How Sony Won Call of Duty DLC Exclusivity Away From Microsoft

Sony's existing partnership with Activision for Destiny helped.

For years now, all Call of Duty DLC has launched first on Xbox platforms. But that's changing this fall with Call of Duty: Black Ops III thanks to Activision electing to partner with Sony instead of Microsoft.

It's a big change for one of the biggest franchises in gaming. To dive deeper into the subject, we spoke with Adam Boyes, the PlayStation VP of Publisher & Developer Relations.

As you might expect, Boyes shied away from discussions specifics about the business terms of the deal, but he did offer some general insight into how the partnership came to be and what it means.

"Well, I think the first thing was we've had a great relationship with Activision around Destiny," Boyes said. "And I'm a huge fan of that."

Sony's partnership with Activision for Destiny has been a deep one, with PlayStation fans getting all manner of Destiny content before Xbox players. Sony has even said that it is treating Destiny like a first-party game in some ways.

Boyes went on to say that Activision invited Boyes and his team on a trip to see Black Ops III in person. It didn't take long for Sony to be convinced that this was a game worth getting involved with.

"We fell in love instantly," Boyes said about Black Ops III, going on to describe the game as "transformative" for its various new features.

"As soon as I started playing it, I said, 'This feels incredible! You can wallride!' It's just so smooth; it's almost like poetic. And so obviously, we just continued talking with our partners at Activision and worked something out. And now we've got I think a great benefit to all the gamers."

Not only will all Black Ops III DLC launch first on PlayStation platforms, but the game's multiplayer beta will also premiere on PlayStation before coming to Xbox and PC.

Sony's exclusivity deals with Destiny and now Call of Duty may not be the last. Earlier this year, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House said these kinds of third-party exclusivity arrangements are central to Sony's business strategy going forward.

@alaannn: I would rather have Sony investing in current gen games than on some old gen games.

I bought a PS4 for the new games. Not to play old last gen games.

@alaannn: The PS4 already play old games through the PlayStation Now service. You cannot play all old games on X1. Microsoft officially revealed that only some games are supported on BC. Both on PS4 and X1, if tou dont have the game, you have to pay for it.

@alaannn: Enjoy your time playing some old games. PS4 doesn't need that in order o keep destroying the x1 all around the world. You are a minority. Not the norm.

@TristanPR77: Maybe not you, but you can't speak for the many who does want it. With everything falling around Sony, they need the PS 4 to be successful. MS not so much as the Xbox One is not tied to their bottom line.

@lonewolf1044:

The PS4 is already the #1 console on the market all aroundd the world. They already have a BC solution with Playstation Now. Historically, BC is not a must have feature and if you believe that being able to play just some old games (not all are supported) on the x1 will make then suddenly dethrone the PS4 then you are delusional. Even at a higher price, the PS4 sells better than the X1.

I wonder how much Sony pisses away on this crap, does it really make a difference, I don't think people are buying PS4 for COD DLC first

You buy PS4 for Uncharted 4

You buy X1 for Halo 5, Gears 4 and Forza 6

Bakakun, hmm. Sounds perfect for whom prefers things American.

This did not need an article whatsoever. I'll sum it up for you. More people have PS4s than X1s. Activision goes where the money is. More people on PS4? Okay drop it there first. You do not need to be a a scientific math equation specialist to figure that one out. In other news, GS troll baits coming in at a steady stream.

I could care less about COD as I haven't played it since MW2 as it got stale fast... however I see a lot of comments about MS didn't get it due to it wasn't worth the money etc... when when you look at it it has nothing to do with that. MS wouldn't have dropped this for nothing... it was all due to install base. Last year 360 for the longest time had a larger install base than Sony until the later part of the console life cycle once the PS3 was priced within reason for the causal gamer.

This Gen the PS4 has the bigger install base which equals higher attach rate... thats really all it is... sure Sony gave them a little something something but in all honesty its in the companies best interest to go with the bigger install base.

COD is a dying franchise it sells less every year microsoft knew it was time to move on.It showed at E3 with all the exclusives and better deals with 3rd party games.Advance Warfare was the first COD game i had bought since 2007 and it was my last.Same boring crap glad microsoft didn't waste anymore money on it

It all comes down to money of course. Sony paid a small fortune no doubt. I find it odd that either company would fight over this game. I realize it's a great selling franchise but it's beyond stale. Personally I haven't played one since Modern Warfare 2. There are better games to occupy my time and the online community are mostly a-holes.

I see we're all still doing this "LOL my choice of electronic entertainment has more marketing tactics to rope in suckers like myself with more money than sense than your's!" thing.

Doesn't fake exclusivity deals and big companies throwing sacks of money at each other over who gets the broken, unfinished product first make you feel all warm and special inside?

@bdrtfm: Yeah, but it can only go one of two ways:

A) If it shifts PS4 units then the Sony fanboys will climb on their high horse and start waving spreadsheets around with sales figures on them as if having more people they don't know, nor will ever play with on the same plastic picture brick as them is somehow beneficial to them.

B) If it doesn't shift PS4 units then Microsoft fanboys will climb on their high horse and shout "lol not even cod kiddies will buy ps4 lol poop console!"

Whoever wins, humanity and the power of rational thought lose.

@Apathy4Marmite: The only units this is going to sell are the Pros who have no choice but to switch to PS4 as, that is where the events are switching to. And they are pissed about it. They've spent years honing their skills on Xbox controllers and now they have to relearn it again for the DS. Not to mention they all went out and bought X1's specifically for COD and that money is now wasted. I don't care one way or the other. I stopped playing the games after BO2.

To me this looks like a better move from Microsoft than Sony. Cod is, and has been, in decline for YEARS. I have not bought any cod dlc for last two games (the point when there was too much) so the $50m that Microsoft paid for early dlc did nothing to make money from me. That $50m invested in new IP that I will buy, will offer better return for Microsoft.

If you consider yourself superior by playing Halo 5 over COD, you need a reality check.

Both are milked to death franchises who need to die for the betterment of gaming.By buying the same generic games time and time again, you're just telling the developers to give you the same crap with slightly prettier graphics and no innovation.

As bad as Ghosts was this new one looks even worse, it's like they are literally just throwing every single thing they can think of in the game.

Wall running? Check.
Telekinetic super powers? Check!
Cyber bees? CHECK!

Call of Duty is in it's last desperate throes and the sales figures reflect that. Ghosts was a critical and financial flop and Advanced Warfare beared the burden of its predecessor. I don't see this game doing anything unique enough to bring the franchise back. I can see Activision 1) killing the franchise soon or 2) including what is normally reserved for DLC in the actual game in order to get an initial sales bump.

The games are simply not making back the money Activision is putting into them anymore.

@spiderx3000: I got my information from the same place you did apparently. 19 million lifetime units for a COD game is not great. By comparison Black Ops 2 has sold 24 million lifetime. With the budgets for COD games getting larger and larger every year the number of units sold has to maintain in oder for it to remain profitable. And all sources point to Advanced Warfare selling even less that Ghosts.

Activison has a history of running franchises into the ground with release overload then abandoning them when they stop being financially successful. Just look at Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk.

They will do the same with COD and then 5-10 years later they will resurrect it under the guise of "Hey, remember when these cool games came out? Well, we're bringin' em back!"

I couldn't care less about it, seriously when will these CoD creators actually even listen to what fans want?

There was an out cry for the game to return to WW2 and it was obvious a lot of people were bashing on Advance Warfare but what do they do instead... Stick to the same mould of the boring twitch shooter, run, run, run double jump, strafe jumping and super sliding crap!

Their is such a thing known as pacing and CoD has completely lost that, they've replaced a once semi-decent game with a terrible over the top experience, what makes me laugh even more is how they say this is the potential future... In no absolute given way would jumping up 6-10 ft in the air be known as a tactical advantage.

@Keitha313: The reason this CoD is in the future is because this game was in development long before people started begging for a return to WW2, and by then it was too late to change their whole game.
