Heavy Rain sales to top 1.5 million, says Cage

Quantic Dream head tells German site Play3.de that his studio's PS3-exclusive psychological thriller has already gone platinum--and he thinks it should sell 500,000 more copies by year's end.

It's official: Heavy Rain is a hit. The critically acclaimed game got off to a solid start in February, selling more than 200,000 copies in just four days in the US. Now, the head of the developer of the PlayStation 3-exclusive psychological thriller is crowing about its worldwide success--and how much he expects it to sell by year's end.

Heavy Rain's visuals may be shadowy, but its future is bright.
Heavy Rain's visuals may be shadowy, but its future is bright.

"We have sold more than 1 million copies of Heavy Rain worldwide," Quantic Dream cofounder and co-CEO David Cage told German site Play3.de. "That was a surprise to many, since estimated sales were between 200,000 to 300,000 units. We estimate that by the end of the year, we will have sold 1.5 million copies and are very pleased with the reception."

Cage was especially pleased with the sales, given that Heavy Rain didn't conform to normal game genres. "Our game isn't an action game, it's not a role-playing game, [and] it's not an adventure. It isn't in any one genre. When you create a new, convention-busting game to the market, it's always a risk, both for the developer and the publisher."

Heavy Rain was developed by Quantic Dream, the Paris-based shop behind 2005's Indigo Prophecy (aka Fahrenheit) for the PC, PlayStation 2, and Xbox. Like that critically acclaimed title, Heavy Rain eschews normal game genres for a more cinematic approach, focusing on complex storytelling and emotion via realistic graphics. Heavy Rain follows the pursuit of a mysterious serial murderer, with players controlling several characters who must collect clues in a film-noir-style setting to crack the case.

The first expansion for Heavy Rain, The Taxidermist, was released last week on the PlayStation Network. More Heavy Rain Chronicles episodes are planned throughout the course of the year, and the game will support the PlayStation Move motion-control system when it is released this holiday season.

Great game, glad it's doing well. Quantic Dream is 3/3 for me now. Their games my be few and far-between, but they've all pushed the idea of what a "game" can be a bit further. Hope they keep up the great work.

@ heds777 some games don't need a multiplayer element to be good. I hate when developers spend so much time on the multiplayer component that the single player suffers. Bioshock 2 comes to mind....

They have not sold 1.5 mill they think they will I personally don't think it will sell much over a million because of the type of game it is. It was a great game but it's not what most casual gamers r into and that will hurt it's future sales unfortunately. If they wanted it to get to 1.5 or over they should of gone muti plat with it.

It is great to hear it sold well because that game was awesome. I didn't think it would sell that many. That very impresive as its a PS3 exclusive and there is no multiplayer element.

I borrowed this from a friend beat it, and still went out to buy my own copy after I returned it to him. I hope to see more for Heavy Rain, and more games from Quantic Dream

@force_user1975 "Any game these days can sell 1 million, it's getting to the 3-4-5 million range that means something IMO." Any game can sell a million copies? Hardly. If you're looking at the Top 20 all the time, sure, a million seems average. That represents a very small percentage of the software being made, of course. If you make something decidedly commercial - a big-budget shooter, a sequel, a new entry in a sports franchise, something with Mario - sales are easy. For a new I.P. in a genre that is commercially unproven? A million or two units is quite impressive. It gives a lot of hope for more dedicated gamers that companies will be more willing to take a chance on something new.

So it sold over a million, And they are "Guessing" it will sell 500k more copies this year...even though the game is out of the top 15 in sales already. Any game these days can sell 1 million, it's getting to the 3-4-5 million range that means something IMO

Eh, not exactly impressive world sales for a interactive movie.. err game. Believe UFC 2009 got over a million sales in two weeks just for the Xbox 360 alone in the US. Doubt I will pick it up even if its $20 with all the DLC in the future.

Excellent news. Great to see something different rake in the bucks. Madison Paige is doubtlessly going to get a sequel; I humbly ask that you make her much, much smarter this time. Stop having her stroll into the offices or homes of psychotic killers, unarmed and alone. Not even the most vigilant guardian angel can keep up with her.

Definitely one of the best games I ever played. So you see publishers? Not all games have to be sequels or generic FPSs to succeed!

@pete_merlin There can't be a sequel to it because the story has ended. He did however say that he would make another game in the "interactive drama" genre just like heavy rain, it would just be a different story.

Congrats! Happy to see an innovative company being encouraged like this. Still haven't played it; maybe I'll put the $15 I'm not spending on an unmentioned game's overpriced DLC towards this. GoWIII might take priority though.

And 90% of those sales are from Europe. Seriously, Sony of America didn't even push this game. I was hoping for a Kevin Butler commercial where he's the VP of Crying Games. So disappointed that instead we get commercials for MLB, the show.

Money is tight these days but I buckled down and saved up in order to get this game. I'm glad I did, I'll forgive the Paco Mendez section of the game because the devs are French. I look forward to more unique games like this in the future!!!
