EA cuts more jobs

Battlefield, FIFA publisher confirms staff reductions, but won't specify number of teams affected.

Electronic Arts cuts more jobs today as part of a "hard but essential" process, according to a statement from the Battlefield and FIFA publisher posted on the company's blog.

No Caption Provided

"In recent weeks, EA has aligned all elements of its organizational structure behind priorities in new technologies and mobile. This has led to some difficult decisions to reduce the workforce in some locations," an EA representative said. "We are extremely grateful for the contributions made by each of our employees--those that are leaving EA will be missed by their colleagues and friends.

"These are hard but essential changes as we focus on delivering great games and showing players around the world why to spend their time with us," the statement goes on.

EA declined to say which teams were impacted or how many jobs were cut overall. However, multiple sources have told Kotaku that the staff reduction is as much as 10 percent of the company's workforce. EA employed 9,370 people at the end of 2012.

Earlier today, a report emerged claiming that the EA Partners label--which is designed to bring third-party games to market--is shutting down.

Today's layoffs are part of an ongoing wave of cuts related to EA streamlining its business to ensure the company is well positioned for the upcoming console transition, among other things.

The cuts come a month after John Riccitiello resigned from his post as CEO of EA.

Various developers reached out today to those affected by the cuts. Irrational Games, Gearbox Software, and Insomniac Games all tweeted links to open positions at their companies.

Why are people commenting like these people died? They lost their job, they'll find another or collect. Can't take any more "praying" "condolences" crap. Let's start wearing grey colored ribbons so we can remember the people that were tragically laid off...

@atlanticmoon You're probably some student who doesn't have to crawl out of bed till 10am. Try looking for work and see how hard it is. Grow up and show some empathy.

@atlanticmoon Because everyone enjoys finding a new job after getting fired! Might need to relocate, move your whole family, hold on to every dime you can till you find one (if you can), might even miss a bill or two but who cares! It's damn right fun to get fired! Hell, why don't we all do our best to get fired from our jobs?

Is it not obvious? Anything that isn't related to Battlefield probably got the short end of the stick. And soon, once Battlefield has been milked for all it's worth, they'll find another franchise that resonates with gamers, and proceed to suck it dry, as they always do.

It's seriously infuriating that there's so much talk about how evil EA is amongst gamers, yet they're one of the biggest publishers on the scene. Stop buying their mediocre software and give your money and support to others that deserve it already.

The sad thing is that people who got fired most likely arent the ones that made the bone headed stupid decisions. Best of luck to them and hope they quickly get back on their feet.

You don't need creative ambitious people working for you when all you have to make are lazy freemium always online re-hashes of the same game every year laced with microtransactions.

I hope some of these devs get a job with Irrational or others. Much better for them in the long-run anyway.

I wonder how many peoples lives, mortgages, healthcare and other bills will be thrown into havoc for managerial malfeasance? As always, my thoughts go out to all the fodder that will take the arrows for the executive garbage.

Wow, EA stock is falling fast. Their once mighty empire of buying out franchises and milking them for what they are worth is crumbling around them. And when things turn bad, it's the working Joe that gets shafted first. How about the CEOs and executives take a pay cut to help their budget? If only logic dicated these type of things

@realscarygary @cagedwolf For the moment, but they are still quite a bit down from what they were previously. At this point people are still "hoping" they are moving in a different direction when little to nothing has been proven at this point other than they like firing people and the head honcho wanted somebody else to fix the problem after he left

@cagedwolf They won't though, since it's the CEOs who made those decisions in the first place. They wanted a quick short-term profit and naturally suffered in the long run, now they're paying for that mistake (quite literally it seems) and are looking to keep the profit they made by firing people.

CEOs are over payed, talentless, soulless, inhuman, degenerate pieces of shit that deserve to be run over by a truck. The reason why all these big companies fucking suck and have to fire hardworking individuals is because they are run by incompetent demons that were clearly shat out of Satan's asshole.

I work for a Fortune 100 company and every time I see an announcement like the one EA has up above, I always think the same thing:

Just once would you phrase it like you're a human being and not either a corporate drone or an utter weasel?

Try this approach as it's actually what they're really saying:

"Our corporate strategy has changed. We think that the future of our industry is in appealing to broader audiences via mobile and social game development and away from blockbuster titles that require huge headcounts and budget to produce.

Since this is our new strategy, we're going to be cutting the number of big budget titles we work on, which means we're now overstaffed and need to cut expenses to optimize our workforce towards our new direction. It doesn't take nearly as many people to create a smartphone game as it does the next top-of-the-line PS4 title.

Some people might think that our own mismanagement has caused some of our current problems. Specifically, we rush games out before they are ready and cut corners and insist on forcing established franchises into new genres or to include modes like multiplayer that they don't really need. These are valid concerns, but they don't change the bottom line that we're going in a different direction with our strategy going forward and that our new direction requires cost cuts.

We don't have anything personal against the employees we're letting go. We just think they're the least valuable individuals on our workforce and the ones we can most afford to lose as we go in our new direction. Whether they are just not as talented as some others, don't have the right connections within the company, or are overpaid relative to what they produce even if what they produce is very good, these are the ones we feel we need to cut to move in our new direction.

Good luck to them finding new jobs. Thanks for the work you did for us while you were here."

For me personally, if I was fired I'd MUCH rather have the reasoning given in plain English instead of weaselese.

@silvergol @nocoolnamejim

To be clear: I work for a Fortune 100 company, but not for EA. I have not been laid off from where I work. I've just seen the sort of phrasing EA used to announce it's layoffs plenty of times in the past.

Apologies for the confusion.
