Microsoft on Xbox One 1080p drama -- "It's all a game of trade-offs"

"Resolution alone is not the final determination" about whether a game looks good or not, studio manager Mike Ybarra says.

Microsoft has yet again responded to the ongoing Xbox One 1080p/60fps debate, with studio manager Mike Ybarra saying "resolution alone" does not determine if a game looks good or not.

"I think the point that gets lost a lot is that it's all a game of trade-offs," Ybarra told MyXboxLive. "Resolution alone is not the final determination regarding if a game looks great or not. It's one of many different levers and it's up to the game teams to decide what is best for their unique game experience."

Ybarra's comments came in response to a question regarding Ryse: Son of Rome, which runs in 900p and is still considered one of the most visually impressive games for the Xbox One.

The other "levers" that developer Crytek employed to make the game look so impressive, Ybarra said, were things like various screen effects and scripted/dynamic instances. These elements, combined with the game's 900p resolution, are what makes the game look so good, he said.

Microsoft product planning director Albert Penello said about the 1080p/60fps drama in January that, "these little things get way overblown." Meanwhile, Microsoft corporate vice president Phil Harrison said just this week that the Xbox One's eSRAM is "clearly" not too small to output games at 1080p, using examples like Forza Motorsport 5 and Kinect Sports Rivals as examples.

It was also revealed this week that Respawn Entertainment's much-anticipated multiplayer shooter Titanfall will not run in 1080p.

Also in the interview, Ybarra said Ryse: Son of Rome review scores were "lower than we wanted."

"That's always hard on any game team that puts a lot of time and effort into a game," he said. Still, though the game's Metacritic score was a 60, Ybarra said user-review scores on Amazon are better, showing that people are enjoying the game.

"While there were certainly things we wished we could have gotten in the game and we understand the key criticism, we are proud of Ryse and think it is a fun experience for our audience," he said.

Ryse: Son of Rome was developed by Crytek and published by Microsoft Studios. It's unclear if Crytek is going to work on a sequel, though the developer is signed up through Microsoft's new independent development program ID@Xbox.

GameSpot and Metacritic are both owned by CBS Interactive.

[CORRECTION] An earlier version of this story quoted Ybarra as saying Ryse sales were below what Microsoft expected, but really he meant Ryse review scores were below what Microsoft expected. GamesSpot regrets the error.

It's not solely about resolution though, is it? When multiplatform games both look and run better on competing systems it just makes the One's higher price tag rather hard to justify.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I dont see anything troublesome!

The PS3 costed much more than the X360 and had mostly slightly inferior version of multiplattform games.
Soyn fans still stuck with the PS3,isnt it just fair for MS gamers to stick with the X1?

<< LINK REMOVED >> That's an entirely fair argument. A lot of developers claimed that the PS3 is a hard platform to develop games for, but I honestly can't think of any significant performance differences such as those between certain XB1 and PS4 games in games that were developed for both the 360 and PS3. Case in point: the resolution differences in CoD: Ghosts and Battlefield 4 and the halved framerate in Tomb Raider Definitive Edition.

This article embodies developer sentiment towards the 'controlling' Microsoft Corporation and the 'soft-core' Xbox One console. The Xbox One is a multi-media device for the PEOPLE and not gamers. Game developers find the PS4 easier to make games on and probably find Sony a friendlier company to do business with. Everyone is sick and tired of being told by Microsoft how to develop and market their games. Where is Halo 5??? I won't even consider buying the XBONE until Halo 5 arrives. I'm sure it'll be good, but M$ has a lot to learn about it's consumer base (yes, we are individuals each with our own wants and needs) and they have to stop being so Communist about trying to wrangle everyone into their multi-media machine corral. Marxists! Everyone doesn't want the same thing. Gamers want powerful great looking games, not stupid Hollywood movies and TV crap that we can already get anywhere. You are soooo stupid M$, and no you don't control me which is why I bought my PS4 this morning.

I think MS is trying to cater to the casual market now, but casual gamers don't spend 500 bucks on new consoles, only hardcore gamers do lol. I'm reserving my Xmas 2015 Halo 5 bundle for 399 now...

Honestly, the average gamer isn't going to care. The only people who care about this stuff are hardcore gamers like here on Gamespot, which is a small minority. Once Halo 2 drops, everyone is going to buy an Xbox One. Probably one of the greatest multiplayer games ever.

@JDWolfie The average gamer is buying a ps4 2 to 1 over the One if this site is correct and that says something. The average gamer does not want to spend $100 more for the Xbox One and don't care that much about the Kinect, which is why MS are scrambling to reduce the price already in reports. I LOVE Halo but MS are shooting themselves in the foot with The One thus far.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I doubt Microsoft will do anything rash until after Titanfall has launched. People can poke fun at the resolution number all they wish but early buzz suggests it WILL be a system-seller.

Still I do agree with you on the Kinect. I don't fault MS for pushing a motion control agenda--the only way to gain support for such a peripheral is to get a high install base. But they will eventually have to choose between taking a loss on the Kinect or offering a Kinect-less system to get the price down. Maybe put a microphone in the base console to support voice commands and remove the camera.

I think because it sold so well last gen MS automatically assumed it would be a plus and not negative to add in into their console, but people like options lol.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> In retrospect, the Kinect was a great peripheral to introduce in the middle of the 360s life cycle. Console prices had fallen to family-friendly levels and there were years of catalog titles which made the system accessible to all ages.

But like you said elsewhere, most families aren't dropping $500 on a gaming system (plus $60 for a second controller, $120 for a couple of games, etc.)

Personally I sort of like the idea of the motion controlled games. I've used Kinect fitness. I have two kids and I'll probably get Kinect Sports so we can burn some energy on cold winter nights. My wife and daughter like dance games. The voice commands work very well for me in many cases.

If I buy a console once every 8 years, I don't mind spending $100 on a peripheral that will get some use. But it is a hard sell for people who have absolutely no interest in that feature.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>Another thing, is how the Kinect will factor into Titanfall's gameplay. If it makes it a much better experience, then that may justify the Kinect. I think a Kinect-less One is a matter of when and not if. If Titanfall flops(and it doesn't do cod-like numbers) then i'd look for a Kinectless one in the summer. Yes exclusives can make a big difference because a lower than 1080p Titanfall is still a big game Sony wishes they had to promote now.

If developers have an easier time with one console's config over the other, then that console will always get better versions of the games. Alot of last gen's games like Skyrim ran far better on a 360 imo because it was easier to develop for than the ps3. The ps4's unifed ram is a lot less of a pain than the One's ddr3 + esram setup. So unless MS start cozing up to and cooing the dev's we will always see superior versions of the games on the PS4.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Agree. And despite the PS3 being the more difficult last-gen platform, console sales ended up neck-and-neck with 360. Last gen, nobody worried about resolutions and frame rates. Not really sure why it's become such a battleground issue this time around.

What we're seeing now are the early-adopter "fanboys"...on both sides...lobbing insults to help make themselves feel more secure about their console choice. BOTH systems have their pros and cons. Higher resolution is the be-all, end-all to some people...and quite irrelevant to others.

This is the start of 10 years of PS4 / XB1 price breaks, bundle packs, policy changes, exclusive titles and so on. And eventually, most people who call themselves "gamers" will end up owning both systems.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>Yeah I think gaming last gen became so big in sales, your average gamer became more informed about system's graphical abilities more. Oddly enough, the best selling systems of all time were graphically inferior to their rivals(ps2 and the Wii). Early adopters always are more informed because they are willing to pay the premium to get new tech out of the gate and will parse differences. The trouble here is, MS cannot concede so much ground in sales this early to Sony because investors ALREADY want to get rid of its gaming division.

Yes the whole lead up and fallout to the One's reveal was a disaster last year and would have been handled a whole lot better with any other marketing team yikes.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> The Xbox brand isn't going away. And if Microsoft sold or spun-off that division, it could be the best thing that ever happened. Most of Microsoft's division have very healthy profit margins. There's no question Xbox is being squeezed to deliver its fair share. With different ownership or as a separate company, expectations would be much different.

As for conceding ground, again it's worth looking back at PS3 / 360. MS has a year's head start and benefitted from those ridiculously high PS3 launch prices. Still PS3 recovered well.

There are many different options available to MS in the long run.

So Forza 5 and a freaking KINECT game were referenced as being 1080p? Forza 5 is something to be proud of yes, but you know a company is sweating when they reference a Kinect game as running in 1080p lol. I've seen Ryse and it looks amazing, but if similar games that look that good consistently start coming out for the PS4 at 1080p and 60fps then MS's X Box One is doomed with gamers. If Titanfall is not at least 900p and 60fps(and future Halo titles) then the One is basically a second best console to the PS4. I'm loving this though because it just means MS will support my dear old 360 much longer:)

But on a side note, neither console's launch titles all ran at 1080p and 60fps(bf4 was 900p on the ps4 and 720p on the one) so that is pretty freaking pathetic for "next gen" machines. With mandatory installations, limited hard drive space,pc architecture, and nothing like great steam sales for these consoles it may be time to join that master race....

Amazon vs. Metacritic.

Amazon is in the business of selling merchandise, Metacritic is not. Amazon's scaling system is designed make products appear better than they may really be. Almost everything on Amazon is 4 stars, and virtually nothing ever drops below three stars.

The major difference between Metacritic and Amazon's rating systems.

Metacritic has a 0 to 100 scale.

Amazon has a 1 to 5 star scale.

Amazon's star scale equates 20-100 on Metacritic's 0-100 scale. The extra 20% (for the worst products) inflates the Amazon scores around 20%. Most people would be inclined to buy a 4 star product on Amazon, where as a 75% percent rating on Metacritc would give them pause. Both values are identical.

Yes, because all teams say: "Hey, we can choose between 720p and 1080p for our game. Which one would be better? 720p, of course."

To make a game in native 1080p it cost more money. If higher native resolutions cost the same as lower native resolutions, most games would be made for the next generation TVs at around 2160p (if I remember correctly). Crytek, a MS studio, made a financial decision to make Ryse in 720p and are now trying to spin why it's better than 1080p. If one of MS's own game studios can't showcase a launch exclusion in 1080p on their new system (which is supposedly capable of 1080p 60 fps), then you can't tell me that Crytek would prefer to design their games at 1080p.

Yes they do, as Albert Penello stated: Forza 5 and KINECT Sports Rivals are 1080p native. Let me reveal a little known fact to ya about the development of sports/racing titles: they're REALLY EASY to make! Ridge Racer 7, a PS3 launch title (pretty much), was 1080p/60fps. So was NBA The Inside:07. SPORTS...and RACERS. Microsoft's biggest asset is MARKETING. Making it LOOK a certain way, when it really isn't a THAT WAY...lol
