EA cuts more jobs

Battlefield, FIFA publisher confirms staff reductions, but won't specify number of teams affected.

Electronic Arts cuts more jobs today as part of a "hard but essential" process, according to a statement from the Battlefield and FIFA publisher posted on the company's blog.

No Caption Provided

"In recent weeks, EA has aligned all elements of its organizational structure behind priorities in new technologies and mobile. This has led to some difficult decisions to reduce the workforce in some locations," an EA representative said. "We are extremely grateful for the contributions made by each of our employees--those that are leaving EA will be missed by their colleagues and friends.

"These are hard but essential changes as we focus on delivering great games and showing players around the world why to spend their time with us," the statement goes on.

EA declined to say which teams were impacted or how many jobs were cut overall. However, multiple sources have told Kotaku that the staff reduction is as much as 10 percent of the company's workforce. EA employed 9,370 people at the end of 2012.

Earlier today, a report emerged claiming that the EA Partners label--which is designed to bring third-party games to market--is shutting down.

Today's layoffs are part of an ongoing wave of cuts related to EA streamlining its business to ensure the company is well positioned for the upcoming console transition, among other things.

The cuts come a month after John Riccitiello resigned from his post as CEO of EA.

Various developers reached out today to those affected by the cuts. Irrational Games, Gearbox Software, and Insomniac Games all tweeted links to open positions at their companies.

So that's fewer people to pressure developers into making games to their criteria.

@Warlord_Irochi @lilnazar He never said he 'gave a crap' about the jobs people will lose. Don't put words in his mouth.

As for the people that will lose their jobs, they will most likely be able to get other jobs at better company's. As much as we hate EA, a reccomendation from them on your resume' is a big plus.

@Warlord_Irochi @lilnazar It's not our fault the workers remain jobless. We just hate the company for what it does. Rest is not our problem. Most of them cand find jobs at other companies.

@smurfa1 That's why I said I feel bad for the people that lost their job. I never would rejoice at someone losing their job but a company like EA has to go. Smaller developers can take the IP's from EA and profit off those. Same thing happened when THQ went out of business. Actually, if that happened maybe, just maybe, some of the IP's can be saved. That's a long shot though...

@smurfa1 developers don't need major publishers these days.

Look at Chris Roberts with Star Citizen... dude hasn't made a game in ages and all of a sudden he's put his own money, and generated enough investment from the private sector and crowd funding based on his name and reputation alone.

An entire team of developers could easily do something smaller while still being very profitable (remember, no EA leaches to pay).

Of course, they have to be the kind of developers that can make something good on their own to justify that type of risk... and coming from EA, without franchise awareness and AAA advertising behind them, the quality of their work will really be the only reason they're successful.... and that should scare a lot of them, because a lot of those types of AAA developers really should NOT be making games. Look at the clowns making MoH these days... put them out at sea on their own today and they'd sink.

There's nothing to feel sorry for here.

It's a poorly run industry that continues to be run poorly. Sadly whatever happens around these layoffs... nothing will change from it

@smurfa1 maybe but all this means we will no longer have triple a titles which personally think is going to shit right now. i think a new gaming developer is needed that actually thinks and knows about making games rather than pure profit

let's hope these former employees have enough sense not to be rehired if the offer comes around.

Hell, it's about time all developers turned their back on EA. Let them make games with who they've got left.

EA have been doing this kind of thing for a long time, and it's gotten to the point that the rehired employees are just as much to blame for being rehired over and over for whatever new project they're contracted to.

Folks that really don't like how they're treated by an employer and aren't motivated by base levels of greed and a lack of integrity are willing to say NO when offered their jobs back again.

Then what happens?... the employuee with integrity finds something better and the employer with no integrity starts to struggle, the cracks start to show... and then they either crumble on their own, or the stockholders/head management/etc start dismantling sub departments.

When there aren't any employees left to ditch, then middle management go, then upper management, then you've got executives who can't hide how much they're effectively stealing from the company for doing nothing!

And in a perfect world people could afford to think like that but this is the real world and this is the year 2013 and we still haven't recovered from 2008 and not many people can afford to be choosers.

@Deadly_Nemesis

that's why things like recessions happen, the herd live in fear of big decisions so they go along to get along.

I've done it, and I've had friends do it. No security in a choice, total risk. We all ended up with better paying jobs, better conditions AND more job security (not that that anyone should ever truly rely on that sort of thing) because we had the balls to make the right decision at the right time. And the folks we left behind are still scratching their heads how we did it, and still worried about their crappy jobs with the crappy pay that they're afraid to move on from. Same industry too mind you.

There are a million opportunities in the workplace regardless of the myth of a recession... people just have to be honest with themselves. If you're motivated by money... deal with the fact that you've become a slave to the $$$.

This is a consequence of the bloat within the AAA industry where every game has to reach CoD levels of success. Exuberant sums of money are being spent to try and chase and capture Activision's lightening, despite the fact that Activision spends far less on the game others are trying to emulate.

To paraphrase Jim Sterling, "Publishers and developers are trying to make the perfect game, and not perfect games."

It's good other companies are offering positions. Look like EA is losing about 900 people though. That's a LOT of jobs to try to fill. Good luck to all the people who are being dismissed.

Nonetheless, they don't take the money if it doesn't make their goal.

I recommend that all fans who can KS it to please do so.

@acelogan1989 Yes indeed Back in Action was utter shit!

Looks like this will not be so and they cite just why in their premise! They even said "No dumbing down" and "don't mess with a good thing" in regards to the core mechanic!

Don't take my word for it. Check them out.

And remember that if it doesn't make the money to be made they don't charge you.

These guys look like a solid group of devs versus the usual sketchy Russian crap we've gotten before (no insult intended Pareni, no situatsia bila takaya!)
