Microsoft on Xbox One 1080p drama -- "It's all a game of trade-offs"

"Resolution alone is not the final determination" about whether a game looks good or not, studio manager Mike Ybarra says.

Microsoft has yet again responded to the ongoing Xbox One 1080p/60fps debate, with studio manager Mike Ybarra saying "resolution alone" does not determine if a game looks good or not.

"I think the point that gets lost a lot is that it's all a game of trade-offs," Ybarra told MyXboxLive. "Resolution alone is not the final determination regarding if a game looks great or not. It's one of many different levers and it's up to the game teams to decide what is best for their unique game experience."

Ybarra's comments came in response to a question regarding Ryse: Son of Rome, which runs in 900p and is still considered one of the most visually impressive games for the Xbox One.

The other "levers" that developer Crytek employed to make the game look so impressive, Ybarra said, were things like various screen effects and scripted/dynamic instances. These elements, combined with the game's 900p resolution, are what makes the game look so good, he said.

Microsoft product planning director Albert Penello said about the 1080p/60fps drama in January that, "these little things get way overblown." Meanwhile, Microsoft corporate vice president Phil Harrison said just this week that the Xbox One's eSRAM is "clearly" not too small to output games at 1080p, using examples like Forza Motorsport 5 and Kinect Sports Rivals as examples.

It was also revealed this week that Respawn Entertainment's much-anticipated multiplayer shooter Titanfall will not run in 1080p.

Also in the interview, Ybarra said Ryse: Son of Rome review scores were "lower than we wanted."

"That's always hard on any game team that puts a lot of time and effort into a game," he said. Still, though the game's Metacritic score was a 60, Ybarra said user-review scores on Amazon are better, showing that people are enjoying the game.

"While there were certainly things we wished we could have gotten in the game and we understand the key criticism, we are proud of Ryse and think it is a fun experience for our audience," he said.

Ryse: Son of Rome was developed by Crytek and published by Microsoft Studios. It's unclear if Crytek is going to work on a sequel, though the developer is signed up through Microsoft's new independent development program ID@Xbox.

GameSpot and Metacritic are both owned by CBS Interactive.

[CORRECTION] An earlier version of this story quoted Ybarra as saying Ryse sales were below what Microsoft expected, but really he meant Ryse review scores were below what Microsoft expected. GamesSpot regrets the error.

You people do realize that the XboxOne if more than capable of both 1080p and 60FPS right? If a game is not running in that is because that is how the developer of the game made it not because of the XboxOne hardware. Gamespot is just spreading misinformation and slanted articles about the XboxOne because Sony advertises on this site, if you cant see that than have to be dim.

Too early in the next-gen race? Then, why is the PS4 already showing 1080p?

When are they gonna get their story straight...find some BS excuse and stick with it, would reduce your PR damage at the very least (I dont think we'll get the truth, but here's hoping).

First they say its overblown...then the box can do 1080 and now they say we have to trade off graphics ?, remember that the PS4 does 1080p for games that your box cant (CoD is a prime example) so your gonna need a better excuse....we do you have to sacrifice graphics when the competition doesnt seem to have that issue :P ?.
While great graphics arent vital for a great game, it always helps to have more and improved tech to sell it.

Some games do yeah but when one of your best selling games (CoD) only supports 720p on the Xbone but 1080p on the PS4 you have to wonder why that is ;). Dev's have said its due to the Xbox while M$ has tried to deflect blame, with all the BS M$ has tried to feed us im more inclined to believe the dev's. If they could do 1080p without sacrificing performance then they would have, so why on earth can the PS4 handle it while they are struggling with the Xbone.....you should think about this ;).

More damage control that only goes to show that Sony forced Microsoft's hand to get the system out in 2013 when they were expecting to have another year to work on it.

MS can try to spin it any way they want to. The fact that after 8 years of the 360 they did not release a console (which has a life expectancy of 8+ years) that is powerful enough to handle 1080/60 is completely shameful. 1080/60 is mainstream today and there is no excuse for the XBOne not being able to handle it.

Really? Hey about this....how about I spend $150 (audio adapter, controller battery) less on a console (PS4) where I don't have to "trade-off" anything for a solid gaming experience...?

If the XBO could achieve 1080p/60fps on Ryse...then he wouldn't be having to make a statement about "trade-off". It's typical PR management (a MSFT studio afterall).

How about providing a "unique gaming experience" on ALL levels?

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I know you're trolling but I'm bored so here goes. 1080p/60 is a nice sounding benchmark. However in reality most people wouldn't be able to discern the exact resolution/frame rate of a game without someone detailing specs. Ryse is proof of that. The first game I got on the XB1 was Forza (1080p/60) and I thought it was the greatest thing I've seen on a console. Picked up Ryse and I'm floored on how beautiful if looks. It does NOT have the highest native resolutions and everything that makes the most hardcore gamer's heart flutter, but it looks damn good.

Also there is no inferior console. I haven't bought the PS4 yet because there is no game out for it that is a must buy for me. For me it's not about cross platform performance but exclusives. I love the Forza series and the multimedia aspects of the console, so jumping on the XB1 was an easy choice for me. Anyway, the point that I believe xen0f0rm is getting at is that 1080p/60 is not the end all be all for a graphically impressive game. Also none of us are programming games for either system, but one thing is certain. Neither have infinite resources so there are tradeoffs happening on PS4 as well, it's just logic.

It wouldn't have to be "a game of trade-offs" if they had just designed a somewhat more powerful console.

Though he's right that resolution isn't everything- despite what the PC gamer, who refuses to play The Last of Us because it's only 720p, might tell you.

Well when it comes to cross-platforming XBONE's lack of 1080p will be a glaring issue since in these types of games, judging by the previous generation, both the PS4's and XBONE's graphics will be almost the same.

"various screen effects and scripted/dynamic instances" great a game that plays itself and looks pretty, RYSE might look great but it sacrifices a lot to do it, including limit your gameplay horribly with invisible walls and areas that played like a bad tech demo where you pressed one button, watched some action in real time, pressed another to set off another sequence.

The game was made to look good and make the X1 look powerful and obviously that's where all the effort went.

On my PC screen though, things are different. I can definitely notice if I lower the resolution - that's mainly because I have a giant monitor that I'm looking at from a very close distance.

It's not the typical console experience...

I am willing to bet all my money on the fact that people can't tell whether they're watching something in 1080p or 720p.

Just play an HD video on a TV screen and ask people whether they think it's 1080p or 720p.

Probably they'll get it wrong half the time, right the other half.

Now if you put two screens right next to each other and play them at the same time, it becomes possible to distinguish. But even, you'd have to look very closely - it's not obvious.

@g0ldenpr0pet @godfather830 You do realize that DVD isn't 720p, right?

Also, Blu-ray is 720p. (it's only 1080p in very rare cases)

DVDs have a resolution of 640 * 480. That's only one third of the number of pixels in a 720p video. So yes, of course I can tell the difference there.

I bet you can't tell the difference between Gosts on XBO and PS4, but then again neither of us has any proof to back their claims :p

Like when I play Witcher 2 now on my PC after doing an in depth comparison of the two I can sort of tell where the edges are crisper on the game but until I did that comparison I wouldn't have been able to.

Same with when I went into a store to try a PS4 today, I though the demos looked awesome but it wasn't because the resolution was super uber. In fact it wasn't until I was about to leave that I remembered all this crap about the resolutions.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> On the TV in my living room it is set up annoyingly where it will choose to play our Satellite TV box which is in HD, through SCART by default and I for the life of me can't work out how to make it not do that.

And if I walk into the living room and someone is watching TV through the SCART I can tell immediately. Yet my dad says he can't see a difference. If I start watching a program and accidentally click the standard definition version of that channel I can also tell.

But interestingly on games I can't tell that much of a difference. Most likely because I'm focusing more on what to do and where I need to go rather than looking at the edges of the leaves on that plant. Or the screen is moving around so much you can't focus on one small spot.

Like have you ever seen a movie in iMax? I swear I couldn't actually believe my eyes when I saw it. I thought cinema was the ultimate experience but iMax seriously blew me away. It was the absolute definition of perfection. On such a large screen that is saying something.

The moment MS says it's not about resolution, the moment resolution becomes irrelevant. The second they say it's not about power, the second power becomes unimportant. The minute they tell you their console is the best ever, the minute that becomes the truth and nothing but.

Remember kids: you don't have to work very hard to become the best at anything; just open your mouth and say you are, and you'll magically become the best.

What is annoying is that this actually needs to be explained about six hundred times and people still don't seem to get it.

If I play a game on my laptop at 720p it looks awesome, that is because it is a smaller screen. Yet it is still a lower resolution than 1080p, ghasp!

1080p allows the image to be sharper overall nothing more nothing less. If you gave Final Fantasy VII 1080p it would still look like Final Fantasy VII i.e. pretty crappy.

I don't know why resolution is suddenly such a major thing for everyone. Especially on consoles. If you want 1080 + resolutions why not build a PC? If it is so important why do you touch console at all?

Yes, there is a difference between 1080p and 720... But the difference isn't as stark as, lets say, the difference between SD and HD... Unless you're literally playing the PS4 and Xbox One in a relay session then I doubt it would bug many people.. The frame-rate issue is only an issue for specific games (like sports or FPS)
