Microsoft partners with Time Warner for new live TV deal

Microsoft announces "landmark" deal with Time Warner to bring US subscribers 300 live TV channels this summer.

Today, Microsoft announced a "landmark" deal with Time Warner Cable that will bring 300 of the cable company's live TV channels to the Xbox 360 later this summer.

No Caption Provided

Users must have an Xbox Live Gold membership and a subscription to Time Warner Cable to watch live television through their Xbox 360s. Live streaming is available only to those in the United States.

Supported channels include AMC, BBC World News, Bravo, Cartoon Network, CNN, Comedy Central, Food Network, HGTV, and more. Users will be able to control the programming using their voice through the Kinect, Microsoft said.

This deal is similar to the existing offer for Verizon FiOS subscribers, where users can watch many of the same channels live through their Xbox 360s with Kinect compatibility.

Live TV streaming through Microsoft's next-generation Xbox One won't require a separate application, as it currently does on the Xbox 360. The console will plug directly into a user's cable box and feed live TV through the system with an HDMI cable.

Uhg. Pay for the internet, pay for Time Warner to pay for Xbox Live Gold to watch my cable?

When there's already Netflix, Hulu+, and a million free streaming websites?

Uhg.

@Kelleyb4947 @BlueRaptor7 Time warner cable subscription...is that free?

Paying $10/month for Netflix, Hulu and HBO Go gives me direct access to everything I would ever watch on TV without the bloated other channels.

Why pay over $100/month for cable when you can essentially pay for what you want and get on-demand for practically most things for $30. I'm just waiting for HBO to offer a standalone Go service (you wonder why Game of Thrones and many HBO shows are among the top pirated shows, people have stopped paying for cable and moving to netflix)

@Kelleyb4947 @YoungCardinal @BlueRaptor7

I just personally don't see the value of TV anymore.

News and weather have been replaced by the internet for me. All major newpapers publish articles on their websites for free, and have apps to check these on my phone too.

Sports and the Discovery channel are the only things I miss out on, but I can sign up to stream games for my favorite teams.

To me, the high cost of digital cable does not justify having Discovery or National Geographic. I'd rather pay a fraction of that cost to get on demand movies and TV shows on Netflix (where you can watch many complete shows without having to buy a DVD boxset ever again).

(I used GOT as an example to point out that its among the highest pirated because of the way its not accessible easily to everyone - without deluxe cable package premiums at least.)

@YoungCardinal @Kelleyb4947 @BlueRaptor7 No, but with Time Warner you can watch the news, the weather, the discover channel.. I myself hate all those Series' like Game of Thrones, to get any entertainment value out of them I'd have to buy all the seasons and watch them all at once..otherwise, episode to episode NOTHING happens it's all drama and oh so boring..

I'd rather watch the news, and see how black holes are made haha. Plus you get on demand for free with the service I pay for, over 10,000 movies for free. And I can record 2 things at a time and store 200 hours worth of anything ..now if they brought THOSE features to time warner cable, then I could see a lot of people, especially those with children that game, opting for the Xbox One. TV aside, Kinect is a great way to keep kids busy, and it's cheap.

To few xbox fans who are being to defenisve to the the poster here lemmings has thought ever across your mind? that the reason why some of gamers here aren't liking the idea that Microsoft is focusing to much ov getting tv deals for 360 and xbox one which will happen that Microsoft is ignore making more exclusive for 360 this year and early next year.

Microsoft is ignoring their fanbase who want more exclusive from them

@kyacat They are giving ALOT of exclusives, so I wouldn't be to concerned with that. But I do think they should focus more on indie games like sony

@c_teb @kyacat I'm going to have to disagree..respectfully. I think indie games are fun and all, but since DLC and microtransactions are going to keep running rampant, what's to stop Publishers from them in indie games? And, MS does have a fair amount of exclusives, but the DEVs themselves have said it's the games that will be available on both systems that will play better with the Xbox because of their parternship and $4 billion investment with Windows Azure and directx 11.2.

I already have a TW cable box, but I may not use it to feed my XB1.

Instead, I may use the XB1 pass-through for my XB360 or my PS4.

I have not decided yet.

@power-fantastic I used to have directv, I had to give it up because you get a lot more free movies with Dish Network, and you get NFL Ticket. Besides having an updated UI that isn't a decade old, clunky, and beyond slow..what else would it take to get someone with a cable provider, someone like you, to want to switch over to Time Warner? I'm just interested because for me at least, if I could spend $60/year for xbl, $20/month 8mb/s internet, and then maybe just $20 more a month and get 300 channels DVR included with something like NFL ticket..I think that'd be one helluva deal..

I'm not adverse at all to saving a buck. I have dtv for the sunday tik exclusivity. Last check it's still exclusive to dtv (and ps3 thru dtv). I don't care for the redzone. I want to be able to watch the whole game. If dtv loses the ticket then i would naturally rethink my options with them. I got the whole house genie for free after a service call area up on their end. It's tons better than their old equipment. I doubt x1 will link with dtv. If they did I could see dtv charging a fee. At this point x1 provides a service I don't need. I can see those with time Warner or comcast being enthused by this but at this point the whole all in one unit is of no benefit.

From my understanding you also have to have pay subscripton to time warner to watch 300 channel on 360.

Microsoft seems to focus more on US consumers than anywhere else from the looks of the Xbox one80.. which is kinda unfair imo seeing that other countries people pay just as much as the US gamers.. maybe even more and they don't have this feature.Idk if something similar will come later for other countries but it would be fucked up if it didn't. And I live in cali.. Anyways I don't care much for tv cause I can still watch it without a Xbox one80. Way to go Microsoft..

I can understand the need for innovation, but it seems like they are focusing on ways to stop you from pressing "IMPUT" on your remote/TV and get you in the mind state that you only need an Xbone in the living room. I don't really care about TV/media features, some may. But it is a path like this that is hindering the amount of good content for games. Games are getting shorter and shorter while requiring less brain power. I play video games with my console because that is what I bought it for. That is great you want to give people the option to watch tv shows on their console, but it's like you're not focusing on why you built the machine in the first place. Sequels and shitty remakes, carbon copies and shallow games are flooding the market and everyone acts like that shit is cool.

All of you people crying "I just want to play games" THEN JUST PLAY GAMES THEN. Get with the times. Every console can play games. Whoopdy do. A PS3 and Xbox 360 play games the same way, just different controller. Expect the same next gen. The PS4 won't "play games better" (the first person to mention theoretical TFlops is going to show their complete lack of knowledge) than the Xbox One or vice versa. Its no longer about just 'playing games'. Its about what else you can do. Extra features differentiate consoles and that is a GOOD THING. So stop whining.

I don't hear people crying about the new Smart TVs that are everywhere these days. They connect to the internet, you can control them with your smartphone, you can have side windows of live twitter feeds, etc. Speaking of smartphones, remember when everyone just wanted a phone that plugged into the wall? Now if you don't have Wifi, GPS, Bluetooth, a 5 inch HD screen and a 8+ Megapixel camera, it fucking sucks.

This is the future kids. Its called innovation. Get over it.

How much you think, say, an Xbox One would cost exacly if must of it's features would have been removed (including Kinect)? Besides gaming related obviously.

I'm not gona pay an extra 500€ for a Smart TV just to watch movies on 1080p resolution, i can do that with a Full HD wich is significantly cheaper...

Investing on useless services, more subscriptions, higher production costs, higher retail prices and for what? So you can watch tv or play without a controller? and look stupid by the way...

Innovation they call it...

@GreySif The price you pay per unit of utility you gain is the chief statistic these Actuaries use when determining what these multibillion dollar companies should produce. You can't tell me that paying for cable, internet, a phone, xbl/PS+ separate would be less expensive than bundling it all together..you just can't.

@colt_a Actually, I see no point in the smart TVs, and bought HD TV that didn't have those features. Smartphones are pointless, I don't need any of that crap I have a PC already. The truth is when I buy a product, I buy it to serve that purpose, and often times all those "extra" features cause issues with that product preventing me from using what I bought it for.

It's why I'm happy with my landline, and my cable box, that has anything I wanna watch available on demand. Comcast already requires me to rent/buy a cable box from them in order to watch HD TV, why do I need my Xbox to do it? So I don't gotta press input?

@inebriantia @colt_a Desktop's are dead as Disco man. But the whole purpose of the Xbox or Tvs or even our phones becoming "smart" is so you only need one smart device..so you're right; though the world is mobile, whether you are or not is just an after thought. You represent a very small demographic of self sustainable living. Not knocking on you at all.. some days I hibernate in my room with my mini tower and my HDTV and play games, listen to music, blog and vlog..but when I'm on the go, nothing beats a smart phone or a netbook. and if you're going to get a smartphone you might as well get an xbox now, cause you can bundle everything else you need into that one box..
