suits. ( CEOs, management )

No many people realize that one of the reasons for the high cost of new games has a lot to do with the outrageous salaries that the suits make.

Better optimization or new Porsche..hmmm ?

Yes! EA cuts all of employees off the place, then they all would be able to join those great game video studios such as Capcom, Konami, etc to make better games than stupid EA games.

@petez34 well... Happy to be a moron in that case. There seems to be a lack of moral judgement these days. EA doesn't use slaves. They hire people. People are free to choose to accept a job offer from EA, or not.
If I work for an evil man, does that make me evil? No easy answer. But I would say yes.
Those workers decided to accept the offer to work for EA. A company who's main moto is profit first, people second. I reckon that when things were going good for EA, it was also going very good for them. Today people have a tendency to dissociate the morality of their own professional decisions from their personal views. A bit like the dictator's thrall that upon his demise claims he never liked him but had no choice.
I can't feel sorry for someone who made the decision to work for an evil company, when that company betrays them. They got what they asked for when they decided to place money making above morality.

@TigusVidiks @petez34 Where are you getting this 'evil' company from? EA make video games ffs, that's it. It's not like they destroy the planet. And what EA is doing is trying to make profits apparently according you that's a bad thing. So you're not into the whole capitalism ideology, fine. It's a business they operate to make money and don't abuse workers rights. I don't know anyone in life that would have the balls to be say what you did in public, nor would I want to.

@petez34 @petez34 evil, as an easy to understand word to avoid making a sentence every time. I consider that EA uses immoral business practices to maximize profits, in detriment of customer satisfaction. To me, that makes them evil. Immorality = evil.Anyone who works there, is simply compromising their integrity.
I have nothing against a company that is out to make profit.
I have everything against a company that considers immoral practices a legit way of maximizing those profits.

To be honest with all of you, this is beginning to look more and more like a video-game mini-crash. The customers are pissed with draconian DRM schemes, the publishers are despised, and the developers are now unable to sell games that were huge AAA financial investments.
More and more gaming studios and publishers are removing themselves from E3, meaning E3 is landing with a bit of a thud this year, and the whole thing just seems to be going down the drain.

I say it is about time, too. Sadly, crashing the companies doing evil to us (namely DRM) is the only way we can get back the rights that are ours as consumers. Bring on the crash, I say.

It would be poetic justice if all the people EA has abused and fired over the years formed their own company and put EA out of business.

I feel bad for the guys and gals getting ousted. It must be aggrevating to feel that you have a great job and then suddenly get the pink slip because the company you presumably felt good working at decides that they aren't making enough money with you there. If they keep cutting workers there, then I guess they'll just have to cut and paste from used games? It seems that's all their sports games anyways, so maybe they'll be successful as a cut and paste game company?

@moodyfoo @PSYCHOV3N0M That is actually Gary's Mod. Amazing little mod/game that runs off the Half-life 2 Valve Engine. If only more companies like valve allowed us to Mod and play their games how we wanted, we would see soo many more games with longer lives. Its funny, more people play Team Fortress 2 on PC than all of the COD games combined (On PC of course). All thanks to great Mod Support.

Obviously they had to fire all these people because of the sheer amount of gamers "embracing microtransactions" right? That's how business works if you only use EA as an example! "We're making shit loads of cash oh and *cough*wehavetofirelotsofpeoplebecauseofhowmuchwearen'treallymaking*cough*"

There should be a law restricting big businesses from doing massive lay-offs such as this. It's as if they do this on a daily basis. Damn shame, in order for the top man to get his bonus or 10% pay increase, the bottom are affected.
