Microsoft partners with Time Warner for new live TV deal

Microsoft announces "landmark" deal with Time Warner to bring US subscribers 300 live TV channels this summer.

Today, Microsoft announced a "landmark" deal with Time Warner Cable that will bring 300 of the cable company's live TV channels to the Xbox 360 later this summer.

No Caption Provided

Users must have an Xbox Live Gold membership and a subscription to Time Warner Cable to watch live television through their Xbox 360s. Live streaming is available only to those in the United States.

Supported channels include AMC, BBC World News, Bravo, Cartoon Network, CNN, Comedy Central, Food Network, HGTV, and more. Users will be able to control the programming using their voice through the Kinect, Microsoft said.

This deal is similar to the existing offer for Verizon FiOS subscribers, where users can watch many of the same channels live through their Xbox 360s with Kinect compatibility.

Live TV streaming through Microsoft's next-generation Xbox One won't require a separate application, as it currently does on the Xbox 360. The console will plug directly into a user's cable box and feed live TV through the system with an HDMI cable.

So you have to already be a subscriber TO the cable company and you have to have another box...... so it's a really expensive extra cable box..... The thing is... I can hit the "AV" button to switch between my games and TV RIGHT NOW ON MY CURRENT SYSTEM. (sigh)

My cable remote has more buttons than an Xbox One. Not to mention I wouldn't want my Xbox One on reducing it's lifespan to watch TV, that could easily be done by another device called a cable box.

I'm not sure what their deal is here, but these gimmicks aren't winning me over. Sorry Microsoft.

@VeeArSick The thing is: it doesn't even replace a cable box. What's the point of Live streaming through my Xbox anyway?

@northArrow @VeeArSick seamless integration. the fact that you can switch to tv and games in an instant without having to press on the remote. having everything right there, your gaming, your skype, your tv all there, you don't have to use multiple devices to use all of those functions.

That's their goal and have always been their goal, they want to be the ultimate system, the one thing you always use no matter what. People always say, I have this and that that does it, but MS mission is to have you do everything without having you to use this, and that. I can agree, it is not a favorite of mine, but I certainly can't be mad at them for wanting to attack this. They want to be the "Wal-Mart" of entertainment. My personal feelings about Wal-Mart aside, I can't be mad at them taking the opportunity they did to grow the business that they grew.

@Ravenlore_basic @dman123_1 @northArrow @VeeArSick But that's like saying there isn't anything new any of the 2 consoles do, so why upgrade anyway? Their features obviously have an audience, otherwise they wouldn't do it. I dunno all the intricacies of it all, so I can't X it out as something being silly. There were plenty of things I thought were silly until I tried it, like a tablet for example.

@dman123_1 @northArrow @VeeArSick But that't the main problem to me anyway. It does nothing new or different.

It only does the same ability that a person with a remote can do now. loading a game hit the INPUT button on the remote and there is the cable, the cell phone rings... look its Apple face time someone is calling I can pause the game, or play at the same time.

There is no real need for Xbox One or streaming over the Xbox 360. Its only for hardcore people that want some gimmick for those who want to have some new tech to show off to friends.

I think you are misusing the word "greedy". They are "greedy" because they made some highly questionable business decisions? Perhaps Sony is more greedy because they made better decisions and may end up making more money than Microsoft...?

All companies exist to make money. If you consider that "greed"... then what are you? Do you want money? If you don't: more power to ya, but the rest of us NEED money to live. All money is is a medium of exchange given in exchange for work or goods..... beats the hell out of working directly for food and having to barter with it.....

@CaptWaffle @ibonedyourmom making a product that people want is not greedy, selling something over the top that is not needed at the consumers expense is greedy. There is a difference.

@CaptWaffle @ibonedyourmom Don't act like you don't know wtf I'm talking about. I'm talking about nickel and diming the **** out of your customers. For example, Time Warner charges you $10 a month for your DVR box, another $12/month for DVR "service", another additional charge for each box, another additional charge for each remote, another additional $10/month charge for a modem, another additional $5/month if your modem is wireless, another additional charge for giving you a bill, etc, etc. There's a line between being reasonable and just being straight up greedy c*nts.

YAwwwwnnn... Why is microsoft so obsessed with this cable integration crap... statistics show that cable tv subs and viewership is on a steep decline. And this is not an amazing feature, because you HAVE TO BE A CABLE SUBSCRIBER ALREADY! now if microsoft came up with some sort of Xbox Live package where you pay something like $100 for the year and you get access to NEtflix, Hulu, HBO GO, and all of those type apps. Then maybe just maybe that would be worth wild. But paying $60 for xbox live, $9 for netflix, $8 for hulu, $13 for hbogo, and some obnoxious cable bill is just not all that attractive in my opinion. But I guess fanboys don't really care what crap they toss at you as long as they can have their shiny new xbox. pathetic

I love how there's not really a ton to complain about post-policy reversal so people are saying stupid crap like "I don't want awesome TV options, I want to play video games."

Well guess what. You still can.

I'll stick with my PC for another.. forever, but I can see how the Xbone is becoming a compelling piece of hardware. And no, I don't believe the Kinect is spying on you. Go back to your basements, Illuminati conspiracy crackpots.

People are underestimating the One, Microsoft is delivering a 100% entertainment system. Nag all you want about policy changes, Kinect 2, or how the PS4 is a powerhouse. The One is bringing good things to the table, plain and simple.

@Thanatos2k @Change_MyShorts

People bring ignorant comments like this. The PS4 plays games, what is it bringing new to the table, why not just hook up the ol Dreamcast or NES. Next gen graphics alone wont suffice. At least Microsoft is expanding what their box can do. You dont have to use any of these new features folks...but its there.

@Change_MyShorts @Thanatos2k Because no new games are available for the Dreamcast and NES?

Expanding what the box can do is meaningless when the expansions are useless to people. It's DETRIMENTAL when the useless expansions drives up the price.

See how idiotic Microsoft thinks people are? Pay $500 + $60 + $65 to watch TV on the cable service and internet you're already paying for? With Kinect monitoring your eyes to make sure you're watching?

I feel like the world has gone crazy.
