Microsoft on Xbox One 1080p drama -- "It's all a game of trade-offs"

"Resolution alone is not the final determination" about whether a game looks good or not, studio manager Mike Ybarra says.

Microsoft has yet again responded to the ongoing Xbox One 1080p/60fps debate, with studio manager Mike Ybarra saying "resolution alone" does not determine if a game looks good or not.

"I think the point that gets lost a lot is that it's all a game of trade-offs," Ybarra told MyXboxLive. "Resolution alone is not the final determination regarding if a game looks great or not. It's one of many different levers and it's up to the game teams to decide what is best for their unique game experience."

Ybarra's comments came in response to a question regarding Ryse: Son of Rome, which runs in 900p and is still considered one of the most visually impressive games for the Xbox One.

The other "levers" that developer Crytek employed to make the game look so impressive, Ybarra said, were things like various screen effects and scripted/dynamic instances. These elements, combined with the game's 900p resolution, are what makes the game look so good, he said.

Microsoft product planning director Albert Penello said about the 1080p/60fps drama in January that, "these little things get way overblown." Meanwhile, Microsoft corporate vice president Phil Harrison said just this week that the Xbox One's eSRAM is "clearly" not too small to output games at 1080p, using examples like Forza Motorsport 5 and Kinect Sports Rivals as examples.

It was also revealed this week that Respawn Entertainment's much-anticipated multiplayer shooter Titanfall will not run in 1080p.

Also in the interview, Ybarra said Ryse: Son of Rome review scores were "lower than we wanted."

"That's always hard on any game team that puts a lot of time and effort into a game," he said. Still, though the game's Metacritic score was a 60, Ybarra said user-review scores on Amazon are better, showing that people are enjoying the game.

"While there were certainly things we wished we could have gotten in the game and we understand the key criticism, we are proud of Ryse and think it is a fun experience for our audience," he said.

Ryse: Son of Rome was developed by Crytek and published by Microsoft Studios. It's unclear if Crytek is going to work on a sequel, though the developer is signed up through Microsoft's new independent development program ID@Xbox.

GameSpot and Metacritic are both owned by CBS Interactive.

[CORRECTION] An earlier version of this story quoted Ybarra as saying Ryse sales were below what Microsoft expected, but really he meant Ryse review scores were below what Microsoft expected. GamesSpot regrets the error.

I'll say this, do games still look good on the Xbox One? Yes, they do, but that is not what people were expecting from next gen... There were so many numbers thrown around during the build up that I think 1080p 60fps was expected from this next generation of consoles, and we didn't get it, so we are a little upset, as anyone would be when they are let down or told they can't have something they expected to get. But I don't think that 1080p is necessary for a good gaming experience

To guarantee 1080p 60fps takes some significant hardware, especially with the amount of detail gamers are expecting. I have a pretty powerful gaming PC, and I have to drop details on the newest games to get steady 60fps at that resolution. So if I can't do it with a $300 processor and a $400 gpu, guess what... expecting a console to do it at a significantly lower price is unrealistic :-/

<< LINK REMOVED >> optimization plays a big role here tho, pc usually gets ports unoptimized games, and it doesnt matter even if you have 4 titans , you may just be stuck below 40s. the difference between consoles and pc was supposed to be efficiency , and optimization.

It's not like consoles are meant to run like a PC or have PC issues. I think they forget that not to mention 1080 P was don at 60 frames years ago and is old tech I mean more than 10 years old kind of tech

<< LINK REMOVED >> PC gamers pay more for more, consoles can't even come close to PC's detail and physics, there is a lot more to it than just resolution and frame rate. Nothing was doing 1080p @ 60fps 10 years ago, not with the kind of detail running today. That is why what this guy in the article is saying is kind of correct, you can have all the resolution and frame rate you want, but the details are what make games atmospheric and engrossing... you can have a lower resolution with better details and have a better experience than a higher resolution with less details. It's a constant trade off no matter what hardware you are running.

This is kind of a silly statement. When your competition doesn't need to make these trade-offs nearly as often, you can really state it as gospel.

Personally, if the Xbox One came with a much larger GPU and more RAM in substitution for Kinect, I would have gladly paid the extra hundred dollars. However, it is kind of difficult to justify purchasing hardware that is less powerful than my 5-year-old PC that does all the same thing and then some.

Sales numbers speak volumes, especially in North America, about how much 1080p really means to consumers.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Its not the fact that there really isnt enough memory, its the fact that for some retarded reason decided to use this ESRAM, Its slower, and its more difficult to work with. I honestly dont know what they were thinking. Its really going to hurt them in the future, when you have Some great looking games running smoothly on PS4 and PC, all the while the xbox one is struggling to keep up due to its slower memory.

what 'trade off' is he talking about. How does a good GPU affect game play? is there some kind of bandwidth we are not aware of where the higher gpu power the less features are in a game?

Ryse was a good game that could've been great if it had a longer story and more variety in the combat. I hope Crytek makes Ryse II and puts in the stuff they left out in Ryse.

This "my pc can run 1080p easy and next gen console MUST run it too" is getting tiresome...

Rawrimscary, I earn $150 per hours and I still bought PS4 and Xbox One! See? I am better than you in every way!

Consoles are not about high end graphics and I don't understand why people can not grasp this? And why people think that who ever buys a console can not afford PC is beyond me. I paid 12k for my 50" TV, do you think I can't afford your shitty PC?

I run all my games at 1080p on my pc that has a $150 AMD 5850 graphics card from 2010. I play current games at max or medium high settings, only game I currently play on medium high is everquest II. There should be no reason why a brand new xbox is having games developed that run under this resolution. Plain and simple.

Ryse is an awesome game, Dead Rising 3 is another awesome game, Forza 5 is an awesome game, Titanfall is yet another awesome game, if you think these games are shit and haven't even played them, it's quite possible you're an idiot or don't like having fun.

@Blazen702 okay first, he started out by saying ryse is awesome. thats like saying knack is game of the year. second, dead rising 3 is hardly worthy of being a placeholder for xbox one, im pretty sure all X1 owners will admit to that. forza 5 is the only game thats launched on xbox one that can hold a candle to... anything 'next gen'. and titanfall....ffs, seriously? anyone who can't see how copy/paste with low textures and gameplay mechanics of an unreal engine game from early 2000's is blind as @#$!. textures are lackluster , environments are DEAD, static, lifeless images. physics... wait what? NONE. 6 v 6 with bots? wtf is this. at least CoD you can shoot through a billboard with any weapon. a mech couldn't shoot through a damn wall. once the hype fades for this game, and it will, because its already begun, spend some time on twitch when you want to have your own opinion...and then we'll be right back here, on this forum, square 1 talking about how these games are steaming piles of shite.

my thing is, if it doesnt run at 1080p, its partially a big deal - because generally they bump textures or shadows, right? but in MS's case the sacrifices we're made either to improve fps or maintain a steady 60 fps. so, if this is the case, it had better be better looking than its competitor running at said resolution, because if u can tell the difference, and its minimal or worse...then you have a problem, and your statements defending that problem are moot *points at MS*

Agreed. Admit it Microsoft. Your system can't handle the resolution. People are quick to state well look at FIFA and Forza. They run 1080p. Yes but they aren't graphically demanding games. Your car is limited to a track and your player to a field. Even NBA, player is limited to a court. There is a difference between the system can't and choose not to. I dare them to release a patch to enable 60fps on tomb raider definitive edition for the Xbox One. Even digital foundry's breakdown revealed the game to drop below 30fps. And before you blame the developers, think about Microsoft for a second. They wanted an all in one entertainment system. Not a strictly gaming console. If they had made it easier to develop for, they wouldn't be having these issues. Microsoft, high definition is damn near 10 year old tech. When i had my PS3 i remember your trolls spouting off how Sony could barely achieve 720p. So when next gen came out i expected you to give us that same capability at the least.

No it can hit 1080p with simple graphical games such as your sports games. But put down a highly detailed environment with complex textures and shaders, no... not even close. Prime example is tomb raider. While it has been proven on PS4 it can reach 60fps while at 1080p its average frame rate was around 54 or 55. While on Xbox One it is said to be capped at 30 while its average is around 28 or 29 with dips lower than that. And i think with BF4, being rushed as hell and faults across all platforms doesn't really hold any weight in this argument. Even then it's runs at 720p upscaled to 1080 with Microsoft's shitty over sharp upscaler. As whatever stated above, it better look and run better than its competitor abs it doesn't

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> because something simply looks good, doesn't mean its more graphically demanding than another game - forza/dying light are poor examples, one being primarily CPU bound, and the other GPU. other things go into effect like lighting, and polygon count as well as shaders/tessellation. just because the car moves fast doesnt make it more graphically demanding :P in certain situations developers will add blur to reduce polygon count/graphic clarity because the human eye can't see/keep up with textures. people should stop using forza as an example tho, its been stated numerous times that it consumes 100% of the xbox's power... and its still a jagged mess. They probably should've sacrificed that 1080p to bump its aliasing.

I thought he lost any credibility when he started citing amazon reviewer scores. Why not just go with gamestop or best buy review scores? If its something like an appliance then okay, I am curious what they have to say, but something like games its a lot less credible.

1080p/60fps is certainly noticeable, but of course, does not determine the complete picture of 'graphics'. Efficient use of texture quality and after effects can make some darn good looking games within the confines of the system.

Still, the existence of the PS4 and the quantity of cross platform games doesn't make the Xbox One being give or take 30% less powerful not worth mentioning, even though it's still a powerful system that is more than capable of generating some great next gen graphics.

@kovaras1984 @Necrotron everyone keeps blabbing on about the XB1 will be better when it gets new SDK tools… do you think the PS4 SDK tools just stand still and wait for other systems to catch up, nope, there in development aswell… both systems will get better and better… make your choice and pay the money…

and to Microsoft if hitting 1080p @ 60fps isnt a big deal, why do you keep (are you still) bringing it up? just stop bitching about it and make the best of what you have done…

they are right, resolution alone does not determine how great a game looks. but when you have lower resolution and less shaders and less compute units and no gddr5 then it becomes a very different story. notice how he did not talk about that at all, microsoft yet again hiding the disadvantages of their console while sony admitted the disadvantages of the ps3 and fixed them this gen by taking away cell architecture (which was the only disadvantage of the ps3) and making it an x86 build to make it the easiest system to develop for.

ye, maybe ryse did look good at 900p (and better than their 1080p titles). That is because less resolution = more room in vram for shaders and lighting and so on. On ps4 it would look even better and be 1080p at 60 fps.

example. on a mid-range budget pc put battlefield 4 on ultra graphics and chances are you will have to turn the resolution down in order to get a stable framerate. set them to medium and you would probably squeeze 1080p at 30 fps in. set them lower and u might get 60fps at 1080p.
