Heavy Rain sales to top 1.5 million, says Cage

Quantic Dream head tells German site Play3.de that his studio's PS3-exclusive psychological thriller has already gone platinum--and he thinks it should sell 500,000 more copies by year's end.

It's official: Heavy Rain is a hit. The critically acclaimed game got off to a solid start in February, selling more than 200,000 copies in just four days in the US. Now, the head of the developer of the PlayStation 3-exclusive psychological thriller is crowing about its worldwide success--and how much he expects it to sell by year's end.

Heavy Rain's visuals may be shadowy, but its future is bright.
Heavy Rain's visuals may be shadowy, but its future is bright.

"We have sold more than 1 million copies of Heavy Rain worldwide," Quantic Dream cofounder and co-CEO David Cage told German site Play3.de. "That was a surprise to many, since estimated sales were between 200,000 to 300,000 units. We estimate that by the end of the year, we will have sold 1.5 million copies and are very pleased with the reception."

Cage was especially pleased with the sales, given that Heavy Rain didn't conform to normal game genres. "Our game isn't an action game, it's not a role-playing game, [and] it's not an adventure. It isn't in any one genre. When you create a new, convention-busting game to the market, it's always a risk, both for the developer and the publisher."

Heavy Rain was developed by Quantic Dream, the Paris-based shop behind 2005's Indigo Prophecy (aka Fahrenheit) for the PC, PlayStation 2, and Xbox. Like that critically acclaimed title, Heavy Rain eschews normal game genres for a more cinematic approach, focusing on complex storytelling and emotion via realistic graphics. Heavy Rain follows the pursuit of a mysterious serial murderer, with players controlling several characters who must collect clues in a film-noir-style setting to crack the case.

The first expansion for Heavy Rain, The Taxidermist, was released last week on the PlayStation Network. More Heavy Rain Chronicles episodes are planned throughout the course of the year, and the game will support the PlayStation Move motion-control system when it is released this holiday season.

These sales might help Sega realise there is a market for these types of games and coerce them to release Shenmue 3.

I would consider getting Move if it's integrated astoundingly awesome. I'm talking like full 1:1 movement. I wanna have to butt floss with that towel during the shower scene, that's how integrated I want this.

I don't know why people are saying this is something new. Point and click adventures have been around for years. Its good to see they have restarted this forgotten genre tho. I hope now more companies will make good point and click adventures, I miss them. Like broken sword and monkey island.

Glad to see that this game is doing well. I thought Heavy Rain was pretty good, although the controls were a little frustrating especially when it came to movement. I know a lot of people don't like Heavy Rain because to them its not really a game but more of an interactive movie. Whether you like it or not you have to give Quantic Dream credit for trying something new. Hopefully this kind of success will encourage other developers to try new things and experiment with new concepts instead of giving us sequels of the same games year after year.

Congrats to Quantic Dream for finally striking gold. It's really refreshing to see that gamers are willing to purchase something new and innovative, as opposed to the latest fragfest or big-name sequel. It's also a bit of a surprise.

Honestly, I own it and really it's rental material at best and not worth a purchase. It's barely even a game. .... More like a movie you click buttons to, and although it has some good moments, it has some terribly mundane bits, and weird controls Beaten it a couple of times now, they would have improved it a lot if the villain was different depending on how you played, because at the moment there isn't really a real reason to replay because you know whats going to happen, it's always the same guy! and honestly fanboi wars are retarded and pre-emptive fanboi defence is even more lame. I own both consoles and a PC, and the reality is every platform has different flaws, none are perfect and all have some great games. So just shut up and enjoy the games you can play...

Excellent game. It was an experience unlike others I've played, and I hope the great sales warrant the genre to continue and improve.

Another quality game. Though those sad Halo fanboys would say otherwise, but that's all right. I hope they enjoy garbage.

Funny how there will be 360 owners on here saying some stupid crap about how "this game sucks" or "this game doesn't deserve the sales" or even "what a boring crappy game". Well it's not. It's getting the sales it deserves from people who actually do something else besides shoot brainless terrorists. Gonna be funny to see how many 360 fanboys and trolls get on this story.
