Hitman: Absolution dev says game limited by current gen - Report

The game's art director Roberto Marchesi says Xbox 360 and Sony PS3 "limited" the upcoming stealth action game.

Hitman: Absolution art director Roberto Marchesi has revealed that development of the upcoming stealth action title was limited by current-generation hardware.

No Caption Provided

Speaking to Trusted Reviews, Marchesi admitted that there were things he would have liked to see implemented in the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Hitman: Absolution that weren't possible due to current hardware, and that the game "does start to show the limitations of the current technology."

However, Marchesi added that working with current-generation hardware provides developers with a welcome challenge.

"The first games that will come out for the next generation of consoles will probably be just like an up-scaled version of everything," he said. "All the textures will be ramped up twice, the resolution, everything…that’s really just a brute-force approach to making great-looking games, and, in a way, it's much more of a challenge doing it with this current generation."

Hitman: Absolution is scheduled for a global release on November 20, 2012, on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

This is something a game developer should NEVER say: when technology limits you, it is where creativity shines! Let gameplay talk, and there's plenty of room to make a fantastic game with current hardware!

They didn't even maximize the potential of this game.

No other games this year look like they have vaseline smothered all over them... what a total cop out

The graphics? You're worried about the graphics? How about you forgetting you were making a "Hitman" game and instead ended making a very linear stealth action shooter, but no, YOU'RE WORRIED ABOUT THE FREAKIN' GRAPHICS?!

Huh. And I thought it was the garbage A.I. and action-oriented gameplay that limited the game...

I'm sorry but this is some of the most B.S. that I've ever read. He has to be kidding me. It's funny how he feels this way when the super-duper guys over at Rockstar believe that there is still a lot of power left in these machines. For starters they're making a GTA that's the size of all of their previous open-worlds combined along with highly strong visuals, plus based on the description they gave Michael's house (one of the main protagonist) and the FIB capture and retrieve mission, it appears that one can seamlessly enter and exit buildings! I mean seriously. What this guy he's saying is ridiculous. It's clear that Rockstar is still pushing the consoles to their utmost limits and they haven't even had one negative comment to say about them. Here's what Dan Houser had to say in a recent interview with IGN regarding the performance of current-gen consoles, "Some other people talk about the limitations of the [current] hardware. We don't feel there are that many limitations. We feel we can do some very impressive stuff and do it for a large audience...we could say everything we wanted to say and do everything we wanted to do on these machines. We didn't sit there saying, "We'd like to do this in the game, but we can't." There's plenty of power in these machines." And this is coming from a man that is creating a game that is MILES upon MILES more ambitious than Hitman: Absolution.

BOOYA! How you like that Hitman Art Director? :-)

It's really nice when games have great graphics, but gameplay should always be priority one. If you look at past Hitman games, I think that you will find that IO knows this. In fact, IO is always a bit too ambitious which always makes their games a little buggy. I don't love them any less for it though.

It's curious that Rockstar said the exact opposite about current hardware. I guess the one advantage is that when you get used to working on one platform, you can utilize it to its full potential.

This is absolutely foolish for him to say that. If graphics were to be the 'be all' and 'end all' of gaming, then why not release Hitman Absolution sometimes in 2014 or 2015 ? NO..... they need some money. So just shut up and release the damn thing. If the game is really good, I mean in terms of game play, story/content, re playability value, then people will definitely have fun playing the game. I saw the trailer and the demo and it looks stunning. I don't think people will want anything more than whatever the developers have for them at this point. A bug free game is more than enough for me. Speaking of next gen, I don't honestly believe gaming can get as close as possible to real life.

Hm, does this news apply for the pc version? Sure hope not, I don't even care about the graphics anyway. As long as the game is fun and addicting, who cares about it?

Also, just to see how pointless this whole thing is, just look at the first mission. It's better than Dishonored, except the lip-synching. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awTFFfodtro

@evil-zodiark Dishonored got their face shit on by Hitman. If you played that game, you'll notice that its just a stripped hybrid of Deus Ex Human Revolution and Bioshock with predictable story and gameplay mechanics that feels lacking, like the non lethal takedowns. Why can't you just punch someone in front of you or use a power to knock them out? Instead your only non-lethal attacks are choking and sleeping darts. Why?

@Volgin Thanks for your tech geeky, in-depth info. Anyway, what exactly is the current gen consoles limited by theirs hardware specs? I really don't mind the illusion as long as it could bring the most out of the current gen. However, I agree that the big 3 should not be frugal on using high tech specs on their consoles since they won't upgrade them very often.

To bad this discussion was ruined by graphic whores using this article to grow their e-peen, people that care more about a damn pixel than having fun, pathetic honestly.

I'm both a PC and console gamer (playing more PC now), i welcome the next generation of consoles with open arms the next year because this guy has a good point (besides we need more processing power on consoles now), but is really disgusting to see all these people over exaggerating and bashing the console gamers just because they play some select "few" games with better performance, a good game will be good, and people don't give a shit about graphics as long as the game is playable with good gameplay until we wait for the next gen of consoles, remember the PS1 days vs the N64? or the Sega CD vs the SNES? or the arcade scene? yes, we need a new console gen but stop using that as an excuse only to show your almighty ego.

Gaming is all about having fun and not being a moron playing games only to bash the people that don't play them.

Sorry, just not buyin' into this. If this was God of War, Uncharted, Gears of War, Assassins Creed art director, etc saying this I would be okay with the comment but I never seen Hitman as a Graphical masterpiece or even close but I always loved the gameplay.

What makes you think only the graphics got limitted? If the consoles had more memory then levels could be larger and could contain more stuff. If there was more CPU power, they could have more/smarter NPCs. And so on....

I am basing my presumption off the fact that he is the art director, and it is not clarified what areas of the game that are limited.

When consoles fully move to digital that's when I will completely switch to PC for gaming. I'd rather have physical copies of my games.

Why can't console makers make their devices upgradable? It's stupid to start from scratch. Sorta like buying a new car to get better tires.

Nah, that kicks the whole idea of a console right where it hurts. One of the main points of these things is that they are EASY. The developers will know exactly what hardware will be there, the consumer will know that, if it says "PS4" on the box, it will definitely run on the PS4, and the consumer will never ever have to figure out the differences between main memory, video memory, and CPU cache memory. It's easy to buy games for somebody with an XBox but it can be tricky to buy one for somebody with a PC.

That's what I've been wanting for a long time. I hate having to buy entirely new systems every few years. I would have no problem spending a bit of money to upgrade certain parts of the console. It would even be cheaper and stuff for companies to just produce the seperate components instead of selling an entire machine.

wah wah graphics..... you know what graphics dont really matter as long as the gameplay is great. retro city rampage is a great example. plants vs zombies, minecraft, etc.... my point is the graphics could be the best EVER, but if the gameplay sucks then whats the point of all the flashy graphics?

@3v1LR0n1N I agree with you 100% in stating that gameplay will trump graphics any day of the week. I also think that this article could refer to things other than graphics, such as computing power, memory use, and even data storage. (if they developed for only a Dual Layer DVD then that is a BIG data restriction compared to a 50GB BD.)

I remember the big thing from the development of hitman blood money was the amount of people on screen. So I wouldn't be surprised if they were limited there somehow.

@VenkmanPHD yeah that is true..... space is definitely a problem for any generation really (especially for the gamecube discs lol) if every system could use dual layer BD.. either way even with said limitation we still get good to amazing games on consoles AND PC. and both will get better with time of course ;)...... one idea though..... a console with customization capabilities so it can be more flexible, just an idea though
