Microsoft partners with Time Warner for new live TV deal

Microsoft announces "landmark" deal with Time Warner to bring US subscribers 300 live TV channels this summer.

Today, Microsoft announced a "landmark" deal with Time Warner Cable that will bring 300 of the cable company's live TV channels to the Xbox 360 later this summer.

No Caption Provided

Users must have an Xbox Live Gold membership and a subscription to Time Warner Cable to watch live television through their Xbox 360s. Live streaming is available only to those in the United States.

Supported channels include AMC, BBC World News, Bravo, Cartoon Network, CNN, Comedy Central, Food Network, HGTV, and more. Users will be able to control the programming using their voice through the Kinect, Microsoft said.

This deal is similar to the existing offer for Verizon FiOS subscribers, where users can watch many of the same channels live through their Xbox 360s with Kinect compatibility.

Live TV streaming through Microsoft's next-generation Xbox One won't require a separate application, as it currently does on the Xbox 360. The console will plug directly into a user's cable box and feed live TV through the system with an HDMI cable.

Still not sure why this is news. I still have to pay TWC if I want those channels and I still have to pay for a cable box right? What does this do for me? Now if I could down load an app and stream TWC in HD, use my Xbox HD as a DVR and then am able to get rid of my cable box, THAT would be news!

eh.... I would think this was cool if they somehow made it part of the gold membership but I don't really care in this case..... I don't like TV enough to pay for it I'll stick with Netflix.... on top of this you still need a cable box? not much of a point aside from gimmicky control

Seems like a good way for MS to gather data for targeted advertising, and maybe a way for them to offer a subsidized Xbox One through content providers like Time Warner, but I can't see any real benefit to this for consumers. It's just more intrusive advertising.

"The console will plug directly into a user's cable box and feed live TV through the system with an HDMI cable." I'm a little confused. I use my HDMI cable to go from my Xbox to my TV already. How do I connect the Xbox to the cable box and get it back to my TV? My cable box only has one HDMI connection and so does my Xbox. So even if I connect the cable box to my Xbox.. how do I get the signal to my TV? maybe I am missing something?

@Csdabest89 @sqitso Umm.. Okay brainiac. So the manual is here http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-360/manuals-specs/manual-specs and just to make sure I double checked the "manual" because I was trying to understand, how a single HDMI port on the Xbox can be used to connect my cable box which also has a single HDMI port to my TV. If the Xbox has a single HDMI port and I connect it to the cable box; how the f*ck do I connect the HDMI port to the TV, when it is connected to something else? Would you mind telling me what the f*ck your dumbass answer has to do with answering my question?

@meluvulongtime8 At first I thought to myself, "OH! One less box, now you don't need a cable box and an Xbox in your living room." And then I read that the cable box needs to be connected to the Xbox. So...yeah.

Actually sounds kind of cool, but I can no longer support Microsoft. They're not for the people and don't have our best interests in mind. Their only goal is to suck every dollar from us they can by force.

@ajay1708 Really? By force? I wasn't aware that the XBox One wasn't an optional purchase any more. I guess that explains why everybody's upset.

Bottom line - Choice is ALWAYS a good thing. Anyone suggesting otherwise should pack up and move to China.

@RighteousWoman Choice is not always a good thing. Ultra capitalist societies bombard people with excessive choices. You should actually try visiting a country that doesn't operate in that fashion and compare for yourself.

I am glad that they cut the eye. I don't want it. I also do not like the Kinect. I don't feel I should pay $100 more to help subsidize a mandatory item that I do not even want.

Already pay for electricity, Sky TV, broadband internet and TV license, that's not always cheap, im not paying anything more extra to watch it on the 360 or the One, it will be the PS4 for me.

@DeanoFantasy if you keep up with everything this costs no extra, furthermore may make the x1 cheaper if you purchase it through your cable provider, this will be an extra fun feature, think about voice controlling your tv on those really lazy days, i'll end up buying both systems b/c of exclusive games for each, but the x1 will be all around more fun..

Bandwidth caps are a end user problem. The consumer will be left to deal with the ISP's that are threatened by this deal. Please get the word out that most ISP's don't feel subscribers should use more than an arbitrary cap. I'm not an advocate of the deal, I'm an advocate of more bandwidth.
