Hitman: Absolution dev says game limited by current gen - Report

The game's art director Roberto Marchesi says Xbox 360 and Sony PS3 "limited" the upcoming stealth action game.

Hitman: Absolution art director Roberto Marchesi has revealed that development of the upcoming stealth action title was limited by current-generation hardware.

No Caption Provided

Speaking to Trusted Reviews, Marchesi admitted that there were things he would have liked to see implemented in the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Hitman: Absolution that weren't possible due to current hardware, and that the game "does start to show the limitations of the current technology."

However, Marchesi added that working with current-generation hardware provides developers with a welcome challenge.

"The first games that will come out for the next generation of consoles will probably be just like an up-scaled version of everything," he said. "All the textures will be ramped up twice, the resolution, everything…that’s really just a brute-force approach to making great-looking games, and, in a way, it's much more of a challenge doing it with this current generation."

Hitman: Absolution is scheduled for a global release on November 20, 2012, on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

The only reason that they're limited is only because of marketing and $$$$. They could have easily developed the game for PC first and bring the best out of it, then work around the PC version to optimize it for Xbox and PS. It's exactly what the developers of The Witcher 2 did, and The Witcher looks jaw dropping due to the fact that they put their all into something they were so passionate about. This simultaneous multi-platform release is what's limiting. The tech is already here, always has been here.

@gwokage Jaw Dropping, really? Matter of opinion I guess. I have the Xbox 360 version of Witcher 2 and looks no better then Dragon Age 2 to my eyes, same type of boring linear level design.

Now the Skyrim Xbox 360 version as it is today looks really good to my eyes on my TV. I believe that was developed on a CPU as well as the Witcher 2 was but it looks way better to me as far as levels, world, and creature animations, etc, etc. Not a judgement of either game just Skyrim looks really good, better example for your point, to me at least.

That all said it sounds like to me this guy is trying to explain why his game sucks to lower fans expectations, makes me nervous about buying the game now.

@MinerAvatar @gwokage You only think Skyrim for 360 looks good because you haven't seen how amazing the PC version can look.

@MinerAvatar @gwokage Um no offence but i dont think you interpreted what gwokage was saying. He said the PC VERSION looked jaw dropping not the console version. Apparently the console version is only like the pc version running on medium settings and trust me i have Witcher 2 on pc and ran it on full and it is easily one of the best looking games ever made. I remember the first chapter when you get to the forest area and i was simply amazed at how awesome it looked. Anyway its a matter of opinion but i thought skyrim looked exactly like oblivion which was a lauch title for the 360 so after 6 years it should bloody well better look improved and i dont think it looked much better at all.

@MinerAvatar @ryan0991 Well i have seen both cause well i have played both and i just thought Skyrim was dissapointing graphically. Now i can't comment on the witcher 2 on console but because Witcher 2 was focused on pc first it looked a crap load better than the console version. Skyrim on the other hand i thought didnt look a whole lot better on pc compared to console cause again like what has been discussed on these forums, developers are just making it for console then doing a crappy port to pc. Anyway again it is a matter of opinion.

@Hector_01 @ryan0991 Maybe but the console version of Skyrim (as it is today with updates) looks great even when compared to its CPU counterpart, not so with the Witcher 2. If you think Skyrim looks like ES4 Oblivion you need glasses, a new TV, or you need to update your console version of ES5 Skyrim if you have a copy. It really is a big improvement graphicly from day one in Nov 2011 to how it looks and runs now on the Xbox 360. We are talking about PC to console ports aren't we? It looks much closer to its CPU counterpart than the Withcer 2 does on the Xbox 360.

@HipHopBeats 100% Truth. I wonder if they know it's not up to par, and so they keep spouting nonsense as if it passes as insurance that they knew it wasn't going to be good and that it wasn't their fault. Ridiculous.

I really think they're just saying this because they want a new next-gen console (besides the WiiU). Just look at the Frostbite Engine for Battlefield.

They know they're gonna get new consoles, most of the big studios are probably allready working on games for them. We know it's possible to deliver great games on the current gen, so there is no excuse really. I think Max Payne is a fair comparison to this game, and that turned out great on consoles.

they could have done a better job with the animations, some of them are terrible, take a look at the last of us or assassins creed 3, what a great animation both of these two games have.

"The game's art director Roberto Marchesi says Xbox 360 and Sony PS3 "limited" the upcoming stealth action game."

This sentence is about as news breaking as saying "cheese tastes like cheese". Seriously, games have been limited by consoles for a few years now, all you have to do is look at the pc version of multiplatform games. When the pc version should look a shitload better than the console version but doesnt cause its too much 'effort' (cough, greedy lazy pricks, cough) you know that games have been increasingly hampered as the months go on.

Im hugely looking foward to the next gen so high end pc's can work up sweat for once and actually use the hardware for it was meant to do.

True that, I bought my PC over a year ago, and judged from the spec rumors we've seen it's not gonna be a big leap for us with fairly high-end PC's. Maybe I'll go 560 SLI or just change the GPU, maybe go with 4 GB ram in addition to my 12 and clock my CPU from 3.4 to 4 ghz just to get with the times but most likely it's not even a necessity.

@Ultra_Taco So what else do you think it is then? Its the developers being lazy and greedy cause they can't be bothered to put alot of effort into the port to pc. Its simple as this. They make the console version then when they port it to pc they dont bother optimizing it all and then add a couple of simple graphical enhancements like physics and higher rez textures. Cause the pc is so powerful they can be lazy with it cause they know the pc should be able to run it without optimization hence why sometimes when you play a bad pc port it doesnt seem to run hugely faster. Anyway all the winging in the world wont change this but i find it a little frustrating.

@charlesdao How many times do people have to be told is not just graphics. More power means better ai, larger worlds, more things on the screen. Creativity is limited by your imagination saying I want too add all these things, but I can't because I have a ram cap.

Seems obvious. Current gen consoles have been limiting games for at least a couple of years. Even the 360 can just barely handle Skyrim, which is much more enjoyable on a PC, despite being dumbed down. Microsoft has been milking it since they make money off games not hardware. I've already switched to PC, and could care less about next gen consoles. I'm running nextgen++ already.

@SingletreeAve Same old story really, I'd love to see what could be done with some big budget titles if they weren't limited by consoles, with all the resources they have, maybe Arma3 will give us a glimpse of that. I'm almost entirely a PC gamer but the problem is that most of the games on PC are really still being held back, they just look nicer than their console versions but they could look a lot better and have so much more interaction, physics, gameplay possibilities with so many extra inputs, etc. I know everyone says graphics aren't the most important thing, and they aren't, but I miss the old days when a new game or a sequel came out and I'd be like wow look at the new gameplay ideas AND be wow'd by the awesome graphics, realism, size of the environment, whatever.

@hystavito @SingletreeAve Hugely agree with you hystavito. Its getting more and more evident about how much pc games are getting held back. I'll even say this, which many may not agree with, but this is how the future is looking. Since the technology is getting so good, in the past when graphics were pretty limited, of course gameplay was the obvious stand out thing about what makes a game good. But lets be honest with ourselves, the way graphics in games are going, they are getting that good that they are enhancing the gameplay and are more and more important. I LOVE atmospheric games and to me the graphics is very important. Just my 2 cents on the matter.

@kidnatural Right now, it's excuses about being limited. BS. A real display of quality and integrity is what you're able to do with the cards you've been dealt, not blaming inadequacy on the state of technology as it stands. Before, it was a comment from them that most players of Hitman: Absolution wouldn't finish the game, blaming the people's lack of attentive effort, which was an incredibly stupid thing to say. If your game is good, people will stick with it. Simple as that. Nothing but excuses falling out of their mouths as false insurance in the event that the game fails. They make me sick.

@Hey_Jay It's the truth, he's the art director and he's talking about his area of expertise. Perhaps the visual vision they had in mind wasn't obtainable with today's hardware, in the scope they desired - that's normal. Do you not think id envisioned creating a game more visually spectacular than the original Doom at its conception? They were limited by the hardware, but the game was still a breakthrough, fun game for its time. I don't understand how you believe they didn't work to the best of their ability with the cards they've been dealt. Of course they did, and that's what they all do.

As for not finishing the game, I rarely ever finish my games. I just don't have the time and I ultimately bounce from game to game in spare time, which is perhaps an hour a week. Many people that I know don't actually finish their games, yet they purchase them. It's just a statement based on the data at hand. It isn't an attempt to be a "scumbag", man.

If the game fails, it fails, regardless of the claim. I personally doubt the game's fail or success dependency is solely based on it's graphical fidelity. I would try to not take these comments so negatively, they honestly aren't that bad. They're just open.

Not a good sign that they are making excuses before the game even comes out. Reminds me of what Bethesda said about the PS3 version of Skyrim which was a mess of a game.

Please don't screw up Hitman. 47 deserves better.

@the_hunger They were utilizing the full power of the 360 at launch, same with the PS3. From there they found ways to compensate for the shortcoming to make something as shiny as possible with the same level of technology - shortcuts and condensing, simply put.

It's the same reason why I can have a nice gaming rig that can run Oblivion on max settings at 400 or so FPS without V-sync enabled, but I can install a few mods that aren't resource friendly and slug my machine down to around 30 FPS and below.

The said, think about it, you can only produce so much on a Super Nintendo, a game on that console will never perform at the level of a AAA PS2 title. So what he's saying is honest, the more power they have, the more they can do. The more the CPU can process at a time, the more information can be loaded directly into memory, and so on. He's just stating the honest truth, but that doesn't even hint at meaning that his game is poor or you'll be let down. All the great developers experience this issue, and have been. Yet you've still had great experiences gaming, I'm sure.

I understand your point. However, this developer now has a pattern of downplaying this game. Check out this posting (http://au.gamespot.com/news/most-wont-finish-hitman-absolution-says-director-6384588) where they said that they were sad that only about 20% of people would finish HItman: Absolution. They even said that people would get bored with it prior to completing it.

I just don't think that this approach of lowering expectations is a good way to market a game. It gives me an uneasy feeling about the game's quality, length, technical soundness, etc.

Anyhow, since I'm a big fan of the Hitman series, I'll definitely be looking for the reviews and will buy the game if the player feedback is solid. Still, Square Enix has an odd way of stirring up pre-release interest in the game.

It's never a good sign when a a developer of a game that is a week from release is publicly preemptively making excuses.

I think this is going to be a good game and I have a preorder in for it, but these are a potential red flag sort of comment for me.

@nocoolnamejim They'd all make this sort of comment if their vision is large enough. I mean come on, do you if the vision for Super Mario World was that of Super Mario Galaxy, they wouldn't claim the same thing? It doesn't mean Super Mario World was a poor game, but it couldn't meet the vision, it did what it could with the technology of the time.

Same issue here, it's just an honest remark. Not really any kind of "flag" against the product itself.

@abnergoinbig This article certainly wouldn't infer otherwise, if perhaps, that was what you were implying by "I'm hoping the games still good."

You can wager your bottom dollar that most developers say it, it was likely said when they were creating Hitman: Blood Money as well. That was still a fun game. Most developers just don't come right out and say it on the record.
