Hitman: Absolution dev says game limited by current gen - Report

The game's art director Roberto Marchesi says Xbox 360 and Sony PS3 "limited" the upcoming stealth action game.

Hitman: Absolution art director Roberto Marchesi has revealed that development of the upcoming stealth action title was limited by current-generation hardware.

No Caption Provided

Speaking to Trusted Reviews, Marchesi admitted that there were things he would have liked to see implemented in the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Hitman: Absolution that weren't possible due to current hardware, and that the game "does start to show the limitations of the current technology."

However, Marchesi added that working with current-generation hardware provides developers with a welcome challenge.

"The first games that will come out for the next generation of consoles will probably be just like an up-scaled version of everything," he said. "All the textures will be ramped up twice, the resolution, everything…that’s really just a brute-force approach to making great-looking games, and, in a way, it's much more of a challenge doing it with this current generation."

Hitman: Absolution is scheduled for a global release on November 20, 2012, on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

Well, make it for the next gen then and stop complaining about his current gen.

Got tired of developers complaining about the "limitations" of this current gen trying to push the next gen to come earlier.

Let Sony and Microsoft take their time.

I bet some developers when the next gen gen comes, they will complain that its bit complicated to make games on PS4 or Xbox, like they did with PS3 for some years now.

Let the next gen come when it's ready.

Stupid excuse, if they say consoles are limiting them, keep the game a PC exclusive, or develop one for the platform from the ground up. This installment'd better be damn good, for their sake.

I get their point, older technology can't keep up with ideas... But why bring this up now? Say it AFTER release, now it just sounds like you got lazy and want expectations to be low. Or is this a slow transition into Molyneuxitis where you'll promise the world with amazing ideas and then give up and just make a tapping game?

I kinda wish that developers would make different versions for pc than consoles since pc's have (not all I guess) way better hardware. Then developers could possibly allow for way better graphics.

@Killer6b9 It seems to me that he's not making excuses as saying that they made a game that looks so killer (pun intended) that they reached the limit of the hardware. I mean, it's not so much an excuse as a fact that the hardware is just old; there's no getting around it, every game made in the past few years could have looked way better if it wasn't held down by the console hardware.

@Killer6b9

I don't think he's making excuses as much as he's saying straight up that what he wanted to do was totally not possible, and I think a lot of developers behind the scenes share the same sentiment.

Apparently it is. In most cases, consoles are the number one priority. Just look at Crysis 2 and Rage.

@Lost-to-Apathy @DrKill09 True, but you still can't argue that it would be easier for developers to focus solely on PC.

Hell Crysis 1 still looks better than any console game available and that came out 5 years ago. Look at the difference between Metro 2033 on the PC and on console (and the PC version doesn't even have the bugs that the console has).

It's times like these I honestly wish something could be done about piracy so developers would focus on PC gaming again.

@BuBsay @Lost-to-Apathy @DrKill09 Well said guys. Seriously, when Crysis 2 first came out it reeked of bad console portness and they had the nerve to say they focused on making the pc version look amazing. Then a few months later finally release a dx 11 patch which should have came with it in the first place and it still doesnt look better than the 5 year old Crysis. Crytek are just like any other developer out there. It will be interesting to see what Crysis 3 will look like.

It's hardware all the way from 2005, so of course they're limited by it.

Right. You see GTA 5 and you think Hitman can even measure up to that? Right. Making advanced apologies for making crap. Love this new tactic.

Sniper challenge had a few issues but it was just a demo... I hope the final build is smoother, I've never seen a game having such performance drops when you dare set some AA and AF.

I have some friends on that team, and I heard the same thing.

Well, the 720/PS4 should release next year, if not both, one of them.

Art direction and graphical prowess are mutually exclusive. You can always make something look better given what direction it took, but it's magnum opus will still be the same....only prettier. How you use the tools you are given is what truly matters.

@HipHopBeats What hype? Never has any Hitman game been hyped up. The game is coming out soon and all I see are Blops 2 commercials. Also so many developers are complaining about the lack of hardware. That isn't making excuses.

I'm curious just what "things" he wanted to implement that he couldn't. Interestingly enough he doesn't offer any examples.....

So put more work on the PC version then. PS3 and 360 are max out. Most people already know that. Also why do some people in the comments say he is talking bad about his game. He's clearly saying that is a challenge to make new games with old technology.

@doraemonllh1989 funny all my friends pirate on console. They don't like PCs for gaming. I used to pirate on consoles all the time. I never cared for pcs till now. The whole PC pirate thing is really old. Steam and gog prove many people also buy games.

The obvious solutions is to develop for PC and then underdevelop the game for crappy consoles such as PS3 and XBOX 360 :).

That's precisely my idea too: develop a game for PC first in order to realize your full potential, then release the game later on consoles.

The Witcher 2 is a good example.

@Michformer @GoKuVeGeTaGoHaN The right idea is to earn as much money as possible. Thats why market is full of mediocre shit. That and stupid console users.

I'm a PS3 owner, but I find that simultaneously releasing games for all major platforms is just a poor excuse for making money and limiting the amount of potential being realized.

So he's already defending the game? I find it hard to respect someone who already expects bad reviews or is afraid of criticism. Oh well, the game looks pretty good, but the whining is going to get old if we keep getting these types of articles.

@blueboxdoctor Well he wasn't really saying that he expects bad reviews and stuff just saying if anything is odd that it is because of current hardware.

Well I think a lot of comments here are right, I will just add that I would rather have a dev team feel like they couldn't reach their goals, but try their best to give me a great experience, rather than a dev team that stays in the past and does not want to evolve. I'm sure this game will still be great, it just won't be as BIG or as SHINY as they wanted it to be. Maybe they had a level in mind where 1000 people were walking around but only could do 100. It is not wrong to dream big. Though the article did come off as a bit snotty. I say, give them this so called power they want. See what they can do.

He's not saying it looks bad because it doesn't, it actually looks amazing. Just saying it could look better, but really, what honest, humble dev doesn't say that about their game?

The developers really hate this game, don't they? That's the 3rd time I see someone of the development team saying things that might impact negatively on the game's impression. Well, at least they're being honest.

@Total_mischief i agree, but i still wouldn't say it a few days before a release. Makes it seem like he knows something is up with the game that people aren't going to like and pose this as an excuse.

Not very bright to talk negatively about your game when it's not even out yet... Might scare off some potential customers.

Obviously consoles don't have DX11 and can't handle very many high-res textures, so maybe that's what he's talking about

Key words here guys, "Marchesi admitted that there were things he would have liked to see implemented in the XBOX 360 AND PS3 VERSIONS of Hitman: Absolution that weren't possible due to current hardware." Obviously hinting that PC users will be seeing whatever those features are, but consoles won't.

This guy is criticizing his own game, blaming it on the "limitations of current generation hardware" and it hasn't even been released yet. Not too smart.
