Hitman: Absolution dev says game limited by current gen - Report

The game's art director Roberto Marchesi says Xbox 360 and Sony PS3 "limited" the upcoming stealth action game.

Hitman: Absolution art director Roberto Marchesi has revealed that development of the upcoming stealth action title was limited by current-generation hardware.

No Caption Provided

Speaking to Trusted Reviews, Marchesi admitted that there were things he would have liked to see implemented in the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Hitman: Absolution that weren't possible due to current hardware, and that the game "does start to show the limitations of the current technology."

However, Marchesi added that working with current-generation hardware provides developers with a welcome challenge.

"The first games that will come out for the next generation of consoles will probably be just like an up-scaled version of everything," he said. "All the textures will be ramped up twice, the resolution, everything…that’s really just a brute-force approach to making great-looking games, and, in a way, it's much more of a challenge doing it with this current generation."

Hitman: Absolution is scheduled for a global release on November 20, 2012, on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

@carolino its just his way of telling if you are disappointed with the game, its because of the hardware limitation and not the game itself. ;P

Of course the game will be limited. Short of grunt power from all machines and memory is laughable. And yet people will come on this site and say their machines are still ok....

Seems to me like its a promotion move. He is trying to say it could have been better. I assume most of you haven't played the sniper challenge so you think this game is a fail- fact is this game is gonna be epic.

Wow, people are getting so defensive. All he's saying is they had ideas that the current tech wouldn't fully allow them to implement, and it could be as simple a reason as a lack of memory size. I've been playing the game and it's great, but I'd be willing to bet the mission structure came about because of the limitations of the resources on offer. You should actually be happy a dev is talking like this; he's already thinking about what new gameplay he can create with more power, not just thinking about how whizzy he can make a current gen game design look with next-gen visuals.

@corrus I am a MASSIVE Halo fan. They had to cheat ALOT in this game because of the restrictions. Bad textures, aweful looking grass that pops up right in front of you as well as many other things. You can actually see the textures pop up right in front of you.The game could have looked sooo much better if they had waited .

This is complete bullhunky. Limited by "current gen consoles"? Have these people played Uncharted or Killzone? Consoles are not limiting in any sense. You work with what you have. Look at GTA V. That game is going to have a huge map and it's graphics are beautiful! Obviously these devs can't see the potential that current gen consoles have...

I think they just want better graphics to make it more immersive, Hitman is a game that relies on atmosphere alot. Considering Hitman looks great anyway, I admire the developers ambition. Consoles will always be at a disadvantage over pc's in argubly all respects, but I still prefer consoles by far.

When was Hitman famous of having a good looking-graphic ?

And taking about "limitations of the current technology" I think the he should focus more on optimization, level design and animation.

Make the game for PC then downscale it where needed to fit console limitations. Can't use consoles as an excuse for lack of features.

Then make it like in the good old times with superior PC version and graphicly dumbed down console version. I am guessing that the game is pretty mediocore on all platforms and now they are bringing the excuses.

@Elann2008 My words exactly.

Consoles limit all from graphics to AI, number of objects, number of possible interaction with the level invirement and physics. And ofc, making a game work with just a console controller lemits gameplay too, tho it has nothing to do with the power-limitation :)

Better graphics isn't mean better game or gameplay, is there a crappy story and crappy gameplay the game will sucks, no matter how good the graphics are.

@Dantes0007 Better graphics don't make or break a good game, but they definitely help. Better visuals help to immerse a player which enhances the gameplay and atmosphere overall. The first Crysis was very engaging with the level of detail all around you.

@Toysoldier34 Yeah but many Dev team will not make impresive graphics even with new console look a Medal of Honor: Warfigther looks good but is not selling well and that causes heavy financial loses for the company, not every company will take that risk with every game they made.

Most of gamers think that next gen = better graphic. Yes that is true but graphic is not only thing that is limited because of current gen. Today developers need to balance between graphic, physics, gameplay and AI because they have limited hardware resources. So to make better graphic they need to cut some things from AI and gameplay for example. And when they need to balance they can't express their creativity. That's why today are more and more console games with problem in framerate, pop-up, low res textures etc. because they want to put more content but console hardware can't process it.

@dex3108 Don't talk about limited where were you in the late 80s, and 90s? Look what they had to work with, and they still made some of the greatest video games anyone has ever seen.

@BigFeef Yea not powerful at all, it's not just the graphics that suffer but the amount of objects that can be rendered. Less characters on the screen, smaller multi player maps and player count, less detail in the world.

Next gen will be pretty impressive, though some PC titles have already been there.

@BigFeef

Do you seriously believe that current hardware on consoles are not limiting developers? Console games are still running at 20-30 frames per second. And if they run any slower, devs have to cut back on the technical aspects of the game like textures, etc. While PC gaming is 60fps with higher visual quality, higher resolution. Think about it. Obviously, you didn't think about it or else you wouldn't have posted such an ignorant, bias comment.

@Elann2008 It's the same whine cycle we witnessed last generation; it's not always about raw power, but how you utilize it. There are games that have been out 4-5 years running at native 1080p at a solid 30fps and still look better than a lot of the current crop of games. You have some devs who are thinking of maximizing and pushing the boundaries, while others are whining about limitations. The results speak for themselves and we will continue to see that until the end of this cycle.

And if you think that the human eye can distinguish between something running at a solid 25-30 fps and one that's running at a solid 60 fps then you need to get more than your eyes checked.

@PeterDuck @Elann2008 Both the PS3 and 360 can run at fully 1080p; but a lot of games released for both only do 720p. I have games for both that run at full 1080p. Don't know about the Wii because I've never owned one.

@BigFeef It's really not though :( I've tried to enjoy certain games on consoles, but the performance problems are just too severe to become immersed. And immersion is the number one most important aspect of gaming. It's what sets us apart from all other forms of entertainment.

Sound like an excuse to me since I can still see graphic improvement in current gen on many other studios such as: Konami in Metal Gear Solid 4(fox engine); Square Enix in Agni's Philosophy (Real-time tech); EA in Battlefield 3 or Medal of Honor - Warfighter(Frostbite engine); Quantic Dream in Beyond - Two souls, or Kara tech demo; Naughty Dog in Uncharted 3, or The Last of Us; Rockstar in LA. Noire; etc.

More than likely inconsequential things, at least as far as gameplay goes. Visually the game looks fine, I haven't seen anything yet to feel that its lacking on that front. Saying you wanted to put a washer and dryer in car, but ran out space, doesn't really mean much.

Some folks here have read and understood his point. Some other's are failing in their reading comprehension (or hardly read the actual - short article, at all). I'd wager the remainder are off base.

Comments like "then develop it for PC", well thank you for your remark. Unfortunately, this guy is the art director, and he does not have the authority to make that decision. It's like saying a corporate store shift manager should drop prices to whatever he/she wants if they feel they costs are too high, despite the products being subject to the listed prices handed down from the division in charge. He or she would be liable to be fired for performing such an action, without proper authorization.

Comments that "he's just making excuses" (insert negative tone in quote) are relatively inane at a basic level. Do you think if the developer in charge of art in Super Mario World had a vision to the level of Mario Galaxy, back when the SNES was released, that he wasn't held back from that vision by the tech of the time? It does remotely imply that Super Mario World will be or was a bad game. But it's definitively true that he was held back, from a technological standpoint. Excuse this art director for answering a question honestly.

The title of this article is catchy, but it's best to read the words within it. For the best context, it's best to locate the actual interview. This is made to fuel views, but it's also apparently making some appear ignorant. Relax.

PS - I, and many other people I know rarely ever actually complete an entire game. We are older. We don't have the most free time to spend on video games. We have a thick enough library to segment out attention to different things. So for those whom wish to bring up the prior comment, from someone else, about people not finishing the game -- it's based on data. Comments like those are rarely made ex nihilo. There are polls, and there is hard data from the implemented trophy/achievement system across the board to track this. Furthermore, it doesn't suggest they don't want you to complete it, or they don't want to try their damnedest to make the best product possible to keep your attention - as they have been doing for years. They aren't complaints, they're perspectives. They are noting a welcome challenge. Sometimes I feel like a few of the users here are quick to anger or hate language - it's unnecessary.

TL:DR - R.I.F. (Reading is Fundamental)

@UrbanTracker If they are, then they will read it. If they aren't, then they won't. I would do better to keep all of my comments short, but for the sake of clarity I'd like those who are interested in reading get a better picture of my message.

It's just a comment, and in the end, it's just something (first and foremost) to get a message off my mind. If nobody reads it, fine, but at least I said my piece. But you're correct, a more condensed message would likely grant more readers.

I did add a TL:DR version at the end btw.

Didn't they have a second team on the PC version? Seeing the PC isn't limited like the consoles and still superior to the first next-gen console (Wii U) in terms of hardware, the PC version should be a lot better? Right?

Just develop for the always up to date platform called PC first and then dumb it down to whatever aged console hardware is out there at the moment.

Problem solved, no more whining about current tech limiting your ingenious ideas.

Thank me later, devs ...

@captianash Consoles being the "best selling medium" is debatable and also depends on the genre and age group.

Besides, the majority of people I know hesitate to buy PC releases mostly because of all the DRM, launcher, activation, account registration, forced online mode, 3rd party software requirement madness.

If PC titles would not have all those annoying restrictions and instead be simple "buy (to own) -> download -> install -> play", we'd all be happier to give them our money, hence boosting PC sales.

In the article he's worried about current (console) tech limiting their game, which is a problem he wouldn't have if he'd be focusing on PC first instead. (but I get your point)

As long as the port to whatever platform is done well and with good effort I don't care if the egg or the chicken came first.

@bloody-hell Well said sir, and I wasn't dismissing your point either. However I'm just looking at the business side; that's what it really boils down to. You have to keep the customer happy. I can't say for sure but I would place a bet that they are expecting more copies of this game to be sold on consoles. So thinking in $$ terms it would be in the publishers best interest to make the best possible console version and focus on the second market... well second.
