EA cuts more jobs

Battlefield, FIFA publisher confirms staff reductions, but won't specify number of teams affected.

Electronic Arts cuts more jobs today as part of a "hard but essential" process, according to a statement from the Battlefield and FIFA publisher posted on the company's blog.

No Caption Provided

"In recent weeks, EA has aligned all elements of its organizational structure behind priorities in new technologies and mobile. This has led to some difficult decisions to reduce the workforce in some locations," an EA representative said. "We are extremely grateful for the contributions made by each of our employees--those that are leaving EA will be missed by their colleagues and friends.

"These are hard but essential changes as we focus on delivering great games and showing players around the world why to spend their time with us," the statement goes on.

EA declined to say which teams were impacted or how many jobs were cut overall. However, multiple sources have told Kotaku that the staff reduction is as much as 10 percent of the company's workforce. EA employed 9,370 people at the end of 2012.

Earlier today, a report emerged claiming that the EA Partners label--which is designed to bring third-party games to market--is shutting down.

Today's layoffs are part of an ongoing wave of cuts related to EA streamlining its business to ensure the company is well positioned for the upcoming console transition, among other things.

The cuts come a month after John Riccitiello resigned from his post as CEO of EA.

Various developers reached out today to those affected by the cuts. Irrational Games, Gearbox Software, and Insomniac Games all tweeted links to open positions at their companies.

Sure glad I don't work in game development. There are plenty of development opportunities with much better job security (and pay).

Good luck to all the devs affected by these layoffs.

As for EA, I take what they say with a pinch of salt.

I think this is a good move on their part.

Seems like the new guy is allocating his resources and taking in what he's got.

New guy comes in and fires everyone. It's nothing new.

@H0rizon @rann89 Only if he's removing leadership positions - which the article implies he is not. He's just dropping coders. You won't see any changes in EA's approach to making games or treating its customers.

I love how EA just can't admit there a mess, they keep saying how this is to prepare for new tech and next gen, when everyone knows is just that they know there the worst of the worst and are taking it out on the employees, I bet you take everyone laid off over the past months and use them to make a game and i'll be better than any of the crap EA has put out recently.

Maybe I'm the only one thinking this but I really feel bad for the developers that got fired. The problem with EA isn't the development teams, it is the upper management; they always interfere with a game because they don't think it will be profitable but all they really do is make the game worse; Sim City being a prime example. In a sense I'm glad that at the very least the developers are getting screwed just like the gamers that buy EA products. I for one learned my lesson with Sim City, maybe i learned it late but better late than never. BF4? BF what? Don't need another rehash or anything made by EA. They have dragged all my favorite childhood games now down into the mud; but that wasn't enough! They had to ruin the memories i had of the originals.

Eternal rest grant onto them; may they rest in peace. May their souls and all the faithful departed rest in peace.

NFS III: Hot Pursuit (1998)
NFS Underground (2003)
CNC Red Alert (1996)
CNC Generals: Zero Hour (2003)
Sim City 3000 (1999)
BF2 (2005)
BF3 (2011)

Terrible news, sorry to hear all this EA news, like it or not they release a lot of high quality games and any time that gets slowed down it's bad for the industry. Hope once next gen gets going they start to grow again. Hope the affected quickly find work and give unemployment the middle finger.

im waiting for the pathetic sheep who follow corporate cr*p and blame this on pirates / used game markets.

when in fact the main thing that hurts sales, consumers, devs, even cats and dogs , is the greed and stupidity of CEO's / boards / stake holders, but hey we are all stupid enough to allow big corporations to put margins, profits/ figures ahead of human lives, its is a business after all, isnt that what silly little sheep say

"EA cuts more jobs", pure lies. I just saw an ad from EA: "Looking for sixty to seventy employees experienced in processing micro-transactions from paying customers". True story! Hehe.

Less than a month ago, gamespot had an article stating that EA decided to pay their interim executive $1.03 million as an annual salary with the possibility of a bonus at the end of his term. They're firing employees out of greed and little else.
