Hitman: Absolution dev says game limited by current gen - Report

The game's art director Roberto Marchesi says Xbox 360 and Sony PS3 "limited" the upcoming stealth action game.

Hitman: Absolution art director Roberto Marchesi has revealed that development of the upcoming stealth action title was limited by current-generation hardware.

No Caption Provided

Speaking to Trusted Reviews, Marchesi admitted that there were things he would have liked to see implemented in the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Hitman: Absolution that weren't possible due to current hardware, and that the game "does start to show the limitations of the current technology."

However, Marchesi added that working with current-generation hardware provides developers with a welcome challenge.

"The first games that will come out for the next generation of consoles will probably be just like an up-scaled version of everything," he said. "All the textures will be ramped up twice, the resolution, everything…that’s really just a brute-force approach to making great-looking games, and, in a way, it's much more of a challenge doing it with this current generation."

Hitman: Absolution is scheduled for a global release on November 20, 2012, on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

That's just an excuse, a lot of great games are still being released, better looking and bigger in scope than Hitman:Absoulution. IO probably starting to ease people into the new game which is 5 times more linear than previous games after they promised that it is no less open world that Blood Money, and that's their excuse.

@Volgin @ExplosivePants You can to a degree, you just check your history. Atleast my console doesn't get virus, and is 1/10 the price.

by "hardware limitations" he's talking about mechanic limitations. not models and textures

and the "brute force" to making next gen games is just to up the fidelity instead of using new power to expand the scope of gameplay.

-

having a street filled with a crowd of people requires considerable power, having to find a specific person in a crowd is a gp mechanic

Let's face it, all AAA console game devs have been saying this for years. The fact is that people still buy these AAA titles regardless of their limitations. Why? Because people flock like sheep to the popular games that they know their friends will also buy. Also brainwashing advertisement. I'm referring to games like cod and halo and don't tell me you paid $60 every sequel for the story. Watch a movie for $15(or netflix). Story isn't a video game; gameplay is. Look up the definition of 'video game'. It says nothing about story. Besides, doesn't halo have novels you can buy for book price? I digress.

@genjuroT "Story isn't a video game; gameplay is."

exactly. i find it strange how some people, even professional reviewers, put so heavy emphasis on story.

if the gameplay sucks, it doesn't matter how great the story is. then again, great game doesn't even need to have a story.

@groowagon @genjuroT That comes down to personal preference. My 13 year old doesn't care about story in a game so he likes mulitplayer FPS and minecraft etc.. I prefer a story so I only play single player portions of FPS games and RPGs are my favorite game type. There is something for everybody to like these days.

@Serpentes420 @groowagon To be clear, story is not needed to make a game nor does it make a game. A rocket car can be a rocket or a car, but you don't need the rocket for it to be a car. The adjective 'role playing' is affixed to the word game. This makes it a game that you role play, but you don't need a story of role playing for a game to be a video game, ever. I'm going by principle, not by what can make a game experience better by giving a personal reason to get to level 2; if they didn't have one already.

@groowagon @genjuroT Trust me games need story sometimes. What happened in 1983? The market only ever recovered because of the storyline approuch with the NES.

that's the reason i didn't like Mass Effect myself. too much focus on story, and the gameplay felt much like a narrow mission-based approach. not enough freeroaming.

did like KOTOR, though.

@Volgin @margimargi17 @groowagon @steve4123456789 I do believe you can take out the story element in those and still have good playable games. Story is kind of like music in video games, it adds flavor. Another example could be monkey's island, there could be no story or plot and the game still would of been outstanding because of the problem solving. I didn't really like dragon age or mass effect. I think older games like baldur's gate and Megatraveler had more content and gameplay than those. Seemed like all graphics in those.

@margimargi17 @groowagon @steve4123456789 Do most people even know the story of warcraft?guild wars?runes of magic? If you're referring to single player rpgs then let me doctrine this; Have you ever played an rpg you put down for a long time and forgot the whole story, but played through anyway? Have you played skyrim and cared what the story ever was? I played over 60 hours and never even got to those dragon elders that teach you shouts. Still never have.

no they don't. game i enjoy most at the moment; BF3 (online). what's the story? as far as i know, there ain't one. it's pure gameplay, when it comes to online games. they are a perfect example.

good story won't hurt, it adds, in singleplayers, but i still think games are ultimately not about story.

Okay, let's say we accept that excuse. Now, as a PC gamer, should I expect the game to implement those "things he would have liked to see implemented in the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Hitman: Absolution"? My PC has not those limitations so if the game doesn't make use of my computer capabilities, is it consoles' fault or the fact that the developer was lazy and didn't care?

@Anigmar ^ the same thing that I was thinking. My guess is that they will just offer more excuses as to why the PC version has the same limitations, instead of just admitting that they are lazy.

@highlanderjimd you PC fanatics never seem to grasp the economic side of making a product and making it accessible to people

Of all the PCs IN THE WORLD, a "next gen" 2012 PC is only small fraction.

.

not only that but standardized hardware makes production more efficient

.

good game design doesn't need "unlimited" power (as if PC has that)

@Dragdar A 3-4 years old PC beats both consoles, so it's not for elitists. They should just make each version as good as the platform allows to. Standarization is supposed to bring order, not mediocrity.

@Dragdar @highlanderjimd

that's the problem. most publishers are not willing to risk their money, requiring devs to make AAA titles multiplatform.

result: console-limited PC games. atleast RTSs remain unaffected.

then there's Dice that made BF3 with a PC-first approach. that's how it's supposed to be done. everybody wins.

The best game I've played in the past two years was The Binding of Isaac. Being creative with the tools you have is what makes an amazing game. I could honestly give a shit about this game either way, but comments like that are an easier way of saying we're lazy.

do more? the processing power is what it is, and can only do so much. it's up to the devs creativity how they use that processing power.

higher polygon count, higher resolution textures and heavier physics modeling etc. require more processing power FOR A FACT.

@genjuroT @groowagon Fine since you seem to know everything show me any game that is out or is going to be out in the next month where the developers push it to the point where it has problems due to the console limitations not to shit programing. Go ahead since you know everything!

@marius068 @groowagon A dual toaster fits 2 slices of bread. You can't fit 12 pieces of bread in it. It's how it's built. A 360 is not a ferrari, it's a cheap clunker that can't go past 20. This is the point of getting new hardware; so you can achieve more, Marius.

"i am limeted by the current gen of hardware"

Personally i think that is the biggest bunch of bullshit i have ever heard, and will continue to hear untill the day i die.

You are only limited by hardware if you let yourself be. I know how it sounds but go with me for a moment here.

You let yourself be limeted, by how far youre aiming, you can make great games, that look great, even if you tone down your ambitions about the game a little.

Developers will allways cry out for better hardware, not matter what, it never gets good enough, so i would say whining about limitations is bullshit, since they will somehow allways be there.

So, you want technology to stop improving? Maybe i'm not understanding what you mean, but it sounds like you are saying game devs should stop being ambitious and continue to sail on their wooden boats. Wouldn't you want a game that looks like metal gear zeroes and the playability of fallout?

@genjuroT You misunderstand me

Of cause i want devs to be ambitious, and i dotn want hardware improvements to stop.

But what i want is for developers to see limits as a challenge, instead og actual limits, and i want them to stop bitching about thier limitations, because they wont disappear faster fo that reason.

Also i want devs to stop being so focused about graphics, because it is usually those limits they whine about, and i am really sick and tired about it, indie developers are usually not even near the graphics of tripple A games, but some still get huge sales in thier games anyway, because they focus on solid gameplay features, not on big cinima graphics, most indie devs also know which features to cut away if it is neccesary, without bitching.

My actual point is i woud love to see the tripple A industr embrace some of the indie ideas of game development, focusing more on new ideas, and original gameplay elements, instead only trying to compete with Hollywood, with story and realistic graphics.

That is what i meant, sorry for not making that clear.
